This work is a representation of my experimentation with 20th-century harmonies and scales, as noted by Vincent Persichetti in his book Twentieth-Century Harmony. Through this process, I worked to combine aspects of these harmonic ideas with my own voice and focus on harmonic color and nature. Combining the harmonic tendencies of the 20th-century with my own harmonic language, and connecting them through digestible melodies led me to Resonance and Flow, a work that also capitalizes on the nature of the wind quintet's aural characteristics. The wind quintet can be equally homogenous or heterogeneous in timbre, and these can change based on combinations and roles of the instruments. In playing with all of these tools, Resonance and Flow is a representation of 20th-century music with a 21st-century attunement to the audience and their taste.

It is on Jacobâ??s Djesse vol. 4 album, released on February 29, 2024. This transcription was originally based on two back-to-back live performances at Union Chapel in London on Aug. 31, 2023, and was completed before the album version was released. The videos were not an official release, but the performances were the first time the three of them had ever performed it as a trio in front of an audience. There were slight discrepancies between the two performances, but I chose what was most consistent with the resulting pattern and progression of the album version.Despite the harmonic complexity of parts of the song, learn the easy and repeatable chord shapes that Jacob actually uses to make this song easier to play that you think. This transcription is intended as a chordal and rhythmic guide to the song, making it more accessible, no matter what your level of playing is. Since it is based on a live performance, and because Jacob doesn't play anything exactly the same way twice, this is not a note-for-note fingerstyle arrangement. This frees you up to adapt it to your level of playing, whether you're a strummer or fingerpicker.As a professional fingerstyle guitarist himself, arranger and transcriber, Justin Roth, has been teaching and transcribing Jacob Collier's guitar arrangements with precision and attention to detail unlike no other to date. Sonata for Harp, Op. 17 was composed out of the desire to write for an instrument I had not previously written for at the time. The themes used throughout the entire sonata are revolved around the limitations of the harp pedals.The first movement, in Bb major, utilizes Sonata-Allegro form and revolves around the dialogue of two themes and constant motion, which are developed further in the development section. Structurally and tonally, the principles of this form, as well as the piece overall, is applied is the same as in a Mozart piece.The second movement, in E major, which is the tritone to Bb, is in ternary form and opens with a melody that represents prayer. Following this prayer is a chorale that gradually becomes more grandiose in nature. A motive of loud planing chords is the answer to this prayer, which is followed by the softer motive that transitions into the next section. The theme is a simple melody containing planing fifths in the left hand, which is accompanied by ornamentation in the right hand. In the final section, a combination of themes, including the initial prayer motive and chorale motive, return and closes the movement.The third movement, in Bb major, is also in ternary form with rondo-esque tendencies. One central theme culminates the final movement of this sonata, which is brought through different tonal centers. Furthermore, it is presented in the form of a waltz in the middle section of the piece. While joyful in nature, there are humorous moments such as terrace dynamics implanted to surprise and keep the listener engaged throughout the movement.I. Allegro giojosoII. Adagio religiosoIII. The first one (Strange preludes and double canon) was written in 1992, this one in 2003 and there are numerous sketches (even complete movements) for a third one.The title Oil spots on the water doesn't have much with ecological issues, but rather with those abstract, colourful, poly-semantic shapes of small oil spots on asphalt, especially when it rains.The Wind Quintet Ölflecke auf dem Wasser was selected in 2003 in a shortlist of 31 among 270 compositions for the project Neue Kammermusik für Musikschulen (New chamber music for music schools) by the Verband deutscher Musikschulen (Association of German Schools of Music) in Bonn, Germany.In October 2004 this piece, together with two other pieces by the same composer, received first prize at the Bremer Komponistenwettweberb organised by the Council of the Music (Landsmusikrat) in Bremen, Germany.Ölflecke auf dem Wasser was first performed on 10th July 2004 at the Castle Sonderhausen in Germany by the Wind Quintet of the Music School Carl Schroeder of Sonderhausen: Eva-Maria Albrecht (flute), Malte Schneegaß (oboe), Antje Eckstein (clarinet) Julia Wallis (bassoon), Manuela Hirsch (horn), Stephan Uhl (conductor); in the cycle Neue Musik in alten Residenzen (New Music in old residencies) of the Council of the Music Thüringen.After the premiere, Stephan Uhl published an article about the piece: Juan MarÃa Solares 'Ölflecke auf dem Wasser' (2003) für Bläserquintett. Anregungen zur Praxisarbeit zwischen Interpretation und Improvisation (Oil spots on the water (2003) by Juan MarÃa Solare: Ideas about rehearsal practice between performance and improvisation). This article was published in November 2004 in the book Ensembleleitung Neue Kammermusik (Dokumentation und Arbeitshilfe des Modellprojekts), edited by the VdM (Verband deutscher Musikschulen - Association of German Music Schools), Bonn, ISBN 3-925574-59-X, pages 82-86.In March 2005 Oil spots on the water was chosen in the shortlist at the Piece of the Year Competition organised by Alan Taylor and the London Chamber Group. In this context it was performed on 10th July 2005 at a venue unknown to the composer.

This mood seems to me folded into the Brazilian Bossa Nova, and the Brazilians? term ?saudade?; in this piece I offer up my tribute to one of my favourite composers, Radamés Gnattali (1906-1988), who wrote for every musical situation in his era in Brazil ? from the concert stage to the back alley, and everything in between. Lua para Epilogo de Verão, is dedicated to the Brazilian guitarist Fabio Zanon, who is both a great friend and a tremendous inspiration.This étude tackles solid chords and contrary motion in the left hand, and, like all the études in this collection, voice separation and phrasing. In measure 24 the guitarist must execute a diagonal barré, where the first finger covers position IV at the first string, and position V at the fifth string, hence the V/IV indication after the barré symbol. The practicalities of navigating through the different chord shapes and rhythms in the piece mean that not all notes can be held for their full, written value. Such discrepancies between the text and the playing are common in this style of music.Les nuits du mois d?août peuvent contenir une douce mélancolie, à savoir que la fin de l?été approche. It has always been a favorite among instrumental players and often used in recitals or concert encores. This arrangement by Colin Kirkpatrick is ideal for the intermediate bassoon player. It is in concert C and range is from G on the lowest line of the bass clef to the E just above the staff. In 1853, the well-known French composer Charles Gounod added his own melody over a rippling keyboard accompaniment which was a slightly adapted version of the Prelude No. 1 in C major, BWV846, from Book I of J. S. Bach's The Well-Tempered Clavier, published in 1722. The title of the “combined†piece was Méditation sur le Premier Prélude de Piano de S. Bach. Gounod’s original arrangement transposed Bach’s keyboard part from C major into F major and it was scored for violin (or cello), organ and piano. In 1859, the French music publishing company Jacques-Léopold Heugel brought out a vocal version based on the familiar Latin text. Ave Maria (Hail Mary) is a traditional Catholic prayer addressed to the Virgin Mary.The version of Bach's prelude which Gounod used included the so-called Schwencke measure (m. 27 in this arrangement), a measure (bar) allegedly added by the German composer and pianist Christian Friedrich Gottlieb Schwencke (1767-1822) in an attempt to correct what was considered a harmonic weakness in the original. Whether there actually was a “harmonic weakness†(or possibly an error in the manuscript) remains a matter of conjecture but the fact remains that the most familiar-sounding version of this piece, recorded countless times by both singers and instrumentalists includes this Schwencke measure. It is therefore included in this arrangement.Some published arrangements show minor inconsistencies in the rhythm of the melody. This arrangement uses the familiar rhythm of the Ave Maria version as it appeared in the 1859 edition.
