Six Thinking Hats for 3 violoncelli (in the first position) The title of these six pieces for cello trio refers to the theory of the Six Thinking Hats by Edward de Bono. This is a tool that provides a means for groups to think (plan and decide) together more effectively - or at least in a cohesive way. Six distinct states are identified and assigned a hat color: * Information (white hat): considering exclusively what information is available, what the facts are. * Emotions (red hat): instinctive gut reaction or statements of emotional feeling (but not without any justification) * Bad points judgment (black hat): logic applied to identifying flaws or barriers, seeking mismatch (the cons of an issue). * Good points judgment (yellow hat): logic applied to identifying benefits, seeking harmony (the pros). * Creativity (green hat): statements of provocation and investigation, seeing where a thought goes. * Thinking (blue hat) - thinking about thinking, a control instance. In my Trio, these color hats are assigned to different characters or moods. For instance the red hat is the most emotional last piece, very rhythmical. Or the black hat corresponds to a reflexive, rational piece which is not pessimistic but rather extreme reflexive, pondering. Or the blue hat, which should reflect the thinking about thinking and is therefore a canon. Technically speaking, all pieces are written for cello in the first position (sometimes extended or stretched), which makes them quite suitable for young cellists or adult beginners. The total duration of the work is about 12 minutes. The durations of the single pieces are: I = Enfática insistencia (white hat) [1'00] II = Milonga serena (yellow hat) [1'45] III = Estado de alerta (green hat) [1'45] IV = Canon arcaizante (blue hat) [4'00] V = Coral en quintas (black hat) [1'00] VI = Finale arrabbiato (red hat) [2'30] All these pieces can be performed individually. These six pieces for three cellists were composed in Bremen (and Worpswede) between 20th and 29th February 2012. They are dedicated to Juliane Dehning (who also kindly made essential suggestions about the bowings). ISBN 9790570483471.I wrote these pieces towards the end of summer 2014 at the request of various flautist colleagues who were telling me I should get back to writing for flute and piano. Five of the six pieces are dedicated to musician colleagues; all flautists except Walter the percussionist. The sixth is to myself, perhaps a portait of the artist as a young boy. These compositions, however, are not really meant to be portaits, just pieces dedicated to people I work with, and to some extent inspired by how I see them, so I have called them Sketches. The Sketches offer short expositions of themes which I hope will be enjoyable to play and to listen to. They offer some technical challenges for the flautist but are mostly in a 'medium difficulty' range, in attractive jazz/pop styles.

The preludes are in the key of C major and are among Bach's most famous works. They are short pieces, each lasting about two minutes in duration. The preludes demonstrate Bach's mastery of counterpoint and his ability to create complex, interesting musical textures. The rhythmic material in this series is organized into 10 difficulty levels. Each difficulty level contains four exercises in each of the following time signatures: 2/4, 3/4, 4/4, 6/8, 9/8, and 12/8. This gives exercises in 2, 3, and 4 beats per bar in both simple and compound meters. The first two exercises of each time signature have no ties while the remaining two exercises in each time signature include ties. In Book 1 of this series you’ll find difficulty levels 1 to 5, while Book 2 completes the set with levels 6 to 10. The exercises in this collection are intentionally random and difficult to internalize. They don’t follow any predictable or standard groove pattern, but instead are random successions of eighth- and sixteenth-note groupings within the prescribed difficulty level. In keeping the rhythmic material as unpredictable as possible the door is left open for the materials to be used in conjunction with any number of exercises, while forcing the user to process every rhythm as its own event without relying on pattern recognition to help in identifying the rhythms. To curate the difficulty of rhythm in as objective a way as possible I looked at all of the possible eighth-note and sixteenth-note groupings within the basic unit of one beat. Each difficulty level builds on the exercises of the previous by adding groupings that are slightly more conceptually challenging. Difficulty Level 9 contains all possible groupings, while Level 10 focuses on the more challenging groupings by omitting easy ones. Some suggestions for how to use this book include: Practice sight-reading. When doing so it is encouraged to cycle through the exercises quickly rather than dwelling on a particular exercise for a long period of time. The goal in practising sight-reading is not to learn the material but to develop the skill of reading new material. Use a metronome! The most important thing you can do with this material is learn how to read these rhythms and play them in time. Advanced metronome work: Place the metronome click on weak beats. With the metronome clicking only on the beat you run the risk of relying on the metronome to give you the time. Placing the metronome click on non-strong beats forces you to take responsibility for the time. For example, instead of putting the metronome click on each quarter-note in 4/4, play the exercise with the metronome giving the second eighth note of each beat, or the last sixteenth note, or beats 2 and 4, or only the downbeat of each bar. Be creative with this one! The possibilities are limitless. Develop independence between hands by playing a repeating pattern in one hand while reading an exercise in the other. Expand on this by adding patterns in hands and feet while reading a rhythm with a remaining limb. This is a great exercise for drummers and percussionists but any instrumentalist could benefit from coordination practice. Use these rhythms to practice scales. Instead of playing scales in straight sixteenth-notes, try playing them in the rhythms given in these exercises. Write in sticking patterns, dynamics, accents, phrase marks, or other articulations for you or your students to practice. If you’re not happy with the ties I included, feel free to add some of your own. Combine the above exercises in any way that you think will be beneficial to your practice. As with any of the Dots and Beams books, the uses for this particular collection are limited only by the imagination of the musician using it. I encourage anybody using this book to find as many uses for these exerci.

Francesco Molino was an Italian musician and composer, born at Ivrea near Turin on 4 June 1768. At the age of fifteen, in 1783, he enrolled in the band of the Piedmont Regiment as an oboist, a post from which he resigned in 1793. He often traveled to Spain to give concerts. From 1786 to 1789, he played the viola in the orchestra of the Teatro Regio in Turin, and from 1814 to 1818, he was employed in the royal chapel in Turin. By 1817 he had published two guitar methods. Then in about 1820, he moved to Paris where he was very active as a teacher and composer, until his death there in 1847. His works were largely neglected until the twentieth century when many of them were republished. Have fun! Aggressively insistentThe genesis of this diminutive composition, and its subsequent title Six Forays for Flute and Clarinet had its inception at a dinner party held by flutist, Emily McKay. Jeremy and Emily were planning a collaboration including a CD recording featuring flute and clarinet music, and wanted me to compose a piece for them. I decided against a formal plan, and began in a sense, to unravel sound organization from the inside out. Imagining myself an audience participant, I wanted to hear clarity through brevity. I definitely did not want to impose gimmickry, but did choose to play with slight pitch bending-something to arouse the listener, but not to bore her with 20th century musical clichés. The result is a six-movement piece, around six minutes long. Organizing the music through titles allows for imagination for both the listener and the performers.Beauty of tone, magnificent musicianship, and virtuosity-these qualities in instrumentalists inspire all who create music. I am very grateful to Emily McKay and Jeremy Reynolds for commissioning me to write this music for them.
