The Six Trio Sonatas, BWV 525-530 were composed about 1727 during Bach’s period in Leipzig. They were not composed for organ, but (according to Forkel, Bach’s first biographer whose information came from Bach’s son Carl Philip Emmanuel Bach) for the pedal harpsichord as means of improiving the pedal technique of his son Wilhelm Friedemann Bach. This instrument, which requires a great deal of precision in performance, contains a normal harpsichord with two manuals attached to a pedal board which activates another harpsichord which is lower to the ground. Many of the movements in these Italian sonatas were used in other settings, in Bach’s Cantatas and in other instrumental works.Bach always tuned his own keyboards and confided his tuning system to his student Johann Kimberger (1721-1788) who used this information to devise several tuning schemes to create a well-tempered system according to Bach’s ideas. The main principal that Bach gave Kimberger was that all thirds should be tuned slightly sharp (...alle grossen Terzen scharf). The saxophone is an ideal instrument to experiment with this sort of tuning, given the possibilities for adjustment in the embouchure. The work is demanding in both technique and ensemble, but should be truly enjoyable to play and hear. The first movement, marked Moderato giocoso, is in sonata form in the key of G. The exposition is played muted, moving abruptly into a driving and open development, centered in D minor. The recap starts open, then re-employs the mute for a quiet close. The second movement is a beautiful, flowing song Lento con espressione, in D-flat major. It shifts to C# minor for a muted mid-section, then returns to the open horn in D-flat major to close. Â The third movement is marked Allegro gioioso. Â It is a driving 2/4, based around C Major, and briefly muted in the middle. Difficulty level for both instruments is medium-advanced. Total performance time is 15:30. Â Member, ASCAP.Â

No. 2 - D Major - Allegro comodo is in cut time. No. 3 - a minor - Allegro is in 6/8 time. No. 4 - g minor - Andante amoroso is in 4/4 time. These sonatas have few editorial markings, like Urtext Scarlatti manuscripts. Pedal should be used sparingly. Grace notes may be played either on the beat, Baroque style, or ahead of the beat, modern style.

Allegro moderato The composer and harpsichordist Anne-Louise Brillon de Jouy was born in Paris in 1744, and died in 1824 in Villers-sur-Mer in Normandie. She married Jacques Brillon de Jouy 22 years her senior,and had two daughters, Cunégonde and Aldegonde, Anne-Louise Brillon de Jouy had a salon in Passy whose guests included the violinist Jean-Pierre Pagin and cellist and composer Luigi Boccherini. Benjamin Franklin was also a frequent vistor and Madame Brillon has an extensive correspondence with him, including the period after his stay in Paris during the American Revolution .Many of her compositions were purchased in 1957 by the American Philosophical Society of Philadelphia, in honor of this friendship.In 2021, French Pianist Nicolas Horvath recorded a landmark CD for Grand Piano (GP872-73) of Brillon’s keyboard noatas with extensive notes by Aliette de Laleu, Deborah Hayes and Nicolas Horvath and Christine de Pas The keyboard sonatas published here are intended to document this reocrding.The twelve numbered sonatas, marked “Troisième Recueil de Sonates pour le pianoforte ou clavecin avec accompagnement d’un viiolon ad libitumâ€, are in the hand of a copyist and are contained in a bound volume labeled as her Troisième Recueil (‘Third Collection’) and dedicated to Mesdemoiselles Brillon. Evidently the composer at some point chose these 12 sonatas to be copied as a sampling of her work for her two daughters. The manuscript is in the collection of the American Philosopical Society in Philadelphia.

They were dedicated ‘a Son Altesse Serenissime Monsieigneur LE PRINCE DE CARIGNAN Par Mr. Blavet ordinaire de la musique de S. A. S.’ on the suitably elaborate title page.The sonata is written for two equal players and has 4 movements, Adagio, Allegro, Affetuoso & Allegro assai. Players of Intermediate ability and above will enjoy the interplay between the parts. The sonatas were printed using the soprano G clef which places the G on the bottom line of the treble staff, a practice which was not uncommon at the time. Blavet was not only the best flautist in France but also an extremely good bassoon player so would have found this clef easier to read from as he was not a keyboard player. This edition has been transcribed to the now established treble clef with G on the second line. Trills shown in the original as + are shown in this edition as tr. The breath marks in bar/measures 36, 39 & 41 in the final movement are Blavet’s. This is the first instance of his practice of marking the breaths which he developed in his opus 2 set of sonatas for flute and which has proved so useful to today’s performers of music of this period. Curiously Blavet used a flat (b) to cancel a sharp instead of a natural.

