Horn,Trombone,Trumpet,Tuba - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1149129 By John Coltrane. By John Coltrane. Arranged by Keith Terrett. 20th Century,Blues,Jazz,Multicultural,Standards,World. 11 pages. Keith Terrett #749258. Published by Keith Terrett (A0.1149129). An arrangement of John Coltrane's classic Equinox for Brass Quintet with optional drum kit. Equinox is a minor blues jazz standard by American jazz saxophone player and composer John Coltrane. Originally released on Coltrane's Sound[ played in C# minor with a slow swing feel. However, it is usually played in the key of C Minor and often covered on the flute Coltrane’s wife Naima named the song Equinox. The equinox occur twice a year, when the tilt of the Earth’s axis is inclined neither away from nor towards the sun. John Coltrane was born on September 23, 1926, the day of the official autumn equinox of that year. The release of Equinox was delayed until 1964 when Atlantic issued the album Coltrane’s Sound. Before he recorded it, Coltrane performed Equinox several times in live venues, including a session with Miles Davis’ rhythm section and at the 1960 Monterey Jazz Festival. Unfortunately, the other Atlantic recordings of Equinox were lost in the 1978 warehouse fire before they were released.Unlike Naima and My Favorite Things, Equinox would not become part of Coltrane's repertoire. Coltrane's attitude in writing Equinox is described by Dr Lewis Porter as Coltrane was a serious blues player and his blues pieces reflect the desire to get back to a primal mood, and away from the emotionally lighter, harmonically more complicated and complex blues of the boppers. Equinox is introduced by McCoy Tyner and Elvin Jones with a Latin rhythmic passage which shifts into the slower tempo of the theme. The composition evokes a sense of mystery. Coltrane then enters on the horn (a tenor), his playing slow and pensive. The theme is repeated for two choruses and then stating the theme twice. He then proceeds with an improvisation of unusual emotional depth - reminiscent of a preacher exhorting his congregation. Elvin Jones make dramatic use of drum rolls and cymbal crashes throughout the song to maintain the sense of mystery. McCoy Tyner comps with a light feel.

Piano Solo - Digital Download SKU: A0.990153 Composed by Don Bowyer (Sunway University). Contemporary. Score. 22 pages. Dolphin Don's Music School #6434599. Published by Dolphin Don's Music School (A0.990153). Five Preludes is a set of short pieces for solo piano, exploring various sounds and ideas. Each prelude is one to two minutes in length.Prelude 1: Play-ludeThe main idea of this prelude uses parallel fourths in the left hand with short, dissonant statements in the right hand. The contrasting second idea has a tonal bass line progression below a chromatic figure. The 3/8 time signature gives the piece a quasi-swing feel.Prelude 2: Pray-ludeThis prelude alternates between F major and Gb major, with slow reflective melodic statements over sustained roots. The statements gradually become shorter and shorter until the recapitulation.Prelude 3: Pre-lewdThis whimsical prelude uses a five-note synthetic scale throughout (1, m3, P4, m6, M7), but the scale modulates in a pattern that suggests a standard 16-measure blues progression. There is a repeating figure in the bass using the same modulating scale.Prelude 4: Prelude SolitudeThis slow prelude in 7/4 time has an ostinato bass line that never varies. The six notes of the bass line (Eb, E, F, Ab, A, Bb) form a synthetic scale from which the entire piece is derived.Prelude 5: Pre-ludicrousThis prelude uses the same six-note synthetic scale throughout (C, Eb, E, G, Ab, B). Harmonic motion is established through a repeated bass line, with chords built from every other note of the scale.

Horn,Tenor Saxophone,Trombone,Trumpet,Tuba - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1351942 By Dinah Shore. By Jule Styne and Sammy Cahn. Arranged by F. Leslie Smith. 20th Century,Jazz,Pop,Standards. 20 pages. Sweetwater Brass Press #936564. Published by Sweetwater Brass Press (A0.1351942). “I’ll Walk Alone†is a World War II era ballad whose poignant melody sounds as though it could have been written just yesterday.  First introduced in the 1944 movie Follow the Boys, it was hugely popular and has since been recorded by numerous artists.   Universal Pictures produced Follow the Boys in an effort to help boost morale for both overseas military and folks on the home front.  Despite being filled with stars and songs, critics tended to dismiss it as hokey and trite.  The exception was a scene in which Dinah Shore sang “I’ll Walk Alone.† Nominated for the Academy Award for Best Original Song, Ms. Shore’s follow-up Victor recording spent 20 weeks on the top ten Best Selling Records chart.  The song was used yet again in 1952 for another motion picture, With a Song in My Heart, the Jane Froman biographical film, and the melody eventually developed as a standard, particularly in the world of jazz.   Sammy Cahn’s lyrics for this song express the feelings and the promise of a woman who has been separated from her lover by the war.  She pledges that she will be true, that she will wait for him, and that “'till you're walking beside me, I'll walk alone.† Jule Styne’s melody is both plaintiff and simple. an eight-measure phrase, a repeat of the phrase, an eight-measure second phrase, then another repeat of the first phrase.   For this arrangement, the suggested tempo is a relatively slow, blues-like 72 bpm.  It features a tenor saxophone as lead and solo instrument accompanied by brass quintet.  A four-measure introduction opens the piece with Trumpet 1 playing melody and the other four brass providing background.  Following the intro, Tenor Sax plays its first three notes alone; the other instruments begin their accompaniment on measure 6.  Trumpet 1 is tacit during measures 6-11 but begins adding counterpoint in measure 12.     In performing this arrangement, brass instruments should ensure that, when the Sax plays, their volume as a group is under (i.e., softer than) the melody.  The exception begins at measure 36, when a crescendo leads to the quintet playing fortissimo.  During this section, the Tenor Sax plays a couple of responses.  At measures 43 a decrescendo lowers the brass volume back to its original soft accompaniment level.  The piece ends with brass recapping the introduction and Sax providing a final statement.   This piece, completed in 2023, consists of 57 measures, a little over three minutes in length.  Written in the key of G major, Tuba’s lowest note is a G below the staff.  Other than that, all notes are well within the normal playing range of each instrument.   The arranger, Les Smith, will be happy to provide substitute parts (for example, treble clef baritone for trombone) at no charge.  He would like to receive your suggestions, comments, corrections and criticisms.  Contact him at lessmith61@bellsouth.net.  For more arrangements by Les, enter Sweetwater Brass Press (without the quotation marks) in the Sheet Music Plus or Sheet Music Direct search box.

