Inkawu the Monkey is the thirteenth in a series of fifteen original contemporary compositions for piano, titled 15 Animal Compositions for Piano and created to musically describe the movement and habits of specific wildlife creatures. From music notes to words: Inkawu the monkey is very naughty and mischievous. Having spent the morning sitting in the sun while some females searched his fur for fleas, he is now in a hilariously expressive mood. Swinging from the branches of a huge African tree, he mocks everything and everybody around him, mimicking a scornful dance with his weird movements and giving the impression of being a funny clown in a circus. When he comes across a car loaded with passengers on a narrow road between the trees, he jumps straight onto the bonnet of the vehicle, pressing his face on the front window and pulling faces to amuse the surprised audience inside. He grins when they feed him oranges through a small opening of a nearly closed window and refusing to leave, he sits on the bonnet for almost an hour, filling up his tummy and satisfying his taste buds with the juicy citrus fruits. When he finally leaps off the car, he continues his merry ragtime dance until he disappears between the trees..

As years come and go, one increasingly recalls memories of earlier times. One of the most vivid and cherished memories I have while growing up is of Sunday mornings, going to church, sitting in the same pew each week with my grandmother, hearing and singing the beautiful hymns of our faith, and then returning home to the aroma of beef slowly roasting in the oven. My father directed the church choir, my mother and older brothers sang in the choir, so the wonderful music of our faith was instilled in me from an early age. This medley, and others in the series, are arrangements of many of my favorite hymns from those early years, many of which have been lost in more recent editions. For this series, I have mostly elected to use the older texts as that is the way they were first written and the way I first learned them. (*See below for more comment on the texts in this set.) There is a reverence and beauty in the language enriching the vocal tone which, I believe, is lost in contemporary, conversational, or politically correct syntax. I shudder to think of the day when a penitential phrase such as Hear thou my prayer, O Lord is rendered as Hey, God-dude, listen up - I'm talkin' atcha! I have also opted not to include the many wonderful hymns and carols which are associated with the major festivals of Christmas and Easter as those are commonly found in other collections. A caveat: I have no delusions, and I offer no pretenses, that these settings are great art. They are simply expressions of faith which I hope may bring a small measure of joy to other church musicians. The general concept of each medley is to present the hymn, often in its original chorale form, and then vary its harmony or texture. The hymns in this set are Children of the Heavenly Father, Day by Day, Thy Holy Wings, and Beautiful Savior. This collection of arrangements is also available for SATB voices and piano or piano solo.*A note on the texts in this set: Having grown up in a Swedish Lutheran church, the grandson of Swedish/Norwegian immigrants, and currently being choir director of another Swedish Lutheran church, these hymns have a special place for me. This medley of hymns was originally arranged for my church choir with the first verse of each in Swedish. Being under copyright, permission was obtained to use the more familiar English translations of the first three songs for local use. For this edition, I have opted to create my own texts for the first and third hymns while the second hymn is a translation in public domain. I have also provided a verse in English in lieu of the Swedish for those Nordically challenged. The fourth hymn is not a Swedish melody but for obvious reasons is a mainstay of the Lutheran hymnal. The second last piece of this album ‘Sunset’ is a depiction of the sun setting after a relaxed Sunday. The piece open with long-sustained chords in both hand which are reflective of the beauty, calmness, and peacefulness of the sun sitting among the landscape in the distance. This is emphasised by the slow tempo and the soft dynamics of the composition.As the piece moves away from the sustained chords, the an arpeggiated pattern is introduced in the left hand which adds some rhythm. The melody floats above this accompaniment and is unhurried and gentle. In the final section of ‘Sunset’ the right hand joins the left with it’s flowing arpeggiated motion to continue the calm and peaceful atmosphere.I don’t watch the sunset often so writing this piece allowed me to think about the feelings I have when I sit there and simply appreciate the beauty of this event that happens every day, something that goes largely unnoticed in our busy lives.

This choral work was originally written by John David for the band Airwaves in 1978. It was later arranged by Peter Knight and recorded by the King's Singers. This transcription for strings follows the very popular King's Singers version. The song is about 2 1/2 minutes long, and easy to read for all string parts. Doublestops could be skipped for beginning players. Bowings are included to facilitate uniform ensemble playing. It is a secular song but is often used by church choirs. It is a lovely ensemble piece when played by string quartet, and can be used for weddings, memorial services, or any occasion requiring hopeful or somber music. According to the composer: The inspiration for New Day was quite simple; I had just had a major blow in my personal life, and was sitting alone late at night on the settee feeling very low, and watching an ominous story on the news about the very real possibility of nuclear war. I started singing to the (hopefully) soon-to arrive New Day like it was an entity, that would rescue me from the depths. If the sun came up and the birds started singing as usual then I could believe that it really was the new day in which life would go on, and in which hope would survive.

The doctor came in shared those awful three words with us: You have cancer My mind went back about 25 years ago to a song I had written entitled: The higher the Mountain the better the view. The lines kept running through my mind. And my view was getting better all the time as by 2014 I had two cancers plus a return of the first cancer. Because of my troubles and the fact that God had lead me through the Valley of Cancer, I asked my friend, Randy Duck to record the song. We used the famous quartet, The Singing Ambassadors to do the back up vocals. Realizing that everyone has a mountain, it is our prayer that encouragement and hope be found in this message.

Memories about family, childhood and gatherings with friends. I remember my father making a Sunday meal after church and singing along to his favorite Christmas songs. There is the memory of sitting in a dimly lit room watching the bright lights of the tree blinking on and off. Our church choir singing beautifully on Christmas Eve is another heartfelt memory. While writing and arranging music for this Christmas album, I was grateful to dwell on so many treasured moments and it encouraged me to remember the most important part of Christmas.
