Three songs welcoming the coming of spring. The First Spring Day is about the world awakening to the new Spring after a long winter. Man's Fancy is a light hearted song sung by a man who knows that he's head over heels for a woman who doesn't care about him, but it doesn't matter, because he's happy anyway. May Morning, set to a gorgeous poem by John Milton, is about the fullness and warmth of May: Hail bounteous May that doth inspire Mirth, and youth, and warm desire.The songs are relatively short, about 3 minutes each. The voice parts are not difficult, the piano part occasionally requires a pianist who is comfortable playing octaves and leaps.

Published by Yoel Epstein (A0.773330). These six songs have become icons of remembrance of the six million Jews who died in the Holocaust. They are traditionally played on Holocaust Day, which is on the 28th day of the Hebrew month of Nissan in Israel, or January 27th in the rest of the world. Unter Dyne Vyse Shteren (Under the Starry Sky) was written by Avraham Sutskover, a leading Yiddish poet, while trapped in the ghetto of Vilna, in July 1943. Days before the ghetto was destroyed and all the Jews murdered, Sutskover escaped to the forest with his wife. He reached Russia, and in 1947 moved to Palestine. He died in Israel in 2010 at the age of 96. The poem was set to music by Avraham Brodna, a simple laborer in the Vilna ghetto who died in a concentration camp. Ani Maamin (I Believe): The words to this simple song are of the Jewish prayer I believe with perfect faith in the coming of the Messiah. The tune is attributed to Azriel David Festig, a leading Warsaw hazzan (cantor) who died in the Holocaust. The song was performed after the war by Rabbi Shaul Yedidia Eliezer Taub, the Admor (Rabbinical leader) of the Modzitz Hassidic sect, and has become the iconic song of the remembrance in the Hassidic community. Shtiller Shtiller (Hush Hush) was written by Alexander Volkovitzky, then a 12-year-old boy, in the Vilna Ghetto in the spring of 1943. Volkovitzky, who wrote the melody for a song contest organized to encourage the cultural life of the ghetto, eventually came to Israel where he (under the name Alexander Tamir) became a leading pianist and music educator. The words are by Shmerke Kacserginsky, a leading poet of Vilna, who later escaped the Holocaust and migrated to South America. Papirossen (Cigarettes) actually predates the Holocaust by 15 years. It was written by Yiddish actor and composer Herman Yablokoff in 1922 in Grodno, Poland. Yablokoff later immigrated to America, where he produced a musical Papirossen that incorporated the song. It was later made famous by the Barry Sisters, a Yiddish popular music group. Donna Donna was written by Shalom Secunda, with words by Aaron Zeitlin for the Yiddish musical Esterke in 1940. Though the song originally related to the 600-year-old legend of a Polish king who married a Jewess, it quickly became associated with the Holocaust because of its haunting message. The song has entered the popular folk repertoire, with canonical renditions by Joan Baez, Theodore Bikel, and many others. Hatikva (the Hope) is Israel's national anthem. The words are by Naftali Zvi Imber, and the tune is a traditional eastern European tune. You are welcome to try some of my other arrangements. Brief Vibrations (2010) was written for and is dedicated to Jonathan Mark Roberts. The cycle comprises settings for unaccompanied voice of poems by Elisabeth T. Eliassen (b. 1961) from the collection Brief Encounters With Fluidity (2008). I. Kairos II. Stillness Sings III. Within the Embrace IV. Spring Rain V. The Vine VI.Vibrations Performance notes: These songs may be performed by any vocalists of any voice type or sex. They may also be performed in any transposition. However, all songs performed must be transposed in exactly the same manner. Though a performance of all six songs is highly preferred, smaller groupings or individual songs may be performed, particularly if the performance is not in concert. Throughout all songs, exceptional sensitivity, expressivity, and freedom is necessary to project a compelling performance. There should never be any sense of metronomic rigidity. The music serves to express and declaim the text, and this should be the driving force in shaping any interpretation.

It begins with an unaccompanied 2nd cornet/trumpet solo (this part is also very effective on flugelhorn), the lower ensemble then joins before the 1st cornet/trumpet takes over the melody. The 2nd cornet/trumpet part is popular for GCSE ensemble performances as it is in reasonable range and showcases the player's ensemble skills in both solo and accompanying roles. Mozart set Christian Adolph Overbeck’s text to Komm, lieber Mai in January 1791 shortly before what would be his last birthday. Overbeck, a poet and lawyer and later Mayor of Lübeck, wrote a set of poems in 1776 under the title Fritzchen an den Mai (Fritz on the May). This song is highly regarded among the German art songs of the era. Mozart coupled it with two other songs under the title Sehnsucht nach dem Fruhlinge (Longing for Spring). Seemingly taken by his theme, Mozart uses it again in the finale of his last piano concerto, Piano Concerto No. 27 in B-flat Major, K. 595. Mozart’s three songs were published in a collection of children’s song by Ignaz Alberti. While the voice is supposed to be that of a child, it is really an adult’s longing for the flowering of Spring and the promise of new birth and, perhaps, new love.This set of variations were written as a recital work with a young violist (playable in first position) in mind. They are abouyt five minutes in length.

The poems were given to the composer with permission to set them to music. These two songs would make a fine addition to a chamber concert of vocal music. The combined duration is about 5 minutes.