Apples and Oranges: features inverted melodies that trade between the bassoon and piano 3. Yellow Bellied: this slinking movement slides between major and minor. 4. Green-Eyed Monster: aggressive and sliding, this miniature focuses on slurs and phrasing. 5. Feelin' Blue: inspired by bluesey scales, this miniature features a long, slow ritardando at the end. 6. The American Seasons (score – violin and string orchestra) MO148AScore (parts available)Music by Mark O’Connor99 pages - 38:00 minutes in length The American Seasons(Seasons Of An American Life)The American Seasons (Seasons Of An American Life) is a concerto for Violin And Chamber Orchestra. Composed in 1999, the music celebrates the various stages of an American life at the waking of the 21st century. Constructed in four movements and representing four stages of life, birth, adolescence, maturity and old age, the music also pays homage to Shakespeare's Seasons Of Man His acts being seven ages, incorporated throughout the work.Spring introduces the ideas of birth and infancy. After the principal theme has been stated, there is a violin cadenza encountering all twelve major keys and a 13/8 time signature representing the ancient golden ratio. These elements recall birth with all the possibilities a new life offers. Ending the movement, the principal theme is repeated with more complexity... as if posing life's questions.Summer represents the excitement and bravado of youthful adolescence and young adulthood. For the style of this movement I use a happy-go-lucky Blues voice which melds into Swing. I identify swing rhythm in all of 20th century American music culture as a common thread that runs through Ragtime through Rock and Roll on to Rap. Swing means testing the waters and pushing the envelope for lovers and soldiers.Fall is the slow movement symbolizing the wisdom of maturity. It is a peaceful theme with nostalgic strokes. It is a time for sincere reflection and enjoying ones accomplishments in life.Winter embodies the complexities and knowledge of an older person and that of a dying person. The movement begins with the principal them from Spring, but with a dissonance that emanates from a lifetime full of emotions and responsibilities. In the middle of the movement is a transition to an old world. I use my personal ancestry from Ireland as a foundation from which to rediscover one's lineage and explore the meaning and value of a cultural legacy. The exploration evolves into a four- and five-part fugue with a reel, jig, air, countered bass and the motif from the principal theme. All these elements, dances and melodies appear simultaneously and converge to form a unique insight to life's consequences from a historical perspective. Following the fugue, the principal theme finds its way back in. It sounds much as it did at birth. In the end, the solo violin cadenza carries the last earthly breaths before the violin and orchestra once again join in harmony to focus on a new life being transformed somewhere else. Life's four seasons in perpetuity. The American Seasons (violas part – violin and string orchestra) MO148FViolas Part (score and parts available)Music by Mark O’Connor42 pages - 38:00 minutes in length The American Seasons(Seasons Of An American Life)The American Seasons (Seasons Of An American Life) is a concerto for Violin And Chamber Orchestra. Original music printed from the composer’s manuscripts.Music editing, copying and engraving by Mark O’Connorusing Finale on Apple Macintosh 1999 Composed by Mark O’ConnorCommissioned by the Troy Savings Bank Concert Hall for their 2000 Celebration Can be heard on American Seasons Sony Classical and The Essential Mark O’Connor Sony ClassicalMark O’Connor - violin, Metamorphosen Chamber Orchestra, Scott Yoo Catalogue Number MO148FCopyright © 1999 by Mark O’Connor Music International For more information on violinist and composer Mark O'Connor, O’Connor String Camps, Touring Ensembles, Discography, Bio, Repertoire and more, please visitwww.markoconnor.com For information on the O’Connor Method – instructional book series for violin, viola, cello and school string orchestra programs:
