The first theme starts with the G minor scale that reaches to a perfect fifth above the tonic before descending to the home key. The second theme is related to the first one, but it begins with the perfect-fifth upward movement followed by its stepwise descent, and is written in a fugal manner. The latter half of the work is a toccata written in the style of the late 19th century and early 20th century French organ music; in that section, the pedal division states the main theme against the rapid 16th notes on the manuals in the key of G Major. Technical demands include a good sense of rhythm, a steady beat and a slight legato touch. The Scherzo explores a variety of sections that have their own character. The first section is written in a North German toccata style where the opening measures are treated in a canonic manner and played in a series of thirds and sixths against the main theme stated in the pedal division; this compositional approach is somewhat reminiscent of the organ compositions of Dietrich Buxtehude (Prelude and Fugue in G Minor BUXWV 149). The second section is contrapuntal in nature and depicts a humorous moment; that moment may depict a comedy show or a circus event at a fair. Following that section is the recurrence of the main theme of the first movement. The fourth section is quiet in sound intensity and is the most chromatically oriented than other parts. Following that is a fugue, derived from the main theme of the first movement, and a transitional passage leading back to the recurring main theme. The work concludes triumphantly in the key of G Major. The Scherzo requires attention to articulation, phrasing and timing. This work is suitable for educational and recital uses: it introduces organ students to major works of Buxtehude and Johann S. Bach and many more composers; organists of various expertise may play the work to lighten up the audience's mood after listening to more difficult organ works. The work was written in memory of American composer Daniel Pinkham (1923-2006) – a composerwhose music, advocacy, and personal support meant a great deal to me over the years I knew him.Throughout his distinguished career as a composer, keyboard performer (on harpsichord and organ),teacher, and conductor, Dan Pinkham served as an inspiration for countless American composers andmusicians.I had planned to write a solo flute sonata for a few years and made many sketches towards such a work. Inearly 2007, reflecting on Dan’s passing in December 2006, I threw out everything I already had and begananew, conceiving the work both as a tribute to Dan and a piece for his close friend and frequentcollaborator Fenwick Smith.The five movements of the work each explore ongoing transformation of their opening materials. Thoughthere are elegiac moments in the work, the tone throughout is zestfully celebratory, with touches of humor,representing Pinkham’s irrepressible and memorable wit.The first movement, Caprice, flies through a series of arpeggio figurations in changing modes (often adifferent mode “going up†from “coming downâ€).The second movement, Folk Arabesques, is based on a Kentucky folk ballad, “John Riley.†The unusual leapsin the original melody and its modal shifts are explored in the surrounding commentaries, which takecombine bits of the folk ballad with arabesque figurations.The third movement, March, leaps through the total chromatic spectrum. Though the march is a form oftenignored by American composers, Pinkham often employed such sections and rhythms in his own music.The fourth movement, Aria and Interludes, uses a common Pinkham form—where the basic musicaldialogue (in this case a straightforward ‘aria’ melody in G minor) is interrupted by “interludes†ofcontrasting nature. In the case of this movement, it is gradually revealed that the interludes are alteredversions of the aria material.The fifth and final movement, Hootenanny at the Gates of Heaven, is a joyous romp, combining together boththe chromatic/modal shifts of the earlier movements with pentatonic figurations and melodies in the spiritof American folk fiddling.

