Jmsgu3 #913472. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.1325238). We Three Kings is a Christmas hymn John Henry Hopkins Jr. penned in 1857. It describes the journey of the Wise Men, also known as the Magi, to see the baby Jesus. The names of the kings passed down through tradition are Melchior, Caspar, and Balthazar. The number three in the title stems from the fact that there were three separate gifts given to Jesus: gold, frankincense, and myrrh. The hymn was composed for a Christmas pageant at the General Theological Seminary in New York City, where Hopkins taught music. It was the first Christmas carol originating from the United States to achieve widespread popularity. The song is known for its lilting tune in triple meter and its distinctive contribution to the Christmas carol repertoire, with a narrative-ballad style and a straightforward, child-friendly narrative. The hymn was also included in The Oxford Book of Carols and has been recorded by various musicians in different music genres, including jazz, rock, and reggae.

O Come All Ye Faithful for Piano Trio

Piano Trio - Level 1 - Digital Download SKU: A0.548647 Composed by Wade. Arranged by James M. Guthrie, ASCAP. Christmas. 7 pages. Jmsgu3 #3407487. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.548647). O Come, All Ye Faithful O Come, All Ye Faithful arranged for piano trio ( piano, violin & cello) featuring a thought-provoking re-harmonization of the final verse. O Come, All Ye Faithful is an English translation of the Latin Christmas carol Adeste Fideles. No one knows exactly who wrote it. One theory holds that King John IV of Portugal (1604–1656) wrote it. Another view says John F. Wade or John Reading wrote it. Nowadays, we usually attribute it to John Wade. It seems like Stonyhurst College in Lancashire owns the oldest manuscript. It is from the year 1751. Lyrics Frederick Oakeley, a Catholic priest in 1841, wrote the English translation. This translation is probably the most common in English-speaking states. To begin with, the hymn had only four verses. Later, the verses grew to eight. Music directors often cut various verses because otherwise, the song goes too long. Some believe that St. Bonaventure wrote the first Latin lyrics. Others hold that King John IV of Portugal is responsible. Yet even others think the Cistercian monks wrote them. King John IV His subjects called King John IV of Portugal The Musician King. He became king in 1640. In addition to performing the duties of a king, he composed and wrote as a music journalist. King John built an extensive music library. Unfortunately, the massive earthquake in Lisbon ruined the library in 1755. In addition to making his library, the king started a Music School that produced many accomplished musicians. The king also worked diligently to get instrumental music approved by the Vatican for use in his churches. Aside from his authorship of Adeste Fideles, he is famous for another popular choral setting of the Crux Fidelis, a prevalent Lenten hymn. Performance in Context Verses are sometimes left out because all eight verses would take too long to perform. More to the point, though, some of the poems may be unsuitable for whatever church calendar they are intended. The eighth verse deals with the Epiphany, so it makes sense to sing this on Epiphany Sunday but not on other Sundays. Similarly, other poems are used for whether the event is Midnight Mass or regular daytime Mass. Â

String Trio Cello,Viola,Violin - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1193717 By Blake Shelton. By Ben Hayslip, Josh Thompson, and Matt Dragstrem. Arranged by Sarah Cellobat Chaffee. Country,Pop,Rock,Wedding. 13 pages. Sarah Cellobat Chaffee #793190. Published by Sarah Cellobat Chaffee (A0.1193717). *INSTRUMENTATION: VIOLIN, VIOLA, CELLO*Released in 2017 as the lead single from Blake Shelton's album Texoma Shore, I'll Name The Dogs is a fun, upbeat country-pop gem that has since brought joy to people everywhere -- enough that it landed the song at #1 on the Billboard Country Airplay charts! Lyrically, the song is an adorable story describing the singer's readiness to settle down and start a family with his girl, complete with all the ways he's ready to share their life adventure together (eg. you name the kids and I'll name the dogs). The song's theme of matrimonial bliss and its old-school country charm has made it a popular request for weddings and events, so you can't go wrong adding this one to your gig books! This Cellobat arrangement for your violin, viola, and cello string trio maintains the cheerful vibe, country feel, lush harmonies, and sing-along-able melodies of the original for a chart that's sure to get your audience dancing. Rated advanced-intermediate due to a number of syncopated and otherwise tricky rhythms throughout -- it might be good to look over this one for a moment, but it will be learnable for students and sightreadable for professionals.Sarah “Cellobat†Chaffee is an in-demand acoustic & electric cellist and string arranger. Piano Trio,String Ensemble - Level 1 - Digital Download SKU: A0.548730 Composed by Martin Luther. Arranged by James M. Guthrie, ASCAP. Easter,Instructional,Standards. Score and parts. 8 pages. Jmsgu3 #3412105. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.548730). Out of the Depths I Cry to You by Martin Luther. First verses feature modified counterpoint and harmony proceeding at quarter = 82. The final verse is reharmonized for maximum dramatic effect at a more contemplative tempo such as quarter = 64. Very powerful selection for Lent or Easter. Duration (3 verses) 3:05, 36 ms. Score: 4 pg. piano part 2 pg. violin part: 1 pg. cello part: 1 pg. Out of the Depths Aus tiefer Not schrei ich zu dir (From deep affliction I cry out to you), is, of course, a hymn composed by Martin Luther. Moreover, Luther also wrote the lyrics which are essentially a paraphrase of Psalm 130. First published in 1524, it is also one of eight songs in the original Lutheran hymnal. It appears likewise in many hymnals and in different translations. The lyrics furthermore stimulated compositions from the Renaissance to contemporary. Consequently, composers such as Johann Sebastian Bach built an entire chorale cantata on it. Other composers similarly contributed compositions, such as Felix Mendelssohn and Max Reger. Luther Background Martin Luther, (1483 –1546) was a German professor of theology, composer, priest, and moreover, an influential character in the Protestant Reformation. Luther had a momentous impact on church and society due to his contributions to the musical arts. He wanted to disseminate the gospel among mankind and with this intention thought that the best way to do that was through music. Influence It is important to realize that other musicians, and their descendants, were encouraged by Luther’s songs and wrote their own hymns. Luther, to be sure, had a thorough musical education. For example, he knew secular and sacred songs from an early age. He, in particular, played the lute well and sang in the monastery when he was a monk. That is to say, music was an essential part of his life. He in fact first began writing songs in 1523, sometimes writing the melody as well as the lyrics. Luther was certainly able to evaluate the composers of his time. He thought especially highly of Josquin des and Ludwig Senfl. He was also acquainted, with this in mind, with other composers and their works. Legacy The Lutheran musical ethos soon covered all of Germany and later significantly fashioned Protestant musical culture. Heinrich Schütz and Johann Sebastian Bach are the most compelling evidence of this Protestant musical culture. Additionally, as a point often overlooked, the pedal organ, first refined in northern Germany, became universally prevalent. As a matter of fact, Dieterich Buxtehude established a regular evening organ concert series in Lübeck. Another key point is that this concert series, in turn, spread North German Musical ideas worldwide. Luther was especially convinced that music is a beautiful and exclusive offering of the divine.

String Ensemble,String Trio Cello - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.552065 Composed by Johann Pachelbel. Arranged by James M. Guthrie. Baroque,Instructional,Standards,Wedding. Score and parts. 16 pages. Jmsgu3 #6105689. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.552065). Score: 9 pagesDuration: 2:40. The famous Pachelbel Canon arranged for Piano Trio. A great choice for weddings & receptions! Pachelbel's Canon Pachelbel's Canon is, in fact, the traditional title for a composition by the German composer Johann Pachelbel. Other names for the work include namely: Canon and Gigue for 3 violins and basso continuo, Canon and Gigue in D, and of course Canon in D. We do not know when or why in particular it was written. The oldest copy is surprisingly from the 19th century. It is important to realize that it was a common routine for organists to practice improvisation on the chord progression underlying the canon. Pachelbel originally scored the Canon notably for three violins and continuo. He also in fact paired the Canon with a gigue. The movements are homotonal, to clarify, both are in the key of D major. History In due time, Pachelbel's Canon went out of style and remained in virtual oblivion for centuries. The Jean-François Paillard chamber orchestra, however, recorded an arrangement of it in 1968. As a result, it gained approval. Many ensembles began likewise to record the piece in the 1970s and by the 1980s became ubiquitous as background music. From the 1970s to the early 2000s, pop songs correspondingly used elements of the piece. The chord progression, in particular, was used this way. Also, since the 1980s, it has been not only wildly popular for weddings, but also for funeral ceremonies in the USA and Europe. Pachelbel Background Johann Pachelbel (1653 –1706) was a German composer, as well as an organist. He was furthermore instrumental in bringing the south German organ school to its apex. He wrote a large body of music, both sacred and, equally important, secular. In particular, he uniquely helped develop the chorale prelude and fugue. For this, he has, in fact, earned a rightful place in the company of the most significant composers of the mid-Baroque period. Works Pachelbel's music was certainly popular. With this in mind, he also consequently had many pupils. His music expressly developed into a model for south German composers. Nowadays, Pachelbel is most famous, particularly for the Canon in D, as well as the F minor Chaconne, the Toccata in E minor, and of course the Hexachordum Apollinis, a set of variations for the keyboard. Influences Johann Jakob Froberger and Johann Caspar Kerll were south German composers who significantly influenced Pachelbel. Furthermore, he was especially influenced by Italians such as Frescobaldi and Poglietti. He frequently preferred an articulate, simple contrapuntal style that highlighted clarity. His music is markedly less extravagant and harmonically adventurous than that of Dieterich Buxtehude. However, as a point often overlooked, like Buxtehude, Pachelbel experimented with different instrumental combinations in his chamber music. Legacy All in all, Pachelbel was most famous as a composer for the keyboard. He composed over two hundred pieces specifically for the instrument. Pachelbel was also surprisingly a prolific composer of vocal music. All in all, about a hundred vocal works survive, including 40 or so large-scale works.

Piano,Viola,Violin - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1205111 Composed by Gilad Cohen. Chamber,Classical,Contemporary. 217 pages. Gilad Cohen #803298. Published by Gilad Cohen (A0.1205111). Written with the theme of family in mind, Moonrhymes is based on nursery rhymes from different cultures. The piece is comprised of three movements (, in addition to an introduction and a finale, all played without a break): each of them focuses on a traditional song from a different origin: the English-Irish “Danny Boy,†the Latin “A La Nanita Nana,†and the Israeli-Yiddish “Numi Numi.† While such tunes have been sung as lullabies for many years, their lyrics are often more bleak than what might seem appropriate for bedtime. My treatment of these melodies takes them thus to mysterious, reflective, and dark places, using folk elements from various cultures. Moonrhymes plays with the question of what rhyming could mean in instrumental music.  Literal rhymes feature similarities in sound between words: the endings of rhyming words usually sound identical, while the beginnings are different.  Likewise, the themes of the piece are very similar to the original tunes, but each carries a significant musical difference in pitch, rhythm etc.  Additionally, many moments in the piece “rhyme†with one another:  Accompaniment figurations reoccur while supporting different tunes (such as a repeated arrpegiated minor-7th chord), sounds and textures repeat through the piece (such as “glassy†chordsin the violins using harmonics), and musical themes float again and again into the surface (such as the melody of “Rock-a-bye Baby,†another popular lullaby that features disturbing lyrics and serves as a transition between the movements). In the finale, all tunes—and cultures—join together: The Yiddish-based “Numi Numiâ€, with its Phyrygian mode, is heard in the bass and provides the foundation for “Danny Boy†an its iconic English-American useof the pentatonic scale, while also supporting figurations from both “Nanita†(featuring a highly-embellished minor-scale Spanish melody) and “Rock-a-bye Baby†(whose sweet melody is disguised under darker harmonies).

Lead Sheet / Fake Book. 2 pages. Martin Hay #880353. Published by Martin Hay (A0.1289648). The Gay Gordons is a lively Scottish country dance that is popular at social gatherings and ceilidhs (traditional Scottish dances). It is a partner dance that involves a combination of skipping steps and waltz-like moves. The dance is typically done in a circular formation with couples facing each other. Here is a basic description of how the Gay Gordons dance is performed:1. **Starting Position:** Couples stand facing each other in a large circle, holding hands. The dance begins with partners side by side, with the man's right hand holding the woman's left hand.2. **Skipping Steps:** The dance starts with a series of skipping steps, where couples move in a circle to the right, taking small skipping steps.3. **Turns:** After a few rounds of skipping, couples will turn 180 degrees to face the opposite direction, still holding hands.4. **Waltz Hold:** Once turned, couples adopt a waltz hold, with the man's right hand around the woman's waist, and the woman's left hand on the man's shoulder. The other hands are joined together.5. **Waltz:** Couples then waltz around the dance floor in a clockwise direction, often taking a few spins.6. **Repeat:** The dance continues with more skipping steps, turns, and waltzing. It is a joyful and energetic dance that is typically danced to traditional Scottish music. The songs in this Gay Gordons set are:**1. The Thistle of Scotland:**The Thistle of Scotland is not a widely recognized or specific song title in Scottish music. Scotland has a rich musical tradition with many songs that celebrate its culture, history, and symbols. The thistle is the national emblem of Scotland, so there may be various songs that reference it indirectly.**2. Mhairi's Wedding:**Mhairi's Wedding is a popular Scottish folk song often played at weddings and celebrations. It tells the story of a wedding celebration and is known for its catchy melody and lyrics that celebrate the joyous occasion of Mhairi's wedding.**3. The Barren Rocks of Aden:**The Barren Rocks of Aden is a famous Scottish military march. It is often played by bagpipe bands and has a distinctive and stirring melody. The tune is associated with the British Army and is a common choice for military processions and parades.**4. Scotland the Brave:**Scotland the Brave is another well-known Scottish patriotic song and march. It is often played at national and sporting events in Scotland. The song celebrates the beauty and spirit of Scotland and is characterized by its uplifting and proud melody. It is a favorite among bagpipers and is often performed with great enthusiasm. These songs are all part of Scotland's rich musical heritage and are played at various occasions to celebrate its culture and history.

Saxophone Quartet,Woodwind Ensemble - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.755222 Composed by Sy Brandon. 20th Century,Contemporary. 95 pages. Sy Brandon #3418983. Published by Sy Brandon (A0.755222). Divertimento is in three movements. The first movement Frolic has three main thematic ideas. The first contains dotted rhythms, staccato articulation, and meter change. The second thematic idea is related to the first in that it also uses dotted rhythms and meter change, but is more legato and begins with more sustained notes. The third thematic section is thinner in texture, more playful, and has a legato theme over a staccato background. The motivic material in each of these sections has similarities. Contrast is primarily obtained through change of style and mood. These thematic ideas develop throughout the movement by varying key, instrumentation, and melodic material. There are several sections of imitation that are very energetic. The second movement Ballad is lyrical at an Andante tempo. The form of the movement is through-composed as the motives develop into new variations instead of having clearly distinguished themes. There is however a recapitulation that brings the listen back to the opening material. The main motives that develop are a sixteenth note pattern that is arpeggiated and also stepwise, a dotted quarter and eighth note idea that is often on weak beats as well as appearing on strong beats, and scalewise eighth note lines. All of these interweave among the parts with frequent counterpoint and some imitation. The harmony is lush with seventh chords used frequently. The last movement Tarantella is in a lively tempo. The form of this movement is a large ABA(Scherzo, Trio, Scherzo). The A sections are in triple meter while the B section is in duple. The A section is in three parts, forming an ABA within the large A. The material for the first part is motivically derived. The first motive is a dotted eighth, sixteenth, eighth note followed by even eighth notes. The second motive is four chromatic sixteenth notes followed by an eighth note. This motive appears both ascending and descending. The B section within this large A consists of a slurred melodic line that has both stepwise motion and leaps. It is accompanied by staccato chromatic eighth notes. The large B section is folksong-like and is in a recognizable binary form that repeats in a new key. The large A serves as a recapitulation of the opening section and it ends lightly and playfully in keeping with the Divertimento title that means to divert or amuse.

