The present cycle of six bagatelles was created on the occasion of the final examination Master Piano by Hector Docx, who studied in my composition class at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater from 2017 to 2020. He had rehearsed Ludwig van Beethoven's Bagatelles, Op. 126, for the occasion and consulted composers to write new bagatelles to be performed along with Beethoven's last piano work. This is how the later fourth Bagatelle first came into being, which takes up the tempo as well as an essential element of Beethoven's material, and from this follows an approach that is consistent in form and content. After the successful premiere, the idea arose to build a six-part cycle from it, which is oriented to Beethoven's material throughout. The cycle can be performed either together and in alternation with or independently and without Beethoven's Bagatelles, whereby a performance of the third Bagatelle without Beethoven makes little sense. The premiere of all the Bagatelles in conjunction with Beethoven's Bagatelles took place on September 26, 2020 at the Tonali Hall in Hamburg. Hector Docx played.

Jean-Baptiste Sebastien Bréval (1753-1823) was a French cellist and composer, who is, perhaps, best known for his cello sonatas, namely the ones in C major (Op. 40, No. 1) and G major (Op. 12, No. 5). Bréval was one of the last students of the cellist and composer Martin Berteau (1691-1771), continuing his teacher’s tradition of composing sonatas for cello with bass accompaniment. With both composers, the bass part was to be played by a second cello, very likely by the cello teacher. Many cellists opt in to have Berteau’s unfigured bass part realised by a harpsichord. However, the two-cello layout was common in the late Classical Era, especially in method books, such as Bréval’s own Traité du violoncelle (where Bréval states that the bass and the cello are one and the same), as well as Romberg’s, Dotzauer’s, et al. Romberg and Dotzauer even composed sonatas for cello and basso (second cello) accompaniment as well, Op. 43 and Op. 103, respectively. Our current publication presents student cellists with a beautifully engraved edition of Bréval’s 6 Cello Sonatas, Op. 28 and Air de Malborough, Op. 13. Bréval composed the Sonatas in c1795, most likely in conjunction with Op. 40, since Op. 28, No. 1 picks up right where Op. 40, No. 6 leaves off. Whereas Op. 40 and Op. 28, Nos. 1-4 are in two fast movements, Op. 28, Nos. 5 and 6 include a slow middle movement, No. 6 even using the thumb. The autograph, which the editor used as the primary source, and the first edition both present each sonata on four pages in score form. Our volume includes a score and parts for each player. The cello part includes fingering and bowing suggestions by Yuriy Leonovich. Each sonata begins with an Allegro movement in sonata form. The finales vary from five-part rondos (Nos. 1, 3, 5), to sonata form (Nos. 2, 6), to theme and variations (No. 4). The slow movement of No. 5 is in simple binary form, and No. 6 is in simple ternary. The six keys Bréval used for Op. 28 are the same as the ones he used for Op. 40, only in a different order. Op. 40 uses the following order: C, F, G, B-flat, A, D. Op. 28 uses the following order: D, C, A, G, B-flat, F. The Op. 28 sonatas are primarily written in tenor clef, whereas Op. 40 is primarily written in bass clef. The playing range is identical for both sets, with the exception of the high B-flat in m. 46 in the slow movement of No. 6, and high B and C in m. 37 of the finale of No. 6. Bréval explores more advanced bow techniques as well.

I am a Singaporean pianist and composer. I have studied the piano since 5 years old under Mr Joseph Toh and I graduated from LASALLE College of the Arts with a Diploma in Music in 2013, majoring in Music Composition under Malaysian composer Mr Chong Kee Yong and Singaporean composer Mrs Joyce Koh Bee Tuan. About Six Preludes I started composing this set of Six Preludes for piano in 2014 and revised in 2020. The first piece of this set is Walking. There are different types of walks one can imagine. Octaves in the left hand at the opening represents walking sluggishly, whilst the middle section’s running right hand and jokingly bass notes representing a quick stroll. The Adagio recititavo part represents tip-toeing and finally the quasi cadenza part represents a trip on the floor, ouch! The second piece, which is nicknamed Joke, is a parody of Chopin’s Scherzo no. 1 in B minor, Op. 20. Take this piece as a lame unfunny joke, as in the slow coda, which is a sigh after listening to this joke. Night Song, as the name says, means a piece to be played at night, most commonly associate with pieces like Nocturnes, Barcarolles etc. The fourth piece, Chopin, is a homage to Chopin. I chose his Prelude in G and B flat minor, Op. 28 no. 3 and no. 16 respectively as sources of inspirations. Vision is a poly-tonality piece. Sometimes what we think or see, may not always end up the way it is. Hence, I hope to create this double effect by using the keys at the same time. The final piece of this set is a Fughetta. A fughetta is a small fugue. This piece is actually a piano transcription of the 3rd movement of my Three Colours (for Clarinet in B flat, Violin and Cello) which is composed and premiered in 2012. I revised and edited some sections. This is a 12-tone work. The P0 and R0 makes up the subject of this piece, while R11 makes up the countersubject. Six Preludes is dedicated to my friend Ng Yu Fei.

