The 729-foot-long iron ore carrier, loaded with 26 thousand tons of taconite pellets for the auto industry, was bound for Detroit. Earlier that day, the weather service had issued a gale warning. This was not unusual, considering that gale storms are typical during November on Lake Superior. The Fitzgerald’s Captain, Ernest McSorley, and her 29-member crew headed northeast unaware of the maelstrom they would soon encounter. At around 2 a.m., Bernie Cooper, captain of the Arthur M. Andersen, another freighter which was following a few miles behind the Fitzgerald, radioed Captain McSorley to consult with him about the worsening storm. They had both decided to take a more northerly route along the Canadian shore, which they hoped would provide some shelter from the violent gale winds and waves. The Fitzgerald’s long-range radar stopped working the following day and was needed in order to avoid Six-Fathom Shoal, a shallow area of Lake Superior that could rupture the ship’s hull. McSorley soon radioed the Anderson to report that the Fitzgerald had sustained some topside damage...a fence rail down, two vents lost or damaged, and a starboard list. A list meant that the Fitzgerald was taking on too much water and was causing it to lean to one side. The short-range radar also stopped working, and the radio direction beacon from nearby Whitefish Point vanished. This would make it impossible for the Fitzgerald to reach the lee waters of Whitefish Bay and escape the 80 mph winds churning 20 to 30-foot waves. At 7:10 p.m. that night, First Mate Morgan Clark of the Andersen radioed the Fitzgerald to see how they were doing. Captain McSorley replied, We’re holding our own. This was the last contact anyone would have with the Fitzgerald. Shortly thereafter, the Edmund Fitzgerald disappeared from the Anderson’s radar screen. All 29 of her crew were lost on November 10th, 1975. The Edmund Fitzgerald chronicles the tragic final voyage of the well-known shipwreck in 4 movements; Embarkment, The Gales, Six-Fathom Shoal (We’re holding our own.) and Entombment-Dirge. The concerto makes use of several musical quotes. The first is Spanish Ladies, an English sea chantey, which appears in both the 1st and 3rd movements. The second is the funeral march theme from the 2nd movement of Beethoven’s 3rd Symphony which is heard in the 4th movement of the concerto. The Promise of Liberty, available for either SATB or unison/2-part treble choir with optional guitar or piano accompaniment, is an adaptation of the sonnet The New Colossus by Emma Lazarus (1883). The sonnet was written to raise money for the construction of the Statue of Liberty's pedestal and has graced the entrance to the Statue of Liberty in New York Harbor since 1945. The chorus for this work is adapted from the Lazarus poem, while the verses are new text written by the composer. Duration ca. 3 minutes. The Promise of Liberty Winds blow fierce and foul storms rage. Safe shelter seems a hopeless dream. But in the dark a promise beams, a beacon to a golden age. [Chorus] Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free. Give me the wretched from your teeming shore. Ben-Amots: The Joyce Cycle (1986) James Joyce's collection of 36 love poems titled Chamber Music has been a source of inspiration to many composers. From these, Ben-Amots has set nine for medium voice and piano (later orchestrated--see below), in a style he characterizes as neo-romantic to match the deliberate archaicism of Joyce's language. The songs are meant to be sung as a complete cycle, but these complex and beautiful settings may be performed independently. Shortly after composing the cycle, Ben-Amots orchestrated it, and he now considers the orchestral version to have priority. Deftly and lightly scored (winds in pairs, no heavy brass), this version sounds strikingly Mahlerian in places. 1. O Sweetheart... The lover finds solace in love when friends him fail. 2. My love is in a light attire... He admires the sight of his love walking through an orchard. 3. My dove my beautiful one... In language reminiscent of the Song of Songs, he bids her arise. 4. Rain has fallen... They seek shelter on a rainy day. 5. Sleep Now, O Sleep Now... The lover's unquiet heart is calmed with a kiss. 6. It was out by Donnycarney... A cheerful folksong, sealed with another kiss. 7. Winds of May... By the turbulent sea, the loved one has disappeared. 8. I Hear an Army... Giving way to despair the lover dreams of an army ferociously charging up out of the depths. But... 9. From Dewy dreams... It was just a dream, after all. The introduction is presented in a rather rollicking manner where it breaks into a first presentation of the melody- the verse is more said while the chorus is more snappy. A brief transition gives way to the first flute stating the tune, supported by the clarinets with this chorus more block. A modulation takes place using motivic material from the theme with the style smoother and more contrapuntal. The coda section takes from the introduction material and gains dynamic momentum, with a snappy ending.Key of F, Bb.

Incidental music composed for piano in four parts by Philip Le Bas to accompany the Japanese folk tale (ghost story) Yuki-Onna (Snow Woman). This work developed out of a cross-cultural project initiated at Morley College, London, in early 2019, aiming to create a melodrama for piano solo and spoken voice to be performed in northern Japan later in the year by young students of the piano. It is based on the ghost-story above, which is widely known in Japan. The tale was transcribed and published by Lafcadio Hearn (Koizumi Yakumo) in 1904 as part of his book “Kwaidan: Stories and Studies of Strange Thingsâ€, a collection that has been highly influential in expressing popular Japanese culture over the past century. Synopsis of the tale of Yuki-Onna: Two wood-cutters, Mosaku and his apprentice Minokichi, encounter a terrible snow-storm and take shelter in an empty hut by a river. The storm gets worse and worse, but they both finally fall asleep. When Minokichi wakes, he sees a woman all in white bending over Mosaku breathing bright white smoke onto his face. She then approaches Minokichi. She is very beautiful, but her eyes make him afraid. After a while she says, “I intended to do the same to you as I did to the old man, but I feel pity for you because you are a pretty young man. If you ever tell anybody what you have seen, however, I will kill you too.†And she vanishes into the snow storm. It is then that Minokichi discovers Mosaku dead on the floor of the hut. Years later Minokichi meets a beautiful girl, who calls herself O-Yuki. He falls in love with her and they live together in his house, along with his mother, who fortunately takes a liking to her new “honourable daughter-in-law.†Over the years O-Yuki gives birth to ten children and the villagers all agree that she is a wonderful person. But she is somehow different from them, as she continues to look young and fresh, despite the passing years. Minokichi often thinks of telling O-Yuki about the events of years ago, and eventually, as he is gazing at her beauty one night, he can resist it no more. He begins to tell her about the snow storm and the terrifying snow-woman. To his horror O-Yuki becomes more and more angry, and she finally says: “It was me, it was me,… and I said I would kill you if you ever told anyone! But for these children asleep here, I would do so this very moment! You had better take very good care of them; for if ever they have reason to complain of you, I will treat you as you deserve!†As she screams at him her voice becomes thin, like the crying of the wind, and she melts into a bright white mist spiraling into the roof-beams. Main Titles of America was composed during shelter-in-place in July 2020. The piece was premiered in Winter of 2020 and was selected as a finalist in the 2021 National Young Composers Challenge. The composition was largely inspired by film music. In a film score, there is often a piece called Main Titles that plays during the opening scenes of the film. Typically, this piece encaptures all the major musical motifs present in the score of the movie. As the name suggests, Main Titles of America portrays the major themes of America in musical form. The three themes the piece highlights are opportunity, freedom, and love.The main musical motif appears early in the piece and is supported with eight notes and triplets from the harp and violas. The overall feel is adventurous and hopeful with energy building. The main motif is prominent throughout the piece, and almost every instrument plays the motif at some point. Each instrument represents a unique person who has the opportunity to flourish in America. The second motif represents freedom, and it is primarily played by the woodwinds. In particular, the flutes with their light, feathery sound help to express this idea. This motif is more playful and adds a touch of cheerfulness and lightness to the piece. It reflects the happiness of being free. The main motif and the second motif are intertwined just like opportunity and freedom. The third motif represents love and is prominent in the second half of the piece. The same eighth notes and triplets provide seamless energy and flow. While still maintaining a dream-like feel, this motif is meant to sound more grandiose and emotional. The sweeping themes and romantic harmonies are intended to portray the feeling of an ideal relationship. The piece ends with a triumphant brass chorale (the same motif from the beginning) followed by a tutti chord. It’s the musical representation of look how far we’ve come! The piece highlights the infamous American Dream - that anyone in America has the opportunity to pursue their dreams, find love, and create their own destiny.

It's a sentimental offering, but one intended to raise awareness of the need to support organizations that shelter and care for animals in order to find them homes where they can live long, happy and healthy lives.The musical underscore starts off dramatic but soon becomes more atmospheric to underscore the poem. The poem is timed somewhat to the music, however, each reader will offer their own interpretation and cadence to fit within the overall fabric of the music. The score is particularly suited for professional orchestras especially since it calls for two harpists and a full compliment of strings, winds, and brass, and a variety of interesting percussion. Everything about the score is intended to underscore the poem reader, so dynamics are generally soft and the score will work and sound great even with orchestras lacking some of the instrumentation.Portions of all proceeds from sales of this score will be donated to charities supporting the care of Dogs, Cats, and other animals and it is the composer's/poet's wish that live performances will make the most of the symphonic hall setting to encourage others to donate generously to organizations that promote animal well-being.

Legislators and law makers have diminishing what defines hate crimes, if hate crimes deserve additional sentencing, taking away laws that would ensure and help to protect this minority population most vulnerable to being victims. And not just in the USA, but around the world LGBTQ+ persons , are being attacked , imprisoned, and even murdered everyday . IIn the USA, Even where as victims like myself are seriously harmed , and in the hospital , requiring surgery, permanently maimed , broken bones, etc. most criminal perpetrators get minimal sentencing , even probation . And as in my case, these criminals had have multiple other serious convictions of physical harm to others and even serious gun charges. Please make your voice heard, help protect yourself, or your family, friends, and loved ones by contacting law makers local and federal to let them know this is not ok, and laws need to be changed to protect every person .
