Capricious FantasyAs per the request of pianist Michael Tsalka, this flowing, expressive and lyrical piece is based on motives from the music of Classical Bohemian composer Johann Baptist Wanhal. Motives from his Capriccio No. 3, for piano, are used as fundamental building blocks, but the style of their expression and development is radically different. Because motives from different sections or movements of Wanhal’s piece all appear in this single movement, the character and expression here is more changeable, less stable and some might even say more romantic than Wanhal’s capriccio. Technically, this piece borrows ideas of repetition and continuous flow from recent minimalist music, but the effect is more lyrical, flexible and dramatic than classic minimalism. It begins with the repetition of four chords that were derived from notes used in one of Wanhal’s melodic motives. New melodies based on that motive then enter with different phrase lengths, creating a gentle dialogue of independent voices. Eventually, a faster idea from the same capriccio is introduced, but it is first played slowly and freely before its tempo increases. The entire piece then continues unfolding as a freely flowing dialogue of moods, tempos and characters based on these three simple ideas and it culminates with fast notes and strong declarations before subsiding into a gentle ending that includes all three motives.Performance duration ca. 6 minutes.

These cuts strikingly document Wagner’s struggle with the final form of the work. For the first time in a single edition all of Wagner’s own suggestions for ossias are found; ossias which evolved from performances under his own direction. Egon Voss writes about this in his foreword to the vocal score: “Such ‘pointers’, as you might say, were current practice in the 19th century which Wagner, as the example shows, did not evade. He was enough of a practical man of the theatre to know that a badly sung top note is worse than doing without it. Wagner even tolerated the transposition of lengthier passages because he was less concerned with the letter of the score than with theatrical effectiveness. [...] The present vocal score goes beyond the Complete Edition [...] in that the ossias mentioned above are indicated in the vocal part itself, in small notes. They concern principally the role of Tristan, but also those of Isolde, Brangäne and Kurwenal. They rest in part on the Tristan edition within the Complete Edition but for the greater part go back to a source which could not be consulted for the Complete Edition because it was not yet accessible. This relates to a vocal score from the estate of the composer Peter Cornelius who was engaged by Wagner as repetiteur at the Vienna rehearsals in 1861-63. That the ossia bars go back to Wagner can be taken as certain, since in some places they are notated in his own hand.†(Egon Voss, quoted from the foreword to the vocal score) The transpositions mentioned by Egon Voss—two by Hans von Bülow for the revival of the work which he conducted in Munich in 1869 and the third suggested by Wagner himself in 1861—are printed in the appendix to the vocal score. The ossias, transpositions, and cuts are available for practical use in the theatre and in rehearsal. The cuts are also incorporated into the orchestral materials for Tristan und Isolde. This is also the case with ossias which affect the orchestral parts.2013 marks Wagner’s bicentenary, making the year largely focused on his music, particularly the dramatic works. The harmony of the right-hand arpeggio changes slowly and subtly as the melody floats above. Some high ledger lines, with note above three lines alphabetically marked for ease of reading. Chromatic harmony with mixed accidentals in right hand. A joy to play, and very pleasing to the listener, I think, anyway... if I don't believe in my music, how can I expect players and teachers to do the same! Lasts about a minute and 45 secs. Alex locks in with some mighty power chords, jangly arpeggios and an absolutely diabolical solo. Utilizing a wah pedal and some tastily placed feedback he unleashes a beast of a solo, with some super fast shredding in between some truly tasty blues-inflected licks (both hallmarks of his early soloing style). The slap back delay effect used in several sections must be set to match the time of two eighth notes (or one quarter note) so be careful with that. See and hear this! He added poems and revised others for each succeeding edition. Thus, the first edition (1819) was a small book with only 12 poems and the last, often refered to as the Deathbed Edition (1892), contained over 400. Some of these he wrote in “clusters†of related poems. Such is the case with the Calamus cluster. The title was chosen to alert the reader that these were poems about what he called “the love of comrades,†“manly love†or with the code word, “adhesiveness.†The concept of homosexuality, as we know it today, was very different in Whitman’s time, but violently socially taboo. Acorus calamus is a reed-like species of marsh grass. In Poetry and Prose, Whitman wrote that it s a … very large and aromatic grass, or root, spears three feet high—often called 'sweet flag'—grows all over the Northern and Middle States.†The phallic plant has always been a symbol of love and associated with the Greek myth of Kalamos, son of the river god who loved the youth Karpos. When Karpos died in a swimming accident, Kalamos transformed himself into a reed so he could always be near the spot where his beloved died, and the rustling of the reeds in the winds sounds like moans of mourning. The Calamus cluster, 39 poems in all, recount the story of a manly love found and lost from the perspective of some time later. They are bittersweet memories. I chose four poems for my own cluster. They represent the four stages of such a relationship: initial attraction, first coy interactions, full-blossomed love, and the bitterness of it’s ending. It is possible that these events actually happened or that they all occurred in the poets mind without ever revealing his thoughts to the intended. Some musical devices, such as the rustling of the leaves in the third song and the constant use of seconds as two people who are close but not yet together in the second one, are obvious. But, other than some indications of tempo, I hesitate to give out remarks about how to perform the songs, or even metronome markings, that might give the singer a preconceived notion. This situation has happened to everyone. So, I say to the singer: revive the memories of a similar event in your life: a particularly heartbreaking one is best. Bring the telling of that memory to the vivid present, and tell us that story as if it ending some time ago but the hurt remains strong, If, by some chance, the singer has not had this experience, he should wait to sing this cycle until he has.
