It’s our tradition that the last stanza of a hymn is sung in unison, so that I as the organist can change the harmonization and keep things interesting. Sometimes I know ahead of time what I’m going to do, and sometimes I make it up on the spot.On this particular morning I planned on being spontaneous. (Can spontaneity be planned?) When we got to the final stanza, I threw on the 16′ pedal reed and went to town.I don’t know if this is the case for all musicians, but while I’m playing my brain is working on several different levels. Most of these are involved in actually playing the music, but there’s also a running commentary on how things are going. This commentary is usually really boring: It’s going okay. It’s going okay. It’s going okay. Sometimes the messages are more interesting: Uh-oh. She just dropped her mute. I missed that chord; remember to circle it when we’re done. My page turner appears to be on fire.So: We’re in the final stanza of Jesus Shall Reign Where’er the Sun. Big, majestic hymn. Over a hundred congregants and choir members are enthusiastically singing in unison. I’m leading them from the organ with an improvised accompaniment that involves all of my limbs. It’s fair to say that I was concentrating hard.Suddenly the commentary part of my brain breaks in: Dude, your feet are totally playing Canon in D. Cool!Canon in D is the most famous work of Johann Pachelbel, a German composer who preceded Bach by a few decades. It’s overused at weddings, but it’s actually a really good piece of music. The original is for three violins and a basso continuo part, which would usually have been played by harpsichord and cello. In this case, the basso continuo plays the same eight measures again and again throughout the piece. This technique of repetition is called a ground bass. While that’s going on, the violins play several different themes on top of it.When I was improvising that Sunday, my feet had accidentally wandered into that ground bass part, which happened to fit nicely with the melody we were singing. During the sermon (sorry Pastor!) I started going through the violin themes in my head, seeing if any of them could also match up with the hymn tune. Some of them worked and some didn’t. I decided to write a sort of theme and variations, where the hymn tune appears in various forms. Sometimes it’s played along with one of the violin themes, and sometimes a violin theme serves as an interlude on its own. And except for one passage, the left hand is always playing some version of the basso continuo theme. I also changed the meter from 4/4 to 3/4 to make it more interesting. It culminates in a climax worthy of a king. I hope you enjoy it.

This is my first original album, a soft piano album about the day of the week ‘Sunday’. Initially, I didn’t set out to write a full album, the piece ‘Sunrise’ ignited that idea after I wrote it. After writing that piece I decided to write more tracks and compile an album. I decided to write a total of 10 tracks, each reflecting on a different time during Sunday. The album begins with the sunrise which is the first track. You’ll notice that the whole album is in order from the beginning to the end of the day. After the sunrise it is morning and the frost begins to melt from the suns warmth in the air. Moving toward midday some light rain passes through followed by a thunderstorm then comes the afternoon, and the warm air. Finally, the day comes to an end as the sun sets on the horizon and then the stars revel themselves in the night sky.This album is meant to be a relaxing, peaceful album to listen to while you read, study, work, drive, or anything else you might do with music on in the background. I really enjoyed writing each track and it was a lot of fun to write a different piece about each part of Sunday. I hope that you enjoy listening to or learning these pieces and that they bring a little more peacefulness into your life.

The second last piece of this album ‘Sunset’ is a depiction of the sun setting after a relaxed Sunday. The piece open with long-sustained chords in both hand which are reflective of the beauty, calmness, and peacefulness of the sun sitting among the landscape in the distance. This is emphasised by the slow tempo and the soft dynamics of the composition.As the piece moves away from the sustained chords, the an arpeggiated pattern is introduced in the left hand which adds some rhythm. The melody floats above this accompaniment and is unhurried and gentle. In the final section of ‘Sunset’ the right hand joins the left with it’s flowing arpeggiated motion to continue the calm and peaceful atmosphere.I don’t watch the sunset often so writing this piece allowed me to think about the feelings I have when I sit there and simply appreciate the beauty of this event that happens every day, something that goes largely unnoticed in our busy lives.

