JS Bach, 15 Sinfonias (3 part Inventions) Originally for keyboard alone.This transcription separates the 3 voices, so that the bottom two can be played on a keyboard instrument while a treble instrument plays the top. The original has been transcribed for a piano to accompany a treble instrument like flute, violin, oboe, etc. The piano score has the second voice on treble and the third voice on the bass clef of the grand staff. The flute part is in a smaller size staff above the piano grand staff. A companion book for the flute, or other treble instrument, is also available. In addition, an audio cd has been made where the flute is in the right channel, and the piano accompaniment in the left channel. This cd is useful as a practice tool to let either player practice with a recording.. You can download the 16 tracks at https://app.box.com/s/wg2vyo7yg4imchnb7zaihk0e3fs1nqaw The user can use panning to either hear both parts, or only the other player’s part as he practices. All are in the original key. Violins and clarinets can play Sinfonia 15 in the original key of B minor, but the flute range doesn’t go low enough. So Sinfonia 15 has an additional version transposed to E minor so that a flute can play the low notes of the melody line without jumping octaves. Saxophones and other instruments can play the flute part without transposing if the accompanist has an electronic keyboard. to transpose the piano part. Published by Fabrizio Brezzo (A0.896391). Pasquale Anfossi (5 April 1727 – February 1797) was an Italian opera composer. Born in Taggia, Liguria, he studied with Niccolò Piccinni and Antonio Sacchini, and worked mainly in London, Venice and Rome.He wrote more than 80 operas, both opera seria and opera buffa, although he concentrated on church music, especially oratorios, during his last years. Anfossi died in Rome in 1797.As an operatic composer, Anfossi remained forgotten for a long time, despite his great popularity with his contemporaries, because his works were overshadowed by those of Salieri, Rossini and Mozart. Nevertheless, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe staged Anfossi's farsetta La maga Circe (Circe, the Sorceress) in his role as the theatre director of Weimar. He adapted the libretto with Christian August Vulpius and also made plans for a continuation, which never came to bear.Only in the last 20 years has Anfossi's work been appreciated anew, through diverse productions such as Giuseppe riconosciuto. His work was featured at the 2005 Salzburg Summer Festival.Fabrizio Brezzo, this arranger, lives in Taggia, the town where Anfossi was born.In the second half of this symphony, you can hear the theme that Mozart used, 9 years later, for his Confutatis maledictis of the requiem mass.

American composer, organist and harpsichordist, Daniel Pinkham (1923-2006) studied the Organ and music theory at Phillips Academy in Andover before studying at Harvard. He was famously moved by a concert in Andover given by the Trapp family singers in 1939, soon after they had escaped Austria. He quoted, 'Here, suddenly, I was hearing clarity, simplicity. It shaped my whole outlook.' Pinkham's career saw him teach at the Boston Conservatory and the New England Conservatory of Music, as well as being organist of King's Chapel in Boston for 42 years. His compositions varied from symphonies to art songs, although predominantly his music was religious in nature, frequently incorporating a choir and Organ. Christmas Cantata represents Pinkham's influence of 20th century trends, often embracing plainchant, joining Stravinsky and Hindemith's revival of early music. Full of rhythmic life and complex harmonies, this classic work is sure to be a standout contribution to any holiday concert.

Dramma per Musica, is an opera in three acts based on a libretto by Pietro Metastasio composed by Vivaldi and premiered at the Teatro Sant’Angelo on February 17, 1734, during the carnival. There is an earlier version based on the same libretto but written by Antonio Caldara in 1733. There are more than 50 later versions written by various authors, including Pergolesi (1735).Vivaldi’s opera begins with a Sinfonia for strings (Allegro) followed by two instrumental movements: Andante in cut time, and Allegro in 3/8 time. This edition includes just the first Allegro.There is an autograph copy in score format contained in the manuscript I-Tn, Foà 39, Bl. 1-140. The present edition is based on this manuscript.It is very interesting to mention that there is a violin concerto based on this same symphony (or perhaps the thematic transfer was from the concerto to the symphony). It is the violin concerto in C major rv 177.There are several sources for this concerto: Vivaldi’s autograph contained in the manuscript I-Tn, Foà 31, Bl. 14-25, in score format, and two sources in Dresden, the manuscript D-Dl, Mus. 2389-O-83 (score) and D-Dl, Mus. 2389-O-83a.The concerto includes some changes from the Sinfonia. Although these are different works, the connection between the two pieces seems obvious and the annotations that we find in the violin concerto could complement the information that appears in the Sinfonia. For this reason, it is interesting to mention these changes in this edition.

Abel was born in Köthen, a small German city, where his father, Christian Ferdinand Abel, had worked for years as the principal viola da gamba and cello player in the court orchestra. In 1723 Abel senior became director of the orchestra, when the previous director, Johann Sebastian Bach moved to Leipzig. The young Abel later boarded at Leipzig's Thomasschule, where he was taught by Bach. On Bach's recommendation in 1743 he was able to join Johann Adolph Hasse's court orchestra at Dresden where he remained for fifteen years.[3][5] In 1759 (or 1758 according to Chambers),[1] he went to England and became chamber-musician to Queen Charlotte, in 1764.[3][5] He gave a concert of his own compositions in London, performing on various instruments, one of which was a five-string cello known as a pentachord, which had been recently invented by John Joseph Merlin.[6] In 1762, Johann Christian Bach, the eleventh son of J.S. Bach, joined him in London, and the friendship between him and Abel led, in 1764 or 1765, to the establishment of the famous Bach-Abel concerts, England's first subscription concerts. In those concerts, many celebrated guest artists appeared, and many works of Haydn received their first English performance. For ten years the concerts were organized by Mrs. Theresa Cornelys, a retired Venetian opera singer who owned a concert hall at Carlisle House in Soho Square, then the height of fashionable events. In 1775 the concerts became independent of her, to be continued by Abel and Bach until Bach's death in 1782. Abel still remained in great demand as a player on various instruments new and old. He traveled to Germany and France between 1782 and 1785, and upon his return to London, became a leading member of the Grand Professional Concerts at the Hanover Square Rooms in Soho. Throughout his life he had enjoyed excessive living, and his drinking probably hastened his death, which occurred in London on 20 June 1787. One of Abel's works became famous due to a misattribution: in the 19th century, a manuscript symphony in the hand of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, was catalogued as his Symphony no. 3 in E flat, K. 18, and was published as such in the first complete edition of Mozart's works by Breitkopf & Härtel. Later, it was discovered that this symphony was actually the work of Abel, copied by the boy Mozart-evidently for study purposes-while he was visiting London in 1764. It is a summer piece and is based on three moments from Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream‘, writes Hans Werner Henze. This, however, is all we get to know from the composer regarding the work’s reference to Shakespeare’s comedy. On closer examination of the three-movement symphony it turns out that the first movement is a fantasia on Oberon’s order to Puck to search for the magic flower. In the second movement, Henze apparently set the love scenes between Titania and Bottom to music.
