Luther: Out of the Depths for Bassoon & Piano

Instrumental Duet Bassoon,Instrumental Duet - Level 1 - Digital Download SKU: A0.548710 Composed by Martin Luther. Arranged by James M. Guthrie. Easter,Instructional,Standards. Score and parts. 4 pages. Jmsgu3 #3411733. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.548710). Out of the Depths I Cry to You by Martin Luther arranged for bassoon & piano. The first verses feature modified counterpoint and harmony proceeding at quarter = 82. The final verse is reharmonized for maximum dramatic effect at a more contemplative tempo such as quarter = 64. Features the entire range of the instrument. Very powerful selection for Lent or Easter. Duration (3 verses) 3:05, 36 ms. Score: 3 pg. Solo part: 1 pg. The piano reads from the score. Out of the Depths Aus tiefer Not schrei ich zu dir (From deep affliction I cry out to you), is, of course, a hymn composed by Martin Luther. Moreover, Luther also wrote the lyrics, essentially a paraphrase of Psalm 130. First published in 1524, it is also one of eight songs in the original Lutheran hymnal. It appears likewise in many hymnals and in different translations. The lyrics furthermore stimulated compositions from the Renaissance to the contemporary. Consequently, composers such as Johann Sebastian Bach built an entire chorale cantata on it. Other composers similarly contributed pieces, such as Felix Mendelssohn and Max Reger. Luther Background Martin Luther, (1483 –1546) was a German professor of theology, composer, priest, and moreover, an influential character in the Protestant Reformation. Luther had a momentous impact on church and society due to his contributions to the musical arts. He wanted to disseminate the gospel among mankind and with this intention thought that the best way to do that was through music. Influence It is important to realize that other musicians, and their descendants, were encouraged by Luther’s songs and wrote their own hymns. Luther, to be sure, had a thorough musical education. For example, he knew secular and sacred songs from an early age. He, in particular, played the lute well and sang in the monastery when he was a monk. That is to say, music was an essential part of his life. He in fact first began writing songs in 1523, sometimes writing the melody as well as the lyrics. Luther was certainly able to evaluate the composers of his time. He thought especially highly of Josquin des and Ludwig Senfl. He was also acquainted, with this in mind, with other composers and their works. Legacy The Lutheran musical ethos soon covered all of Germany and later significantly fashioned Protestant musical culture. Heinrich Schütz and Johann Sebastian Bach are the most compelling evidence of this Protestant musical culture. Additionally, as a point often overlooked, the pedal organ, first refined in northern Germany, became universally prevalent. As a matter of fact, Dieterich Buxtehude established a regular evening organ concert series in Lübeck. Another key point is that this concert series, in turn, spread North German Musical ideas worldwide. Luther was especially convinced that music is a beautiful and exclusive offering of the divine.

I have memories of being on the front row of church as a little girl, singing as loud as I could. The album is a tribute to my parents who raised my sisters and I to love God, our country and our families. As many musicians do, I got my start in the church, playing the piano for the Children’s church at the age of 10. It didn’t take long before I started sitting at a 9’ Steinway opposite an incredible organist who changed keys as often as a woman changes her clothes. I fell in love with the simplicity of the hymns and with the many fun arrangements that were possible. The lyrics of some of these hymns have been ingrained in my soul and have brought me comfort, deepened my faith, and have taught me that when all is said and done, the Truth and Faithfulness of God are what will carry me through. If you’re searching for: Christian music, inspirational music or church hymns, consider My Father’s Favorite Hymns. Songs include: Tell Me the Old Old Story; Just a Closer Walk with Thee; Great is Thy Faithfulness; Immortal Invisible; Amazing Grace/It is Well; Your Truth it Stands; Glory to His Name; Stand Up for Jesus/Leaning on the Everlasting Arms; In the Garden; Were You There when they Crucified my Lord? Carson Cooman: The Acts of the Apostles (2009), an oratorio for baritone, chorus, congregation/audie

