It is traditionally played on Holocaust Day, which is on the 28th day of the Hebrew month of Nissan in Israel, or January 27th in the rest of the world. Ani Maamin (I Believe): The words to this simple song are of the Jewish prayer I believe with perfect faith in the coming of the Messiah. The tune is attributed to Azriel David Festig, a leading Warsaw hazzan (cantor) who died in the Holocaust. The song was performed after the war by Rabbi Shaul Yedidia Eliezer Taub, the Admor (Rabbinical leader) of the Modzitz Hassidic sect, and has become the iconic song of the remembrance in the Hassidic community. This is one of four songs for Holocaust Remembrance Day that I have arranged for string quartet. It was written by Yiddish actor and composer Herman Yablokoff in 1922 in Grodno, Poland. Yablokoff later immigrated to America, where he produced a musical Papirossen that incorporated the song. It was later made famous by the Barry Sisters, a Yiddish popular music group. Donna Donna was written by Shalom Secunda, with words by Aaron Zeitlin for the Yiddish musical Esterke in 1940. Though the song originally related to the 600-year-old legend of a Polish king who married a Jewess, it quickly became associated with the Holocaust because of its haunting message. The song has entered the popular folk repertoire, with canonical renditions by Joan Baez, Theodore Bikel, and many others. Hatikva (the Hope) is Israel's national anthem. River of Remembrances is a 3 page intermediate level piece in the key of D major. It is the fifth and final piece from a set of pieces entitled Fiddle Tunes for Keys. This set of pieces was inspired by three separate encounters with fiddle music and beautiful scenery in the Shenandoah River Valley. There is narration in the recordings that tells the sweet story of how a young couple meet. River of Remembrances is in 3/4 time and carries throughout snatches of the previous 4 pieces woven within its own theme. This represents the couple 20 years later recounting the beginning of their special journey together. Other pieces available in this suite are: Grandpa's Boots, Meadow Song, A Jig For Grandma, and True Love's Promenade.

There is narration in the recordings that tells the sweet story of how a young couple meet. Meadow Song is a slow and gentle piece imitating a duet between two fiddles at the close of the day as the sun is setting. This piece has both hands notated in the treble clef and uses ledger lines. There is a melody in each hand to imitate the duet between the two fiddles. Housman‘s poems by George Butterworth, reorchestrated for Chamber Wind Ensemble, was commissioned by the Maidstone Wind Symphony for their recent Concert of Remembrance entitled A Time For Peace.Composed in 1911 for baritone voice and piano, this collection of short pieces utilises poems from A.E. Housman’s A Shropshire Lad published in 1896. The words have been woven into a delicate and moving composition, with the emotions contained in the text expertly drawn out through use of dynamics and phrasing.The delicate nature of the original pieces has been kept, with the voices of the wind orchestra giving a new timbral twist to the music. The reality of growing up in wartime is prevalent in the theme of the music and is captured well by Butterworth’s original. There has been a few orchestral settings of these songs, but this arrangement is to be the first for wind band.Premiered by Martin Hindmarsh and a selection of the Maidstone Wind Symphony players, the performance was delicate and true to the original essence of the piano accompaniment. These “Songs Without Words†spanned almost all his productive life as a composer (age 20-35 (2 years before his death.)) Mendelssohn discouraged his followers from attempting to find text to fit these pieces. He wanted the melodies to speak for themselves. Only a few of them were titled by Mendelssohn; most of the titles came from publishers of later editions. ♫The Classical Music for Tablet Series offers piano masterworks by classical composers formatted to be read on 10 inch tablets. I use an Amazon Kindle with Mobile Sheets Pro and an Air Turn blue tooth foot pedal to practice and perform piano music. Similar products available to provide other tablets the same functionality. ♫ The pieces in this series have not been arranged, but most have been edited slightly, and have been formatted to fit screen size. For example, in the tablet versions, first and second endings are often removed and the repeated measures and endings written into the music so the performer can avoid having to go back to previous pages.
