Considered a sea chanty, the song was passed on orally by singers on clipper ships. The variations in lyrics that have been collected demonstrate how various singers over the decades have altered the song (consciously or unconsciously). ♫ This arrangement is based on lyrics that were collected prior to 1860 and published in Sea Songs and Shanties by W. B. Whall (1910). There are evidently 2 rivers mentioned in this song, the Shenandoah and the Missouri. The song tells a love story between an impetuous trader and a Shenandoah Valley Native American princess. As the trader heads for the Missouri River, he looks back longingly to the home of the princess. ♫ I have used the Dorian Mode to suggest Native American elements in the story line. The YouTube video features photos of both the Shenandoah River and the Missouri River. ♫ The white man loved the Indian maiden, Away you rolling river. With notions his canoe was laden. One of America's most recognizable and beautiful folk tunes, Shenandoah had by the mid-ninteenth century achieved wide popularity on both land and sea.American folklorist Alan Lomax suggested that Shenandoah was a sea-shanty and that the composers likely were French-Canadian voyageurs traveling down the Missouri River — men who sought their fortunes as trappers and traders, loners who became friendly with and sometimes married Native American women. American sailors heading down the Mississippi River picked up the song and made it a capstan shanty — a work song — that they sang while hauling in the anchor.Various versions of the song, and various lyrics to the tune, exist. Some believe that the song refers to the Shenandoah river. Others suggest that it is of Native American origin and tells the tale of Sally, the daughter of an Algonquin Indian chief, Shenandoah, who is courted for seven years by a white Missouri river trader. Other versions of the song have linked it to riverboat men, cavalry men, mountain men, and Civil War soldiers. Here’s a new arrangement of that ever-popular American folksong Shenandoah.  The original song probably has its origins among the French Canadians who traded with Native Americans around the Great Lakes during the sixteenth century. These traders exchanged weapons and tools for animal furs, especially beaver pelts. Paddling their canoes along the Mississippi and Missouri Rivers the traders were well-known for their singing. It is common to find the left hand playing a tenth with the perfect fifth above the bass in between (i.e. C-G-E). In general, the fast movements are very technically demanding, and while lyricism dominates the first two movements, the large chords definitely add a couple layers of difficulty! I still hope you enjoy them!I wrote my set of variations as a way to explore a variety of ways by which I could accompany the folk tune, Shenandoah. With the first two variations, I chose to stick to the decidedly lyrical disposition of the original tune, while the last three variations are recast in a more boisterous and upbeat light. In all variations, I did my best to write in a way that evoked the feeling of Americana (I tried not to limit myself to stereotypical depictions of Shenandoah, and yet I wanted to ensure I maintained a respect for the source material). Thus, one variation, I attempted to transplant the melody into the vast openness of the unexplored West (variation three). In another, I tried to utilize harmonies that were reminiscent of Jazz (variation two). The final variation's intended affect is one of general optimism that characterizes America's trajectory from infancy to today.
