Dating from this period is also his edition of Beethoven's 32 piano sonatas that first appeared from Breitkopf & Hartel in 1923. Frederic Lamond thus epitomizes Beethoven interpretation. Even today his name is still associated primarily with Beethoven. The present ,,Instructive Edition of Beethoven's 32 Piano Sonatas is a part of the ,,Breitkopf Originals series on the occasion of Beethoven's 250th Birthday in 2020. (Minimal markings, no additional edits, i.e. no fingerings or bowing added)As per the tradition of the era, Bréval composed the Cello solo and the bass line, leaving the chord making up to the performer. This means that there is originally no piano accompaniment part by Bréval. (If you are familiar with any sonata by said composer, it is likley No. 1 in C major, as it appears in volume 4 of a popular method, which is supplied with a piano accompoaniment.) Even so, as many can attest, most sonatas of the Baroque/early Classical periods are beautiful performed with two cellos, or cello duet.In this edition, I have made the notation modern, the layout clean and clear, as well as providing the score of the two original parts and individual parts, labeled Cello 1 and Cello 2. (For those wishing for historical accuracy in part naming Cello 2 should more appropriately be labelled Basso.) I have elevated it to Cello 2 simply to encourage the performance of this excellent set of sonatas with two cellos. I believe they sound very good this way in spite of being traditionally expected to be performed with a chord making instrument like a keyboard in addition to the solo cello and bass instrument. Thus, making it a trio.The Table of contents is the following without being overly detailed (one of the preview pages will have incipits from all six sonatas as is the custom when printing a complete set of pieces in a single volume). Sonata No. 1 in C major Sonata No. 2 in F major Sonata No. 3 in G major Sonata No. 4 in Bb major Sonata No. 5 in A major Sonata No. 6 in D major Each sonata is two movements long. They all have first movements with the customary Sonata Allegro form. The seconds movements vary from RONDOs to Minuets to a set of variations.It is my sincere hope that more of these sonatas be learned and performed as they are not only great learning material, Bréval has crafted each one masterfully.

A near contemporary and rival of Haydn, Leopold Hofmann was held in the highest regard in his native Vienna where he served as Kapellmeister at St Stephen's Cathedral, a position to which Mozart might have succeeded had he lived. Hofmann was a prolific composer of instrumental music and he wrote a good deal of chamber music although much of it has been lost. Hofmann also composed a substantial body of chamber music for strings and among the most interesting of these works are the Six Sonatas for Violin & Basso. The sonatas are as a whole more technically difficult than any of the composer's other chamber works with violin. In some respects, particularly in their extensive use of double-stopping and two-part textures in the violin part, they are more technically demanding than his violin concertos. There is no attempt, however, to involve the basso in the presentation of thematic material and in this respect the sonatas are quite unlike Hofmann's one extant Duo for Violin and Violoncello (Badley II.D2) in which the two parts are treated equally. In view of their technical difficulty and limited dissemination it is difficult to understand Hofmann's motivation for composing the sonatas. Their exploration of multiple-voicing, particularly in first and second movements, and the use of a Minuet with variations for five of the finales – all of which follow a similar pattern of technical exploitation – suggests that the sonatas may have been composed by Hofmann in the first instance as teaching pieces.

Minuetto e Trio The composer and harpsichordist Anne-Louise Brillon de Jouy was born in Paris in 1744, and died in 1824 in Villers-sur-Mer in Normandie. She married Jacques Brillon de Jouy 22 years her senior,and had two daughters, Cunégonde and Aldegonde, Anne-Louise Brillon de Jouy had a salon in Passy whose guests included the violinist Jean-Pierre Pagin and cellist and composer Luigi Boccherini. Benjamin Franklin was also a frequent vistor and Madame Brillon has an extensive correspondence with him, including the period after his stay in Paris during the American Revolution .Many of her compositions were purchased in 1957 by the American Philosophical Society of Philadelphia, in honor of this friendship.In 2021, French Pianist Nicolas Horvath recorded a landmark CD for Grand Piano (GP872-73) of Brillon’s keyboard noatas with extensive notes by Aliette de Laleu, Deborah Hayes and Nicolas Horvath and Christine de Pas The keyboard sonatas published here are intended to document this reocrding.The twelve numbered sonatas, marked “Troisième Recueil de Sonates pour le pianoforte ou clavecin avec accompagnement d’un viiolon ad libitumâ€, are in the hand of a copyist and are contained in a bound volume labeled as her Troisième Recueil (‘Third Collection’) and dedicated to Mesdemoiselles Brillon. Evidently the composer at some point chose these 12 sonatas to be copied as a sampling of her work for her two daughters. The manuscript is in the collection of the American Philosopical Society in Philadelphia.

Full scoreProgram note:In the late spring of 2024 I read a review in BBC Music Magazine of an ECM recording from 1994 of Keith Jarrett playing the CPE Bach Württemberg Sonatas. I am a long time fan of CPE Bach's music. But I have confess that the Württemberg Sonatas never did much for me. Maybe it's because all the previous albums of the work were recorded on the harpsichord, which I hate. But, when I heard Keith Jarrett do these sonatas on a Steinway grand, I was blown away!!! So blown away was I that I immediately wanted to do my own version of these great works by CPE. I am calling my work, after John Cage, Sonatas and Interludes. The four sonatas in this volume are a tantalising introduction to Artaria Editions' forthcoming publication of the complete keyboard sonatas of Domenico Cimarosa. (Sonata R20, R30, R25 and R27) The present edition attempts to present as accurately as possible the composer's intentions as transmitted in the Florentine MS with the exception of the grouping of the works into multi-movement cycles. Cimarosa's scant markings have been preserved throughout and, on occasion, applied to parallel passages. As in the original, the editor has placed the onus of responsibility for interpretation back on the performer although he has made occasional tempo suggestions where they are missing from the source. Obvious wrong notes have been corrected without comment; editorial emendations with no authority from the source are placed within brackets. Nick Rossi Sadly Nick Rossi died before this edition went to press. In the course of its preparation we discussed many issues relating to the genesis of the sonatas and the risk the editor takes in presenting the works to the public with so little help in the matter of interpretation. I have tried to incorporate all of Nick's final thoughts on the sonatas in the edition that follows. Allan Badley.

SONATA No. 1 in A MAJOR SONATA No. 2 in E MINOR SONATA No. 3 in D MAJOR Written for 2 equal instruments these sonatas bring pleasure to players of intermediate standard and above whilst developing their independent playing skills. Each sonata has 4 movements slow and fast alternating in the same key. The six opus 8 sonatas were published in Paris in 1725 for ‘deux Flûtes-Transversiere sans Basse’. They were published ‘Avec Privilége du Roy.’ They were printed as a playing score preceeded by a title page which also gave details of where to obtain copies - L’Auter, Le Sr. Boivin & Le Sr. Le Clere. A copy of the Privilége du Roy. granted by King Louis on March 22nd 1724 was printed in full on the second page. It is highly likely that the sonatas would have been played by pairs of oboes or violins or possibly by bassoons or cellos according to the players available in the homes of the wealthy amateur players who could afford to buy music. The flute parts were printed in the soprano clef - with G on the bottom line. This would have been convenient for flute players who often also played bassoon when required and were often not keyboard players. This edition uses the modern bass clef and has a score plus separate parts to facilitate page turns. In editing the sonatas the presentation of the music has been modernised.