Written by Arthur Kent and Sylvia Dee, Bring Me Sunshine was first recorded by The Mills Brothers in 1968 for their album My Shy Violet. In the UK, the song is associated with the comedy duo Eric Morecambe & Ernie Wise, after it was used in the second series of their BBC show as their signature tune from 1969. This arrangement was requested by Lofthouse 2000 Brass Band, to bring some sunshine to his band whilst everyone was in lockdown during the 2019/2020 Coronavirus Pandemic. Southwest Sunrise Trumpet Solo Eddie Lewis and Alex Lewis MTR P111 4137 Southwest Sunrise is a trumpet solo for beginner trumpet students that has a more complicated piano part. I often get requests for music for students of different skill levels. And in fact, that’s what of my strengths as a writer, is that I can blend parts across skill levels that way. In this case, Alex and I were striving for something that would be interesting for the pianist, but not overly challenging for the beginner trumpet student. The Process The inspiration for this piece came to me on a morning walk in Chandler, Arizona. Chandler is a suburb of Phoenix. I was walking east, into the rising sun. It was a very simple melody. It was a very simple blues melody that I immediately recognized as something that would work in our series for beginner trumpet students. This was during a time when my son, Alex, and I were already collaborating on some other projects. For this piece, I gave Alex the melody and gave him a general description of what I was hearing. Then I gave him his space to create what sounded good to him. The next stage was me editing some of his creativity. At this point we went back and forth on a few issues until we agreed on the final results. SKILL LEVEL The skill level for Southwest Sunrise is Trumpet Pioneer (we don’t have skill levels for piano parts yet on this website). Trumpet Pioner is the first of seven levels in our system. These are absolute beginners who have only been playing the trumpet for a few months. Our Trumpet Pioneer level limits the range to C in the staff. We also limit rhythms to nothing smaller than quarter-notes, and key signatures are limited to one flat or sharp. Practice Recommendations While it is obvious and I don’t normally list it as a point in this practice recommendations, but the rhythms are very different between the trumpet part and the trumpet part. So it is even MORE important to spend time listening to the composition long before you begin practicing it. As I said, this is a good habit for working on all performance pieces. There is research that proves that students learn their music best when they recognize their mistakes soonest. When you listen to the music repeatedly before you practice, it goes a long way towards helping you recognize your mistakes. This is one of the most important reasons for listening, but there are others that I won’t go into here. Assuming the pianist is far more advanced than the trumpeter, the pianist should assume a patient, educational role.

Add in the quirky shops, the feral roosters roaming the streets, the beautiful city beaches, and the relaxed island attitude prevalent in the Keys, and you’ve got something truly special. I’ve been to Key West twice, and decided to write this piece to capture the indescribable aura this place emits. The unconventional instrumentation was chosen to represent a group of random people come together, yet thriving in perfect harmony. Key West Sunrise starts slow and atmospheric, watching the sun peak over the horizon. The horn, cello, and bassoon sustain long notes while the vibraphone and harp provide flourishes of activity, before rooster calls rudely interrupt. And then we’re off-the morning is in full force, with jazzy ostinatos in the vibe, glisses in the harps, and the main theme being passed around. It builds and builds, and ends on a strong note-but with the feeling that there’s more to come. Because in Key West, there always is. JL, August 2014.

