The right hand plays the melody using all 4 fingers and overlapping brackets. The left hand is more simple, playing mostly 5th and 3rd intervals. Kaplan has fond memories of studying composition with John Davison at Haverford College, where music majors received a copy of his book, Piano Music I. This has been a beloved companion through the years, always occupying a prominent place on the piano. The Introduction and Dance is by turns introspective and witty, and works well in a woodwind-quintet arrangement (even though here and there some notes are omitted—after all, a pianist has more than five fingers!—or raised or lowered by an octave). The arranger recalls Davison explaining that the Dance reflected his experience improvising for a Morris-dancing group. This is part of Kaplan's project to broaden the repertoire of music available to woodwind-quintet players by arranging both great classics and little-known gems. Several more of these arrangements have been (or will soon be) posted to YouTube and are available for purchase through SheetMusicPlus or SheetMusicDirect.Note that this quintet includes an optional piccolo part, for flautists who can double on piccolo.

The first carol was originally written as a poem by Christina Rossetti and published in 1872. It has been set to music several times, but the tune most associated with the text, Cranham, was composed in 1906 by Gustav Holst. The second carol is a French Canadian Christmas carol first written by a Jesuit missionary in 1642. This tune is also called the Huron Carol.This medley is written for 3-5 octave bell choir and goes back and forth between the two carols several times. Every time there is a key change, sometimes between related major and minor keys, and sometimes between two closely related keys. The melody is carried by the low, middle, and high ranges of the bells at some point in the piece and the accompanying voices are quite active throughout most of arrangement.In Bleak Midwinter's Moonlight is between the level 3 and level 4 range of difficulty. There are definitely passages that will require work and the multiple key changes require multiple handbell changes, but bell changes are never very abrupt and accidentals only happen in the transition passages. The most difficult part will probably be making sure the melody is always heard even when it is buried below active accompaniment. Type of Harp: Big harp version is for 33 string harps or larger, but small harp version works for 26 string harps or larger. The tune used here is variably referred to as Germany or Gardiner, after the most common arranger. The tune was actually composed by the famous German composer Beethoven but the most common arrangement of the tune was by William Gardiner in his volumes known as Sacred Melodies. The tune is also used by some schools for their alma mater song. The tune is also used for the hymn Where Cross the Crowded Ways of Life.This arrangement of the tune is for 3 to 5 octave handbell choir and utilizes handchimes extensively. It also starts with the singing bell technique. They produced a distinctive soft musical style, combining Karen's contralto vocals with Richard's harmonizing, arranging, and composition skills. During their 14-year career, the Carpenters recorded 10 albums along with many singles and several television specials. Karen possessed a powerful singing voice, and close miking brought out many nuances in her performances. Richard arranged their music to take advantage of this, though Karen had a three-octave vocal range. Richard's work with Karen was influenced by the music of Les Paul, whose overdubbing of the voice of wife and musical partner Mary Ford allowed her to be used as both the lead and harmony vocals.[6] By multi-tracking, Richard was able to use Karen and himself for the harmonies to back Karen's lead.