Piano sonata in Neoclassical style, developing the themes briefly tried out by Beethoven in the slow introduction to the Finale of his Sonata No. 29 op. 106 (1818). This first movement (Allegro moderato) utilizes the first two of those melodic and textural scraps as the two themes of a sonata form in a mostly delicate, fantasia-like manner, with time signature ambiguity and alternance. The second movement (Allegro) utilizes the next two of those melodic and textural scraps as the two themes of an agitated 'scherzo' in G sharp minor, with allusions to Bach's Prelude in C minor from the second book of 'The Well-Tempered Clavier' and to Beethoven's Bagatelle in G minor, op. 126 no. 2. The Finale (Largo - Allegro ma non troppo) utilizes first the searching sections of that Introduction, as an enigmatic preparation of the big surprise in the Finale proper: a set of nine, mostly powerful variations on a tone row, yet treated not entirely with the twelve-tone technique, but in extended tonality context. Variations 2-5 allude to motifs from the themes of the previous movements. The mp3 is a self-made recording of the first movement using a Graf 1826 fortepiano sampled by Modartt's Pianoteq. The Six Trio Sonatas, BWV 525-530 were composed about 1727 during Bach’s period in Leipzig. They were not composed for organ, but (according to Forkel, Bach’s first biographer whose information came from Bach’s son Carl Philip Emmanuel Bach) for the pedal harpsichord as means of improiving the pedal technique of his son Wilhelm Friedemann Bach. This instrument, which requires a great deal of precision in performance, contains a normal harpsichord with two manuals attached to a pedal board which activates another harpsichord which is lower to the ground. Many of the movements in these Italian sonatas were used in other settings, in Bach’s Cantatas and in other instrumental works.Bach always tuned his own keyboards and confided his tuning system to his student Johann Kimberger (1721-1788) who used this information to devise several tuning schemes to create a well-tempered system according to Bach’s ideas. The main principal that Bach gave Kimberger was that all thirds should be tuned slightly sharp (...alle grossen Terzen scharf). The saxophone is an ideal instrument to experiment with this sort of tuning, given the possibilities for adjustment in the embouchure. Thierry Pélicant was born in 1957 at Sainte-Adresse, France. After studying the organ and the horn, his meeting with Jean-Claude Hartemann, the Musical Director of the Opéra Comique in Paris lead him to decide to explore conducting. He was the student of Haremann for fifteen years. He is the Musical Director of the André Messager Orchestre and has also directed the Orchestre Philharmonique de l’Oise since 1980, one of the oldest French orchestras, since it was founded in 1750. A passionate supporter of French music, Pélicant reconstructed the Messe solennelle of L.V.A Boïeldieu and Te Deum of 1792 by Philidor and premièred and recorded the Suite Parnassienne, Massenet’s last work. At the same time, he has also served the music of our time in premièring or recording the works of Dazzi, Marchand, Braconnier, Bénard, Drouin, Preschez, etc. As a composer, musical grammar and stylistic debates only interest him from afar. As a true gourmet (since cooking is another of his passions), he strives to write the music that pleases him, that would be enjoyable to play and which would be enjoyable to hear, hopefully with real pleasure and in which he tries to express the emotions and the pleasant or surprising states of being which, to hime, these works are tied. Through this process, he has created concertos (for oboe, for bassoon, for organ, for contrabass), Escales & paysages, ma monumental literary concerto for narrator, piano and orchestra, composed with his friend Dominique Preschez, Operas (Histoires comme ça, Ribouldingue, Élise et le fantôme) ; With the poet Luis Porquet, he wrote the song cycle Ombre légère (for soprano, harp and orchestre), Rhapsodie du Havre (for tenor and chamber orchestra, a commission from the Forum de Normandie to commemorate the 500 years of the founding of the city Le Havre), Et de toi, Bethleem, Christmas oratorio for baritone, chorus and orchestra and, finally, commissioned by the Orchestre de l’Oise in honor of the centennial of the First World War 14, fresque de la Grande Guerre, for the tenor Daniel Gà lvez-Vallejo, children’s chorus and orchestra. Andante)Elfrida Andrée (1841-1929) was a Swedish composer and an activist in the Swedish women's movement. She composed a number of chamber pieces which included string quartets, piano trios, violin and piano sonatas and was one of the first female organists officially appointed in Scandanavia. This particular piano trio from 1894 lends itself beautifully to the tambres found in a saxophone quartet and is sure to delight your audience.
