Among his works are numerous sonatas and concertos for flute which, probably inspired by his friendship with Quantz and his relationship with Frederick the Great, play a special role. These also include the present Sonata for flauto traverse and basso continuo in an arrangement for flute and guitar. In the guitar part, the adaptation of the sonata for this instrumentation focuses on the fully notated bass line. Other – guitar-specific – embellishments such as chord vines, imitations, etc. stand back in favour of the leading bass line.

As each one of Haydn's first keyboard sonatas, this particular Sonata Hob. XVI:8 is written in the light, galant style which was very popular in the mid-18th century. As the Classical sonata takes its origin in the Baroque suite, Haydn named his first sonatas Divertimenti or Partitas. It is believed that this Sonata Hob. XVI:8 was intended as a teaching piece for Haydn's students. There exists no autograph version of this sonata, rather, this sonata has survived in the form of manuscript copies made by pupils of Haydn or by his copyists.

The Six Trio Sonatas, BWV 525-530 were composed about 1727 during Bach’s period in Leipzig. They were not composed for organ, but (according to Forkel, Bach’s first biographer whose information came from Bach’s son Carl Philip Emmanuel Bach) for the pedal harpsichord as means of improiving the pedal technique of his son Wilhelm Friedemann Bach. This instrument, which requires a great deal of precision in performance, contains a normal harpsichord with two manuals attached to a pedal board which activates another harpsichord which is lower to the ground. Many of the movements in these Italian sonatas were used in other settings, in Bach’s Cantatas and in other instrumental works.Bach always tuned his own keyboards and confided his tuning system to his student Johann Kimberger (1721-1788) who used this information to devise several tuning schemes to create a well-tempered system according to Bach’s ideas. The main principal that Bach gave Kimberger was that all thirds should be tuned slightly sharp (...alle grossen Terzen scharf). The saxophone is an ideal instrument to experiment with this sort of tuning, given the possibilities for adjustment in the embouchure. SONATA No. 1 in A MAJOR SONATA No. 2 in E MINOR SONATA No. 3 in D MAJOR Written for 2 equal instruments these sonatas bring pleasure to players of intermediate standard and above whilst developing their independent playing skills. Each sonata has 4 movements slow and fast alternating in the same key. The six opus 8 sonatas were published in Paris in 1725 for ‘deux Flûtes-Transversiere sans Basse’. They were published ‘Avec Privilége du Roy.’ They were printed as a playing score preceeded by a title page which also gave details of where to obtain copies - L’Auter, Le Sr. Boivin & Le Sr. Le Clere. A copy of the Privilége du Roy. granted by King Louis on March 22nd 1724 was printed in full on the second page. It is highly likely that the sonatas would have been played by pairs of oboes or violins or possibly by bassoons or cellos according to the players available in the homes of the wealthy amateur players who could afford to buy music. The flute parts were printed in the soprano clef - with G on the bottom line. This would have been convenient for flute players who often also played bassoon when required and were often not keyboard players. This edition uses the modern bass clef and has a score plus separate parts to facilitate page turns. In editing the sonatas the presentation of the music has been modernised.

The sonata is the first of a set of six published in Paris in 1725 by L’Auteur & Boivin ‘Avec Privilege du Roy.1725.’ The title page described them as ‘SONATES EN TRIO pour Trois Flûtes Transversieres sans Basse Par MR BOISMORTIER. OEVRE SEPTIÈME.’ The publication consisted of a set of parts each with the title page followed by a copy of the Privilége granted by King Louis to Boismortier to print and sell his music. There are 5 movements, Gravement, Allemande Gayment, lentement, Gavotte en rondeau & Gayment. Players of Intermediate standard will enjoy playing this music. Obvious mistakes and omissions have been corrected without comment, trills have been added where there is for e.g. a sequence where only the first trill has been indicated or a similar passage has a trill in that part or another part. The more modern tr has been substituted for + and the mordant used on shorter notes retained. No dynamics were included in the original and none have been added. Players should feel free to add their own. For the arrangement some changes of register have been made to accommodate the ranges of the oboe and clarinet and additional slurs have been added (dashed lines). Players are free to retain the ‘feel’ of early eighteenth century style whilst playing modern instruments. The original publication used the, now defunct, soprano clef (with G on the bottom line of the stave) and this edition has been transcribed into the modern treble clef. In the eighteenth century it was quite usual for wind players to play several instruments. The use of the soprano clef would have made it easier to switch between flute and bassoon.

German • English • French.Born in Switzerland, Jean Xavier Lefèvre (1763-1829) was a sought-after clarinetist and one of the first clarinet professors at the Paris Conservatory. He is still known today for his Clarinet School (1802), which became a standard work in France and beyond. From this textbook comes the popular Sonata no. 1 with its catchy melody that encourages light playfulness. The piece is graded here as level 2. Also available: Sonata No. 2 g minor (SE 1039). Lefèvre wrote the piece originally for the then common C-Clarinet. For use in the classroom, this edition omits the transposition of the clarinet part into the B tuning. The accompanying bass voice of the original was transferred to the piano and supplemented with some suggestions on dynamics and articulation. (Minimal markings, no additional edits, i.e. no fingerings or bowing added)As per the tradition of the era, Bréval composed the Cello solo and the bass line, leaving the chord making up to the performer. This means that there is originally no piano accompaniment part by Bréval. (If you are familiar with any sonata by said composer, it is likley No. 1 in C major, as it appears in volume 4 of a popular method, which is supplied with a piano accompoaniment.) Even so, as many can attest, most sonatas of the Baroque/early Classical periods are beautiful performed with two cellos, or cello duet.In this edition, I have made the notation modern, the layout clean and clear, as well as providing the score of the two original parts and individual parts, labeled Cello 1 and Cello 2. (For those wishing for historical accuracy in part naming Cello 2 should more appropriately be labelled Basso.) I have elevated it to Cello 2 simply to encourage the performance of this excellent set of sonatas with two cellos. I believe they sound very good this way in spite of being traditionally expected to be performed with a chord making instrument like a keyboard in addition to the solo cello and bass instrument. Thus, making it a trio.The Table of contents is the following without being overly detailed (one of the preview pages will have incipits from all six sonatas as is the custom when printing a complete set of pieces in a single volume). Sonata No. 1 in C major Sonata No. 2 in F major Sonata No. 3 in G major Sonata No. 4 in Bb major Sonata No. 5 in A major Sonata No. 6 in D major Each sonata is two movements long. They all have first movements with the customary Sonata Allegro form. The seconds movements vary from RONDOs to Minuets to a set of variations.It is my sincere hope that more of these sonatas be learned and performed as they are not only great learning material, Bréval has crafted each one masterfully.