Brass Ensemble Horn,Trombone,Trumpet,Tuba - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1030615 Composed by William Billings. Arranged by Mike Allsen. Classical,Praise & Worship,Renaissance,Sacred,Spiritual. Score and parts. 41 pages. Aaron Hettinga #636010. Published by Aaron Hettinga (A0.1030615). William Billings (1746-1800) was North America’s first great choral composer. He spent most of his life in Boston, working at various times as a tanner or as minor civic official, and occasionally as a church musician. Billings seems to have had little formal music training, but when he was just 22, he also set himself up as an itinerant singing-master, teaching “singing-schools,†where children and adults could learn the rudiments of musical notation and solfege. To feed the market he and other singing-masters had helped to create, Billings published six collections of music, mostly for SATB voices, The first of these, The New England Psalm-Singer (1770) featured a frontispiece engraved by his friend Paul Revere. Billings was fairly prosperous by 1780s, but his good fortune faded in the 1790s. His final collection of music, The Continental Harmony of 1794, was published for his benefit by a group of Boston friends. Billings died destitute in 1800. Billings composed some 340 pieces, mostly collected in his printed editions. This music has a rough-edged and sturdy beauty that is distinctly different from anything in contemporary Europe. The vast majority of Billings’s works were hymns or “psalm tunes.†He was particularly attracted to the great English hymn-writer Isaac Watts (1674-1748), though Billings himself wrote verses for many of his hymns. One of the most famous Billings “psalm tunes,†Chester is not a Christian hymn, but rather a patriotic song of defiance directed against the British. Billings spent nearly all of the Revolutionary War in Boston and made no secret of his patriot sentiments. Chester was first published in 1770, but when he republished it in his The Singing-Master’s Assistant during the height of the war in 1778, Billings added a verse calling out the “infernal league†of the leading British generals Howe, Burgoyne, Clinton, Prescot and Cornwallis. Many brass-players will know Chester from the finale of William Schuman’s 1957 band piece A New England Triptych. Billings also composed over 50 “fuging-tunesâ€â€”a genre that usually included a short introduction and a repeated contrapuntal section. (These fuging sections usually begin with imitation, but they are otherwise not at all like classical fugues written in Europe at the time.) The fuging-tune Creation is one of his later works, published in The Continental Harmony of 1794, and experiments with the form. It sets two verses of the Watts hymn “When I With Pleasing Wonder Stand†though final line of verse 1 is repeated in a striking phrase that suddenly moves twice as fast (m.15). The fuging section begins in m.30, and rather than the usual exact repeat, Billing writes an entirely new and more elaborate second section beginning at m.44. Billings first published the simple but beautiful Africa in 1770, and published a revised version in 1778; the later version appearing with the Isaac Watts hymn “Now Shall My Inward Joys Arise.†I first arranged Africa in 1995, for the Glenwood Moravian Trombone Choir (Madison, WI), and I edited it for this publication. Phrasing and articulations marked here reflect the original vocal texts. Africa has long been a favorite of the Glenwood group. Chester and Creation were arranged in 2022. Mike Allsen February 2022.
