In 2015 Mount Vernon Music commissioned a piece for children from composer Benedikt Brydern for use in outreach performances in East Texas schools. Based on the Grimm’s fairy tale The Bremen Town Musicians, the work was made even more accessible to children by the addition of illustrations by artist Madeline Crist. Brydern’s The Town Musicians, A Musical Adventure for narrator, flute, violin, viola and cello was premiered in June 2015. Since then MVM has taken it into many schools, performing it for thousands of young listeners. The impression this piece makes on children who otherwise have no opportunity to see orchestra productions (e.g. Peter & the Wolf) is profound. In order to share this delightful music with as many children as possible, MVM created a bilingual book and CD in English and Spanish, and a version in German and English. These recordings pair Mount Vernon Music’s own Orchard Ensemble with narration by professional Hollywood actors Will Ryan, Elke Sommer and Jordi Caballero. Words that come to mind about this piece are strange, edgy, and fun. In just over a minute the music moves seamlessly through four different styles. I think of it as invoking images of mutant creatures wreaking havoc on a small town in a 1950's monster movie. Toads is meant to be OUT. The first section has a minor blues feeling even though it does not have have a minor blues harmonic structure. The solo fills (on E+7 and Db7) are fairly short on the demo recording. They can be played longer and have more of an avant-garde spirit. The second section has an angular melody line, with an emphasis on major 7th intervals, and shifting time. It can start softly and build in volume to the third section. The third section is also angular; however, there is a melodic shift from major 7th intervals to fourths & tri-tones and the rhythm section is in a more straight-ahead style. Finally, the fourth section (last 4 measures) has a funk feeling. Everyone knows how special the star was for the birth of Jesus. The star guided many along the way to find the manger that Mary, Joseph and the newborn baby, Jesus were at. This cantata reflects the importance of the star during that time. Most of the songs have lyrics about the star. The cantata starts off with Mary finding out from the angel that God chose her to bear his son - Ave Maria was redone for this advent moment. It keeps to the melody and Ave Maria words are still part of the lyrics. Some of the lyrics have the English translation in the song, while other lyrics are new for this Christmas song. The next song O Little Town of Bethlehem is where Mary and Joseph have to travel to pay their taxes and where Jesus is born. This is where the star shines down for all to see. This is the traditional song, but I have added extra lyrics at the end of each original verse. Next, the shepherds seeing the star decide to travel to Bethlehem. Pachelbel Canon is so iconic, but I have added lyrics from While Shepherds watched their flocks by night, Away in a Manger, What Child is This and The First Noel. The choir parts bring rich harmonies to the piece. The Angels said leave your sheep and leave your lambs. Rise up Shepherd and Follow. Now we are at the manger. I composed the song - A Little Baby. He was born to save us all. . Still, Still, Still “Tis the Night of Our Savior’s Birth has added lyrics to each verse that ties in with the original lyrics. The title of this cantata is They Saw A Star - this is from the song I composed with the same title. It not only brings in the shepherds, but also the Three Wisemen. To close out this cantata, I have used the lyrics from We Three Kings and the melody of Scarborough Fair. This arrangement has an SA duet with SSAA choir parts with ahhs that sound very mysterious. It also does include parts for strings if you are lucky enough to have violins and a cello. The strings parts are the same as the choir parts, so it is perfectly fine to do this with just a choir. I hope you enjoy singing and listening to this cantata—Connie BossI didn't have a minimum copy, so you can make copies of this. This is the twenty-fifth volume of an extensive collection of folk songs arranged for the classical guitar mostly in two-part counterpoint. The arrangements are of moderate difficulty and the aims of this publication are to familiarise, entertain and educate guitarists (and other musicians) with a melodic repertoire of lasting aesthetic value, under the light of contrapuntal treatment. The thirty five volumes of this collection can certainly be printed on paper if so desired and there are a few pages in each volume, either blank or with photographs of various musicians, which can be inserted at will in any place for the correct ordering of left and right hand pages so that page turns can be avoided. The principle of avoiding page turns has been maintained in all volumes, but this edition is also designed with mobile electronic devices in mind such as tablets etc, using the environment and facilities of a score reading application, towards a paperless world, at least in music. The undulating rhythms and close harmonies produce a pleasing mood with a hint of a jazz feel. The music gives you a big hug. Here is a description of the work by the composer: In the summer of 2017 my wife and I moved to the Nevada Dam town of Boulder City. The town began as a construction camp in early 1930s for the workers of the Boulder Dam (later renamed the Hoover Dam). The dam is one of the worlds great construction projects of the 20th century and has over a million yearly visitors. My house is less than ten minutes away from the dam, and because the dam in one way or another affects everyone living in this unique Nevada town, my newest trombone quintet (composed in January 2018) is the best, well you get the picture. It is a high energy single movement work inspired by the Hoover Dam and Lake Mead. Ranges are fairly moderate with a high C# in the first trombone at the end. This is a fun romp for five dam fine trombonists. The 4 1/2 minute work is appropriate for advanced performers.

This piece was inspired by an actual 'passeggiata' in a small Tuscan town (Montespertoli) not far from Florence. There seemed to be no starting signal, yet suddenly the square was filled with people - excited children, teenagers in love for the first time, couples with strollers, serious adults discussing world affairs or the weather.