Six Thinking Hats for 3 violoncelli (in the first position) The title of these six pieces for cello trio refers to the theory of the Six Thinking Hats by Edward de Bono. This is a tool that provides a means for groups to think (plan and decide) together more effectively - or at least in a cohesive way. Six distinct states are identified and assigned a hat color: * Information (white hat): considering exclusively what information is available, what the facts are. * Emotions (red hat): instinctive gut reaction or statements of emotional feeling (but not without any justification) * Bad points judgment (black hat): logic applied to identifying flaws or barriers, seeking mismatch (the cons of an issue). * Good points judgment (yellow hat): logic applied to identifying benefits, seeking harmony (the pros). * Creativity (green hat): statements of provocation and investigation, seeing where a thought goes. * Thinking (blue hat) - thinking about thinking, a control instance. In my Trio, these color hats are assigned to different characters or moods. For instance the red hat is the most emotional last piece, very rhythmical. Or the black hat corresponds to a reflexive, rational piece which is not pessimistic but rather extreme reflexive, pondering. Or the blue hat, which should reflect the thinking about thinking and is therefore a canon. Technically speaking, all pieces are written for cello in the first position (sometimes extended or stretched), which makes them quite suitable for young cellists or adult beginners. The total duration of the work is about 12 minutes. The durations of the single pieces are: I = Enfática insistencia (white hat) [1'00] II = Milonga serena (yellow hat) [1'45] III = Estado de alerta (green hat) [1'45] IV = Canon arcaizante (blue hat) [4'00] V = Coral en quintas (black hat) [1'00] VI = Finale arrabbiato (red hat) [2'30] All these pieces can be performed individually. These six pieces for three cellists were composed in Bremen (and Worpswede) between 20th and 29th February 2012. It was not recorded specifically that Chocolate Beard liked to sing but knowing that all pirates like a good sing-a-long after a bottle of rum or two, I am speculating that he and his crew on occasion probably crooned out Yo ho ho and a jar of carob-coated licorice drops - a tune worthy of any self-respecting pirate. The talents of Cuban-born violinist Joseph White (born José Silvestre de los Dolores White y Lafitte) were recognized by the American pianist and composer Louis Moreau Gottschalk (1829-1869) who had accompanied him on an early recital. Gottschalk raised the money so the young Afro-Cuban virtuoso could go to Paris and study with Jean-Delphin Alard, one of the great violinists and teachers of his day. White won the Premier Prix at the conservatory in 1855 and received high accolades from such musical giants as Berlioz, Gounod, Rossini, and Saint-Saëns, as well as German violin virtuosi Ferdinand David and Joseph Joachim. Following his 1855 prize (one of several more to come) Joseph White became a major force in the cultural life of Paris for the next twenty years. His Six Studies, Op. 13, demonstrate to those were never privileged to hear him his absolute command of his instrument. The overall set is dedicated to Alard with individual studies dedicated to Alard and to four of Europe’s premiere violinists, Camillo Sivori, Henri Vieuxtemps, Henryk Wienawski, Hubert Léonard, as well as to his fellow Cuban, Secondino Arango. These are studies for the serious violinist, or for the advanced student aspiring to achieve the same technical prowess of this incredible virtuoso performer and composer. Contained within this volume are the original exercises, biographies of the six dedicatees, as well as extra information about the life and career of this criminally forgotten violin virtuoso. These works should be considered for the studios of master teachers and for live performance as virtuoso showpieces, or recital encores, especially number six, which is dedicated to one of White's first teachers, Afro-Cuban violin virtuoso Secundino Arango (179?-1876).