Each sonata has 4 movements slow and fast alternating in the same key. The six opus 8 sonatas were published in Paris in 1725 for ‘deux Flûtes-Transversiere sans Basse’. They were published ‘Avec Privilége du Roy.’ They were printed as a playing score preceeded by a title page which also gave details of where to obtain copies - L’Auter, Le Sr. Boivin & Le Sr. Le Clere. A copy of the Privilége du Roy. granted by King Louis on March 22nd 1724 was printed in full on the second page. It is highly likely that the sonatas would have been played by pairs of oboes or violins or possibly by bassoons or cellos according to the players available in the homes of the wealthy amateur players who could afford to buy music. The flute parts were printed in the soprano clef - with G on the bottom line. This would have been convenient for flute players who often also played bassoon when required and were often not keyboard players. This edition uses the modern bass clef and has a score plus separate parts to facilitate page turns. In editing the sonatas the presentation of the music has been modernised.

The first of six sonatas for four equal players published ‘avec Privilege du Roi’ in Paris in 1731. They were published as a set of parts for three transverse flutes or violins or other instruments ‘avec la Basse’. There are four movements, all in G minor, Adagio, Presto, Adagio & Allegro. The only dynamic marking is the ‘Piano’ marked at the end of the last movement. The ornaments - trills, mordants & grace notes - are all carefully included and further decoration of the parts was not expected in French music of this period unlike in Italian music. However, more experienced players should feel free to add a little more decoration at the final cadences of the slow movements. None of the movements have repeated sections and it is clear from the flow of the music that this is not an omission. Missing slurs have been added (dashed lines) along with a few phrasing suggestions. The arrangement includes a clarinet which would not have been available until over 30 years after publication but this arrangement is most likely to be played on modern instruments so it gives a modern woodwind quartet the opportunity to play music of this period in the appropriate style. Players of intermediate ability will enjoy this piece.

This Trio Sonata was composed around 1719 for 2 violins or flutes or oboes and cello or harpsichord. The four movements, Andante, Allegro, Largo and Allegro are typical of the other opus 2 sonatas and provide interesting parts for all three players. Players of intermediate standard and above will enjoy the musical challenge. All editing is clearly indicated using dashed lines and parentheses ( ). Some changes of register have been made- mostly moving the flute part up an octave to balance the oboe part and avoid middle C which would not have been available on most flutes of the period. Handel's dynamic markings are very sparse and I have refrained from adding more than a few very obvious ones as there are so many possibilities and it is so much more satisfying for players to decide for themselves.

