Dance de Confusion Confluence is the name of a place in Lyon where 2 rivers flow together: The Saône flows into the - at least in German - female Rhone. In French, however, it flows into DEN Rhone - Le Rhône. This confuses the composer: How do rivers get their gender, are they sometimes male, sometimes female? Is it because of their character, because of the landscape that they flow through? By their water, even by their fish? On the people on their shores? A real confusion ensues. In the subsequent thoughts about music, the composer discovers certain analogies and asks himself the question: does gender-typical music actually exist? Or instruments? Typically male harmonies or rhythms? Or clearly female melodies and the way to interpret? The 3-movement composition is dedicated to this question and meanders like a dance in the bed of the converging streams. Colorful modal harmonies form the bed for wide arcs of melody. A varied, recurring theme sets the direction and creates a bubbling, dancing pull in the direction of the mouth: dancing finale! 1st movement: Deux Characters In the first movement (Andante) the roles are distributed - the Sâone and the Rhône get their performers. A first glance at the ensemble reveals a tendency: woodwinds take on the female lead, the male brass the counterpart. The two drummers each support one of the two poles in solidarity. The assignment may be obvious, but strong doubts remain in the final chord of the first movement. 2. Dialogues: In smaller and larger dialogues, there is a lively exchange and the properties are worked out and further developed. But it is also increasingly being copied and imitated, even maliciously agitated and aped. You try to convince each other, interrupt each other, both sides increasingly flare up, it gets louder and more hectic, louder and louder, too loud, until communication stops: in the end, you just yell at each other! 3. Dance de Confusion The resulting confusion finds a conciliatory end in the third movement of the composition: Let's dance! Published by Ian Christensen (A0.740138). A symphonic band arrangement of Holst's underperformed Japanese Suite. Japanese Suite was created through a collaboration with Gustav Holst and Japanese choreographer Michio Ito using Japanese tunes that Ito had whistled to Holst, besides the Dance of the Marionette, which was created by Holst. The piece has five distinct movements, with the prelude later serving as an interlude. This arrangement calls for a band of one piccolo, two flutes, one oboe, one bassoon, one Bb clarinets, one bass clarinet, one contrabass clarinet, one soprano saxophone, two alto saxophones, one tenor saxophone, one baritone saxophone, three trumpets, two horns, three trombones, one bass trombone, two baritones, one tuba and six percussionists (bass drum, crash cymbals, crotales, glockenspiel, marimba, sleighbells, snare drum, suspended cymbal, tam-tam, timpani, toms, triangle, vibraphone, wind chimes and xylophone).

There are moments of intricate and independent percussion lines that swell into the full band acting as percussion with short, crisp notes on their instruments as well as moments of dark wind chords. Published by C.M.Brandon (A0.1225338). A three movement suite which highlights the versatility of the clarinet. In the Tradition – An enjoyable piece written in the “textbook†Sonata form. One will be able to find an Introduction, Primary Theme, Transition, Secondary theme, Closing Theme, Development, and the Recapitulation. The classical styling showcases the clarinet’s versatility, range, and colors. In the Tinnabular – This melancholy piece explores the minimalist style of composition invented by Arvo Pärt called tintinnabuli. The two voice types characterized in this method (‘tintinnabular’ arpeggiating voice/the stepwise diatonic voice) are found in the piano while the clarinet adds a melody. Both of these voices expand, note by note, over time. In the Time of Rag – A lively and entertaining piece in the ‘ragtime’ style. Performers are encouraged to improvise, as was customary for these pieces. The drum set is not necessary but does add a great dimension to the music. From my research, I believe the style of drumming needed is “2nd line drummingâ€. The high hat and snare notation is meant to simulate the beats using brushes, rather than sticks, on the snare while maintaining the march rhythms. Washboards, tambourines, and the like could be incorporated at the discretion of the percussionist. Dynamic levels of the drums should not overtake the clarinet and piano but enhance the overall performance.

The March begins with a 5 measure opener followed by the main theme until a middle section begins with on beat eighth notes for the harmony.
