In the fall of 2013 my friend and colleague, Paulius Grigonis who is the organist at St Joseph church here in Vilnius was preparing to play a recital at Vilnius Cathedral around Christmas time. He approached me asking for advice about the pieces he could be playing.I offered him to compose a set of 6 variations on the famous Christmas tune Adeste fideles and he agreed too much hesitation (too bad).I started working on the composition but got stuck at the end of the 5th variation. I used major and minor chords only. My goal was to create something colorful and modern and yet understandable to the listener.Because of these simple chords the harmonies are very clear and transparent. What makes it sound modern though is that I avoid traditional chordal progressions of the perfect fourth and perfect fifth. This would imply tonic-dominant, dominant-tonic, tonic-subdominant, subdominant-tonic relationship.But I didn't want this. I wanted to surprise my audience and my friend Paulius. So I chose all kinds of progressions - minor and major seconds, minor and major thirds, even a tritone to keep it fresh.However, the result was too difficult to play for Paulius on a short notice and I got side-tracked with other projects. Although the idea of completing the variations never left me.So last weekend I sat down and added the last variation with a CODA.I hope you'll enjoy this piece which is dedicated to Paulius.8 pages, PDF score. The chief artisan of the Tabernacle, Bezalel was filled with the Holy Spirit in the Sinai desert. The indwelling of the Holy Spirit was not permanent until Pentecost, but the filling is seen throughout the pages of Scripture. ♫The filling of the Holy Spirit ought not be connected with one specific activity (such as the gift of tongues) but any activity that the Holy Spirit can use to accomplish bringing glory to God. Micah was filled with the Spirit of God when he prophesied against the leadership of Samaria and Jerusalem. Peter was filled with the Holy Spirit as he spoke to the pilgrims at Pentecost. Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit as she greeted Mary, and of course Bezalel as he received knowledge and guidance to design and create the Tabernacle. ♫ I wrote this song in Haiti while meditating in Scripture and thinking about ministry. This song is short because I realized that it was better suited as a warmup for ministry than a congregational worship song. Whether on a concert stage or a church platform, it is so easy to get caught up during a performance and get sidetracked, concentrating on the the praise, recognition, acceptance from the audience that singing, playing and instrument, or preaching can bring. "Bicycle Race" is a single by the British rock band Queen. It was released on their 1978 album Jazz and written by Queen's lead singer Freddie Mercury. It was released as a double A-side single together with the song "Fat Bottomed Girls". The song is notable for its video featuring a bicycle race with nude women at Wimbledon Stadium, which was controversial at the time, with the video being edited or even banned in several countries.
The song was written by Freddie Mercury and was inspired by watching the 18th stage of the 1978 Tour de France passing Montreux, where the band were recording Jazz in the Mountain Studios. It starts with a chorus unaccompanied by instruments. The chorus is followed by two verses connected with a bridge, both followed by a chorus. Around the middle of the song is a solo played with numerous bicycle bells. The song has an unusual chord progression with numerous modulations, a change of metre in the bridge, and multitracked vocal and guitar harmonies.
