German • English • French.Ferdinand Küchler is regarded as one of the great violin teachers of the 20th century. Apart from his Violin Method, it is, above all, his concertinos that are an absolute must for the development of any violin pupil, especially his famous Concertino in G major Op. 11 (Schott SE 1001) as well as his Concertino in D major Op. 15 which both enjoy great popularity. Composed in the style of Antonio Vivaldi, the work has, without doubt, been one of the most frequently played works in student violin literature for decades. It is the perfect educational link to Vivaldi's somewhat more difficult student concertos. The completely baroque-style movements appeal to every pupil. The fast outer movements contain rewarding, always seemingly violinistic runs and idiomatic figurations. The appeal of the slow middle movement lies in its simple, yet tonally demanding Siciliano theme. The works requires knowledge of the 2nd and 3rd positions and is here presented in a new modern edition. Bowing, articulation and fingerings are based on today's experience of interpreting Vivaldi's music, providing creative space and possibilities for personal ideas in modern violin lessons. Published by Artaria Editions (A0.1487803). Three movements from these two sonatas became part of the cello literature due to an arrangement by Alfredo Piatti(1822-1901). Piatti's arrangement, while extending the literature for cello, took considerable liberty with the material. The three movements of the Locatelli-Piatti sonata are originally movements from the two Locatelli violin sonatas arranged in this edition for cello and continuo. Piatti's arrangement used the second and third movements of the Sonata in D Major, Op. 6 No. 6 , and the first movement of the Sonata in D Minor, Op. 6 No. 12. Pietro Antonio Locatelli (1695-1764) was an Italian composer and violinist who moved to Amsterdam in 1729. He was a virtuoso violinist, and his compositions are all concertos, sonatas and violin caprices. The twelve violin sonatas of Opus 6,1 published in Amsterdam in 1737, are considered to be among Locatelli's best works. The sonatas of Opus 6 generally follow the pattern found in No.6: a three movement scheme with a slow first movement, a fast middle movement, and concluding with a third movement set of variations, often on a minuet theme. No. 12 is a surprise, having five movements the last of which is a Capriccio, a predominantly solo movement subtitled Prova del intonatione. David Starkweather.

Flute Concerto (2006) was commissioned by flutist Judith von Hopf and theKiev Philharmonic and premiered by them under the direction of GuidoLamell. The work is in two movements: Chanson and Fantasy Variations.The first movement, Chanson, is an extended “song†that develops through avariety of textures. The opening song material is centered around G#. In turn,this G# is revealed to be a quasi-dominant of a D centered sonority. (A briefcoda returns to G#, in preparation for the D center of the second movement.)The second movement, Fantasy Variations, is cast as two presentations ofthe theme surrounding five free variations, plus a coda. The theme serves asthe basis of the musical material for each variation as well as the structuraltemplate for each. Also, each variation contains material referring backspecifically to the previous variation.The opening theme is declamatory and massive. The first variation is fastand limber. The second variation is introspective and stratified. The thirdvariation is fleeting. The fourth variation is distant and spare. The fifthvariation is fast and driving. The final theme begins whispered and slowlyregains its declamatory nature before a brief and intense coda ends the workin a blaze.This item is the score and the solo part only.
