The composition 4 Prague Poems of Altered Minds for a classical string quartet (two violins, viola, cello) and electronics and has been written by an award wining composer Elia Cmiral. The composition is in traditional four movements, it can be performed together with electronic pre-recorded material or as an option together with film produced and directed by Elia Cmiral. The composition expresses the feeling of hopelessness and despair by the breakdowns of values in our societies, reflects the change in the human minds in a global crisis exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. Composition has started during the COVID-19 pandemic and was completed last year (2021) premiered live with the film in Prague, Czech Republic by a prime string ensemble Epoque Quartet that also played the whole piece in the film. The visual part of the project has emotional attachment to the city of Prague, each movement brings poetic visions of the city, raising the questions - Did we really lose ourselves? Is humanity going to destroy itself with its endless and arrogant greed? Where are we heading? After three dark movements we find in the last movement a hope in human creativity, love and finding a light in the end of the dark tunnel. Movement I – Desolated City and its Living Shadows (8 min), fast and rhythmical Movement II - Tears of a Dark River (10 min), slow and emotional Movement II - Anguish and Rage (4 min), extremely fast and dissonant Movement IV - Faith in Hope (6 min), medium tempo, rather emotional Performing Options: Option 1. I started writing what would become One Sows for the Benefit of Another Age in 2013, as I was sketching ideas for what became a piano trio. I liked what I had created, but two things became evident: The piece was destined to be for orchestra, and I was not good enough as a composer to finish it. Over the next seven years, I kept returning to this piece in my spare time, adding some sections, tweaking some others, and at some point I gained the experience to finish it. But the trade-off was that I no longer had the time. At least until Spring of 2020, when the COVID-19 pandemic put most of my projects on hold, and I was able to return to--and finish--the work.The title came last. My ideas while I was writing centered around Americana (I was listening to a lot of Copland, Barber, and Ives) and infusing my history and experience in the Ozarks and on the plains. I knew I wanted to make use of the idea of illumination, of dawn. I wanted to start in the shadows and end aglow. The darkness was such a defining feature that my working title was Aegri Somnia, loosely translated from Latin as troubled dreams. As I continued working, I realized that the focus wasn't the darkness--the focus was the change.I discuss change a lot in my teaching. Students often see change as transformative change--massive, radical, sweeping change, like winning the lottery, or winning an audition. Transformative change is easy--it usually involves hoping for a situation or a Deus ex Machina, and if it happens, it benefits us immediately. Iterative change, however--small, repeated, incremental change that builds up over time--is hard. An extra half-hour of work every day, a little extra contributed to savings every month, these changes add up over time and become significant. But it requires intention and action, and it doesn't reap immediate benefits. It may not end up benefitting us at all.One Sows changes iteratively. It starts from a dark place, but is sprinkled with seeds of hope. A descending motive introduced in the violins brings us out of the darkness, albeit slowly. The idea spreads, develops, and eventually becomes part of a new idea, a new paradigm, that takes over.In searching for a title, I came across Serit ut alteri saeclo prosit, North Dakota's Latin state motto, whose English translation is the title of this work. It's a recent addition to the North Dakota statutes, but a timeless message. Our work isn't finished yet.

OF SHADOWS ON THE STARS, BY KURT M. MEHLENBACHERFOR SOLO PIANO, EARLY ADVANCED, 14 PAGESOf shadows on the stars finds its name within the famed poem Sure On This Shining Night by James Agee. The poem receives a great deal of discussion on its meaning, contemplating if the words are hopeful, mourning, rife with humility, or a statement of resignation.My take on the poem is that it is of deep hope and contemplation, declaring that the world is held in the warm embrace of summer and that life if being kind. Most strikingly, though, is the last line of shadows on the stars, forming the crux of the text. It is the moment when the words change perspective from the stars casting shadows on the earth to the earth casting its shadows on the stars.Regardless of what that may mean exactly, its elegance caught me, and its inherent imagery helped guide the formation of this piece. Unlike Lauridsen or Barber–neither of whom I am claiming to bear resemblance–this work actually has no text, and is driven more from the diction and isolated events present in the text rather than an interpretation of the poem as a whole.