Sunset: St. Louis for SSA choir and piano was written at the suggestion of a conductor I met at the 2013 American Choral Directors’ Association national conference in Dallas, TX. He lamented the lack of new music for SSA choir that kept the voices within a restricted range yet wasn’t simplistic, and also didn’t use a restricitve number of accompanying instruments; throughout the week his sentiment was echoed by countless other conductors who I had the pleasure of spending time with. At that point, I also had no music for treble/women’s choir in my catalog, so this piece is not only an attempt to fill in this hole in the repertoire, but also an attempt to fill in the hole in my own choral output. The piece opens with a short passage for solo piano evocative of late afternoon light on water which leads into the voices’ hazy entrance of close diatonic harmonies and loose, liquid rhythms. After this soft opening, the piano begins a gently undulating, water-like accompaniment that – like the Mississippi – flows by, bringing harmonic shifts and swells. The words Dream by the river captured my imagination, conjuring images of the city drifting to sleep as the sun sets, so I couldn’t resist making the single word Dream into a refrain, weaving it into the larger structure of the poem, which makes the piece not only a love song to the city, but also a lullaby. The vocal parts have a compressed range: Soprano 1 has a few unsustained Gs, and the Alto line never drops below B-flat. There are some minor challenges with rhythm and pitch (hemiolas, tuplets, and some harmonic cross-relations with the piano), but all are navigable. The piece was written and prepared for publication in a compositional frenzy between 1pm on March 30, 2013 and 7pm on March 31, 2013 in Montauk, NY.Duration: ca. 4 min. On April 8, 2024, I had the privilege to be able to view a solar eclipse in totality. I'd previously seen one at around 99% totality, but 100% is a completely different experience. I periodically glanced at the sun in my protective glasses, watching the disc shrink down to nothing, not expecting much other than the absence of a sun. But I looked away for a moment, and my son suddenly cried, It's there!I turned and gasped: the sky was a flat twilight blue, and a crisp brilliant ring glowed in the sky, safe to view with the naked eye. The world was still, strangely silent, alien and new. We all tried to grab as many pictures as we could. After a few minutes, the moon continued its arc across the sky, and the sun's glare abruptly reappeared, already blinding even as a sliver. I can still see that ring in my mind's eye, fiercely burning, as if someone had literally cut a circle out of the sky and exposed another universe behind it.In this piece I tried to capture the growing ominous wonder of an eclipse approaching totality. While the 2024 eclipse was not visible in Russia, the Russian word for sun, Ñолнце (solntse), has a lily-like fragility to it that the English equivalent does not. Various parts of the choir repeat the word throughout the piece, and the repeated ts and s sounds should create a percussive susurrance. Stagger breathing should be used throughout.Also repeated is the Russian word for moon, луна (luna). As the eclipse approaches that crystalline moment of totality, the moon becomes more and more prominent and the text more chantlike. The refrain, first sung by a solo bass at bar 7, and sung in variation by the other parts thereafter, is repeated in its original form once by the sopranos near the top of their range. This represents the sun in final desperate ecstasy, before it too collapses into the inevitability and madness of occultation.After an indefinite sudden pause, the shock of the moment, the choir reverently sings suscipe deprecationem nostram. Glorificamus te. As the moon frees the sun from its cold grip, the menace of the previous section threatens to return, but just as quickly fades, revealing once again Ñолнце в небе (the sun in the sky).

Known as the Sunrise because the rising opening theme of the first movement seems to depict the first appearance of the sun at dawn. Whether Haydn intended it or not, this movement has caught the imagination of many listeners as some of the earliest programme music (rather in the manner of Beethoven's Moonlight sonata for piano a few years later). The Adagio, Menuetto & Trio, and Finale follow a more traditional pattern but, as ever, Haydn's ingenuity produces small innovations such as the triplet semi quavers/ sixteenth notes which become sextuplets in the Adagio, the unusual contrasting Trio and the acceleration of the final section of the Finale.Players of Advanced intermediate standard and above will enjoy the challenge of this delightful Piece.

Bring Me Sunshine is a light-hearted, catchy song written in 1966 and was first recorded by The Mills Brothers and then Willie Nelson. In the UK it was popularised by the comedy duo Morecambe and Wise who used it as their theme song. Although the lyrics are in many ways light-hearted, the message is still very poignant - it's an encouragement to us all to bring more love and light (sunshine) into our world. Similar sentiments are found in other songs of the era such as What the world needs now, All you need is love and Here comes the sun.This arrangement would suit school and amateur choirs and is mostly in 2-parts with just some additional harmonies at the end, which are optional. The piano accompaniment includes the melody line but this can be omitted once the singers are confident. A separate vocal score is included for the singers. The change of key lifts the mood to a higher level, and throughout the singing style needs to be light, rhythmic and above all full of encouragement.