They are traditionally played on Holocaust Day, which is on the 28th day of the Hebrew month of Nissan in Israel, or January 27th in the rest of the world. Unter Dyne Vyse Shteren (Under the Starry Sky) was written by Avraham Sutskover, a leading Yiddish poet, while trapped in the ghetto of Vilna, in July 1943. Days before the ghetto was destroyed and all the Jews murdered, Sutskover escaped to the forest with his wife. He reached Russia, and in 1947 moved to Palestine. He died in Israel in 2010 at the age of 96. The poem was set to music by Avraham Brodna, a simple laborer in the Vilna ghetto who died in a concentration camp. Ani Maamin (I Believe): The words to this simple song are of the Jewish prayer I believe with perfect faith in the coming of the Messiah. The tune is attributed to Azriel David Festig, a leading Warsaw hazzan (cantor) who died in the Holocaust. The song was performed after the war by Rabbi Shaul Yedidia Eliezer Taub, the Admor (Rabbinical leader) of the Modzitz Hassidic sect, and has become the iconic song of the remembrance in the Hassidic community. Shtiller Shtiller (Hush Hush) was written by Alexander Volkovitzky, then a 12-year-old boy, in the Vilna Ghetto in the spring of 1943. Volkovitzky, who wrote the melody for a song contest organized to encourage the cultural life of the ghetto, eventually came to Israel where he (under the name Alexander Tamir) became a leading pianist and music educator. The words are by Shmerke Kacserginsky, a leading poet of Vilna, who later escaped the Holocaust and migrated to South America. Papirossen (Cigarettes) actually predates the Holocaust by 15 years. It was written by Yiddish actor and composer Herman Yablokoff in 1922 in Grodno, Poland. Yablokoff later immigrated to America, where he produced a musical Papirossen that incorporated the song. It was later made famous by the Barry Sisters, a Yiddish popular music group. Donna Donna was written by Shalom Secunda, with words by Aaron Zeitlin for the Yiddish musical Esterke in 1940. Though the song originally related to the 600-year-old legend of a Polish king who married a Jewess, it quickly became associated with the Holocaust because of its haunting message. The song has entered the popular folk repertoire, with canonical renditions by Joan Baez, Theodore Bikel, and many others. Hatikva (the Hope) is Israel's national anthem. The words are by Naftali Zvi Imber, and the tune is a traditional eastern European tune. You are welcome to try some of my other arrangements. The rhythmic material in this series is organized into 10 difficulty levels. Each difficulty level contains four exercises in each of the following time signatures: 2/4, 3/4, 4/4, 6/8, 9/8, and 12/8. This gives exercises in 2, 3, and 4 beats per bar in both simple and compound meters. The first two exercises of each time signature have no ties while the remaining two exercises in each time signature include ties. In Book 1 of this series you’ll find difficulty levels 1 to 5, while Book 2 completes the set with levels 6 to 10. The exercises in this collection are intentionally random and difficult to internalize. They don’t follow any predictable or standard groove pattern, but instead are random successions of eighth- and sixteenth-note groupings within the prescribed difficulty level. In keeping the rhythmic material as unpredictable as possible the door is left open for the materials to be used in conjunction with any number of exercises, while forcing the user to process every rhythm as its own event without relying on pattern recognition to help in identifying the rhythms. To curate the difficulty of rhythm in as objective a way as possible I looked at all of the possible eighth-note and sixteenth-note groupings within the basic unit of one beat. Each difficulty level builds on the exercises of the previous by adding groupings that are slightly more conceptually challenging. Difficulty Level 9 contains all possible groupings, while Level 10 focuses on the more challenging groupings by omitting easy ones. Some suggestions for how to use this book include: Practice sight-reading. When doing so it is encouraged to cycle through the exercises quickly rather than dwelling on a particular exercise for a long period of time. The goal in practising sight-reading is not to learn the material but to develop the skill of reading new material. Use a metronome! The most important thing you can do with this material is learn how to read these rhythms and play them in time. Advanced metronome work: Place the metronome click on weak beats. With the metronome clicking only on the beat you run the risk of relying on the metronome to give you the time. Placing the metronome click on non-strong beats forces you to take responsibility for the time. For example, instead of putting the metronome click on each quarter-note in 4/4, play the exercise with the metronome giving the second eighth note of each beat, or the last sixteenth note, or beats 2 and 4, or only the downbeat of each bar. Be creative with this one! The possibilities are limitless. Develop independence between hands by playing a repeating pattern in one hand while reading an exercise in the other. Expand on this by adding patterns in hands and feet while reading a rhythm with a remaining limb. This is a great exercise for drummers and percussionists but any instrumentalist could benefit from coordination practice. Use these rhythms to practice scales. Instead of playing scales in straight sixteenth-notes, try playing them in the rhythms given in these exercises. Satie also found inspiration in Greek antiquity and French literature, most notably his Socrate. Jean Racine's (1639-1699) tragedy Andromaque (1667) inspired these duets. Racine took his characters from Greek and Roman stories and adapted or created new situations for them in accordance with baroque fascination with neo-classicism in literature. Andromaque is a love quadrangle in which all who love die or go insane. Only the prisoner-queen Andromaque, who is incapable of love, survives. Andromaque, icy cold, rejects amorous advances from her captor Phyrrus. She plots her survival, trying desperately to save her infant son Astyanax from the Greek ambassador Oreste who would have her Trojan line finished off for good. The baby Astyanax sleeps silently, unaware of the deadly drama surrounding him. Does he nap peacefully? Or does he dream, like his mother, of revenge for the death of his conquered father, the great Trojan warrior king Hector? Phyrrus awkwardly tries to sweet-talk his captive Andromaque into marriage. She rejects him until he becomes furious and threatens to kill her son Astyanax unless she agrees to wed. Phyrrus alternates between threats and cajoling. Hermione loves Phyrrus, who decides to marry Andromaque instead. She rejects her own suitor Oreste, until she vengefully has him kill Phyrrus. Oreste does her bidding, only to be rewarded by a final rejection. She accuses Oreste of being a murderous monster. When Hermione sees the body of Phyrrus, she kills herself. The Greek soldier and ambassador Oreste sailed to Epire to persuade King Phyrrus to kill or hand over the infant Astyanax, last of the line of Troy. Oreste is torn between duty and love for usury Hermione. Her broken promises and final rejection affect him profoundly. Oreste goes insane upon learning of her death.