Evocative piano solo for Early Intermediate (2nd, 3rd year piano).One of my favorite moments as a piano teacher was discovering Night Train by Chris Goldston in that great collection of Alfred's called Contest Winners, in this case Vol. 2. I'll never forget turning to the second page of this moody A minor piece and finding the Bb Lydian, D minor, and E Phrygian passages. That piece is magic, and most of my students would confirm that. The A minor return has a sublime little twist, which was one of the inspirations for indicating hand positions larger than just 5 steps by means of a V. And, of course the final chord is probably the first time the student has ever heard, much less played, the sound of stacked 4ths (because they're probably not yet listening to Coltrane and McCoy Tyner). The text of the melody gets further illustrated with texture painting (wind blowing) and chord clusters (sirens), culminating in the cacophony of all these sounds along with a small ensemble from the choir making shouts and shrieks. Here is a flowing instrumental trio arrangement (for FLUTE and/or VIOLIN duet with PIANO accompaniment) of a beautiful hymn from the early 1900's titled My Song by D. S. Hakes. The original lyrics were inspired by the following Bible verse: The Lord is my strength and song. Psalm 118:14. This hymn may be better known by its Spanish title Mi Redentor es Cristo (O Jesus, my Redeemer) when used with lyrics translated by Edgar L. Maxwell. The original lyrics by F. E. Belden are shown below.Both the FLUTE and the VIOLIN get to lead with the melody at times making this a fun and equally challenging piece for both instruments while adding variety for the listeners. The FLUTE plays the melody for the first verse and then the two instruments alternate for the second verse. The VIOLIN leads with the melody for the third verse. The song begins in the key of C major for the first two verses, then transitions to the key of G major during the piano interlude before the final verse.Though notated with FLUTE on part 1 and VIOLIN on part 2, the ranges are also accessible for other combinations of C instruments such as 2 VIOLINS or 2 FLUTES. Derek Hasted writes What a wonderful title - the story behind the title is explained succinctly on the Wikipedia website.This bluesy piece by The Shadows makes a really accessible guitar quartet for an intermediate ensemble, and a foot-tapping crowd-pleaser for a school recital or as an contrasting item in an adult concert. There are some x-headed notes - simply clap your hands together on the beat and I am sure the audience will join in - they used to when the Hampshire Guitar Orchestra played it - frequently failing to clap at the right time at all!Guitars 2 and 3 are the easiest lines - perfect for the less-experienced players in a mixed ability group. Guitar 4 has a fun and funky bass line. Guitar 1 goes quite high, but I have presented the notes at pitch and also in 8va notation so that your reading of the “on-the-body-notes†is clear and error-free. From the Shadow's Edge was commissioned by horn player in the US Air Force Bands, SSgt Alena Zidlicky, to honor her grandmother Beluse Urlich Zidlicky (Babi), who escaped the oppressive Nazi occupation of Czechoslovakia during WWII. For brass quintet and percussion, the horn is featured. The music of this composition begins in aural darkness, as if immersed in an inescapable shadow. The tense harmonies and contrapuntal motions of the brass are accompanied by two heartbeat motifs, in the tuba and bass drum, conjuring sentiments of fear and uncertainty. Emotions swell as the solo horn enters with contrasting triplet rhythms that struggle against the complex mixture of duple strains throughout the other parts. This dark introduction serves as a prelude to the above storyline, which transitions quickly (and trepidatiously) out of the shadow. From rehearsal letter B through the remainder of the piece, hope permeates in the brightness, once escaped from the shadow’s ominous edge. The complex nature of the thematic overlapping and polyphonic texture of the quintet as a whole provide feelings of unrest, anticipation, hope, and yes, heroism. Nothing exudes heroism more than a soaring solo horn! This composition celebrates triumph over evil, whether during life or in death, and those who press on with a brightness of hope even in the darkest shadows that life can cast, as exemplified in the life of Beluse Ulrich Zidlicky.