La Sonate n° 6 Kharkiv pour guitare solo a été composée en 2021, à la fin du confinement lié au COVID-19. Ã? ce moment-là , ma famille et moi étions restés dans notre ville natale de Kharkiv (également connue sous le nom de Kharkov), en Ukraine, pendant près de deux ans. Nous considérions cette période de pandémie comme un désastre, mais nous avons réalisé plus tard que c'était en fait un moment plutôt heureux, car la guerre est arrivée dans notre pays quelques mois plus tard. Depuis 2022, une fraction considérable des 1,5 million de citoyens de Kharkiv ont quitté leur foyer, ceux qui sont restés vivent sous des attaques incessantes de missiles, et beaucoup ont été tués. Je voudrais dédier cette Sonate à la ville frontalière de Kharkiv et, surtout, à ses citoyens souffrant de la guerre.Pourtant, la musique de la Sonate n'a aucun programme spécifique. Ici, je donnerai un bref aperçu de ses principaux éléments de composition pour faciliter les interprétations futures.Les premier et quatrième mouvements de cette Sonate sont basés sur l'interaction entre le principe dodécaphonique et le centre tonal de sol majeur, naturel pour la guitare. En particulier, le premier mouvement est basé sur l'interaction de la triade de sol majeur Solâ??Siâ??Ré des cordes de guitare à vide 2â??3â??4, le motif ascendant 1 impliquant les notes Miâ??Fa#â??Laâ??Do# (à l'origine sur la première corde), et le motif descendant 2 utilisant les notes Miâ??Doâ??Sibâ??La (à l'origine sur la corde de basse 6). Ces éléments se complètent presque pour former douze tons (à l'exception du Fa manquant), et les motifs alternent avec des fragments ostinato où chaque note de la triade de sol majeur est déplacée pas à pas d'un demi-ton vers le haut ou vers le bas.Le deuxième mouvement est un Scherzo impliquant de nombreux demi-tons dans des accords accentués et des passages rapides, ainsi qu'un mouvement mélodique chromatique dans la voix de basse. Il est presque atonal dans certains fragments, mais a un centre tonal global de la mineur.Le troisième mouvement est un Adagio méditatif basé sur un thème composé dans l'échelle hexatonique Réâ??Miâ??Faâ??Sol#â??Laâ??Si et des accords ostinato impliquant les cordes de basse à vide Miâ??Laâ??Ré et le demi-ton Siâ??Do.Enfin, le quatrième mouvement est basé sur le thème dodécaphonique complet composé de deux phrases comprenant les motifs 1 et 2 du premier mouvement : Solâ??Faâ??Sibâ??Labâ??Doâ??Mibâ??Ré et Miâ??Siâ??Do#â??Laâ??Fa#. Ce thème est présenté dans ses formes prime et rétrograde. Il y a des dialogues entre la première corde, les basses et les cordes médianes à vide, similaires au premier mouvement. Ã? son apogée, le thème dodécaphonique est interprété en utilisant le mouvement parallèle de l'accord de sol majeur standard de la guitare avec les cordes médianes à vide sur douze positions.La Sonate a été créée en première et enregistrée (CD Naxos No. 8.574630) par le célèbre guitariste ukrainien Marko Topchii, qui a également vécu et étudié à Kharkiv. Je lui suis extrêmement reconnaissant pour l'interprétation brillante de cette pièce.Je suis très redevable envers Productions d'Oz d'avoir conservé mes notations originales là où celles-ci ne correspondent pas au style de l'éditeur.Sonata No. 6 Kharkiv for guitar solo was composed in 2021, in the end of the COVID-19 lockdown. At that time my family and I were staying in our home city of Kharkiv (also known as Kharkov), Ukraine for almost two years. We considered that pandemic period as a disaster, but later have realized that it actually was a rather happy time, because a war came to our homeland just a few months later. Since 2022 a considerable fraction of the 1.5 millions of Kharkiv citizens have left their homes, those who stayed have been living under ceaseless missile attacks, and many have been killed. I would like to dedicate this Sonata to the frontier city of Kharkiv and, most of all, to its citizens suffering from the war.Yet, the music of the Sonata does not have any specific program. Here I will give a brief overview of its main composition elements to facilitate future interpretations.The first and fourth movements of this Sonata are based on the interplay between the twelve-tone principle and the G-major tonal center, natural for the guitar. Namely, the first movement is based on the interaction of the G-major triad Gâ??Bâ??D of the open guitar strings 2â??3â??4, ascending motif 1 involving the notes Eâ??F#â??Aâ??C# (originally on the first string), and descending motif 2 using the notes E-â??Câ??Bbâ??A- (originally, on the bass string 6). These elements supplement each other to almost make up twelve tones (apart from the missing F), and the motifs alternate with ostinato fragments where each note in the G major triad is step-by-step moved by a semitone up or down.The second movement is a Scherzo involving numerous semitones in accented chords and fast passages, as well as chromatic melodic motion in the bass voice. It is almost atonal in some fragments, but has an overall tonal center of A-minor.The third movement is a meditative Adagio based on a theme composed within hexatonic scale Dâ??Eâ??Fâ??G#â??Aâ??B and ostinato chords involving open bass strings Eâ??Aâ??D and semitone Bâ??C.Finally, the fourth movement is based on the complete twelve-tone theme consisting of two phrases including motifs 1 and 2 from the first movement: Gâ??Fâ??Bbâ??Abâ??Câ??Ebâ??D and Eâ??Bâ??C#â??Aâ??F#. This theme is presented in its prime and retrograde forms. There are dialogues between the first string, basses and open middle strings, similar to the first movement. In the culmination, the twelve-tone theme is performed using the parallel motion of the standard guitar G-major chord with open middle strings across twelve positions.The Sonata was premiered and recorded (CD Naxos No. 8.574630) by the prominent Ukrainian guitarist Marko Topchii who has also lived and studied in Kharkiv. I am extremely grateful to him for the brilliant performance of this piece.I am greatly indebted to Productions dâ??Oz for keeping my original notations in places where these do not conform to the publisherâ??s style.