Chamber Orchestra - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.533578 Composed by Carson Cooman. Christian,Contemporary,Spiritual. Score and parts. 189 pages. Musik Fabrik Music Publishing #3025409. Published by Musik Fabrik Music Publishing (A0.533578). The Acts of the Apostles (2009), an oratorio for baritone, chorus, congregation/audience, and chamber orchestra (piano, organ, strings-suggested minimum of 3.3.3.2.1),was commissioned by The Memorial Church at Harvard University. It is dedicated to Edward Elwyn Jones and theHarvard University Choir. The biblical books of Luke and Acts form a pair of documents from a single author and with a single audience (thelikely-metaphorical “Theophilusâ€), yet they are unusual for being composed in such contrasting genres. Luke’sgospel, using Mark as a primary source throughout, features a comparable literary style to that of the otherevangelists. Acts, by contrast, is a historical monograph that charts the birth of the Church with dramatic storiesabout—and speeches from—the apostles, painting a vivid, if not necessarily chronological, picture of their victoriesand struggles. As such, it is a book that provides excellent source material for a dramatic choral libretto of this scale.Although much of Acts is focused on the ministry of Saul/Paul, this oratorio draws most of its material from thefirst third of the book, prior to and including the conversion of Saul. In the Prologue, Christ’s ascension is narratedand—following an orchestral Sinfonia—the chorus sings words of Jesus from the Sermon on the Plain in Luke’sgospel that foreshadow many of the trials the apostles go on to face. The astounding account of Pentecost follows:here, words from the book of Ruth, customarily read on the feast of Shavuot (Pentecost), are included, telling thestory of a Moabite woman who converted to the Israelite faith—a parallel to the expansion of the Christian messageto all nations by the gift of the Holy Spirit. The Prayer for Boldness, quoting Psalm 2, asks God for protection fromthe threats of persecution that the apostles will now face.Stephen, regarded as the proto-martyr of the Christian Church, offers one of the most developed speeches in Acts, only a small portion of which is presented here. Full of scriptural references, including the quotation from Isaiah“Heaven is my throne…â€, the end of the narrative is remarkable for two reasons: firstly, Stephen’s final wordsmirror those of Christ on the cross in Luke’s gospel—where Jesus forgives his executioners and prays “Father, intoyour hands I commend my spirit†(Luke 23:46); secondly, Saul is specifically mentioned as one who approved ofStephen’s stoning, indicative of the redemptive possibilities of the Christian message. The account of the baptism of the Ethiopian eunuch here in the oratorio ends with the First Song of Isaiah—whilenot quoted in Acts, it seems a fitting conclusion to the scene as Philip and the eunuch were reading Isaiah together, and the canticle has often been associated by Christians with the rite of baptism. Similarly, the story of Saul’sConversion is followed here by a Christological poem found in Paul’s letter to the Philippians, though it is likely aquotation from an earlier source. It is often regarded as the earliest extant Christian hymn. The Acts of the Apostles concludes with Luke’s realistic assessment that in spite of Paul’s energetic evangelism manyremained unconvinced by the Christian message. At the heart of both Luke’s gospel and Acts is the tension betweenthe uniquely important role of the Jewish traditions that Jesus himself practiced and the expansion of the gospel togentiles, of whom Luke himself is one. It is appropriate, therefore, to follow Paul’s message of salvation to thegentiles with the Magnificat: a canticle that emphasizes the promises of God to the people of Israel throughouthistory.Three traditional hymn texts are found in the oratorio, each set congregationally to a pre-existing tune. The first,“Spirit of mercy, truth, and love†is an eighteenth century poem that e.

Woods Only, Arrangements #678684. Published by Woods Only, Arrangements (A0.1074385). This easy arrangement for bassoon duet has been adapted to be simple to perform and understand, adapted for various levels of musical knowledge; from beginners to music professionals. It can be played freely due to the ease built into the piece in relation to the author's suggested interpretation. Recommended for performances at Christian ceremonies and liturgical events in churches, it also serves as a study of the Renaissance repertoire. A Mighty Fortress Is Our God or Ein feste Burg ist unser Gott is a hymn written by Martin Luther probably before 1529. The melody was also considered his work for a long time, but it was created at least with the collaboration of Johann Walter. The song is of great symbolic power for Protestantism; where it is also known as Deus noster refugium et virtus. Considered one of the most important hymns in the history of Christianity, it was considered by the Christian poet Johann Heirich Heine (1797-1856) to be the Marseillaise of the Reformation, in an allusion to the French national anthem.

Choir Sacred - Digital Download SKU: JX.00-36964 Songs for All Seasons / Songs from the Mountain (Orchestration). Arranged by Sheldon Curry. This edition: Orchestration. Choral (Sacred); Choral Worship Cantata; Larger Works; Performance Music Ensemble; Worship Resources. Sacred. Part(s); Score. 367 pages. Jubilate Music Group - Digital #00-36964. Published by Jubilate Music Group - Digital (JX.00-36964). English. Now & Then is an Appalachian collection of old and new hymns and spiritual songs, each created for a specific liturgical calendar purpose, scored for SATB, Appalachian instruments, and strings. The rhythm instrumentation is authentic and Nashville style number chord charts are provided. Optional strings are available to add depth to the worship experience. Curry creates a musically satisfying way to include non-traditionally trained musicians to the community's worship. From the longing of Great Jehovah to the unbridled joy of Resurrection Jubilee, this is a journey you don't want to miss. Titles: Come Thou, Long Expected Jesus * Appalachian Cradle Song * Great Jehovah * Resurrection Jubilee * We Gather to Recall the Night * Come Holy Spirit, Heavenly Dove. Curry, as eclectic a choral writer as they come, sets six anthems, suitable for various seasons in the church year (including Come, Thou Long-Expected Jesus for Advent and Resurrection Jubilee for Easter), in a style that would be right at home on a T-Bone Burnett roots-music album. And like Burnett, Curry expertly crafts the vocal score and accompaniments to be earthy yet polished, so that even those who aren't fans of this genre will find something to enjoy here. -Warren Anderson, Worship Leader magazine

Bassoon,Instrumental Duet - Level 2 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1042668 Composed by Johann Sebastian Bach. Arranged by Ander. Baroque,Easter,Sacred,Wedding. 6 pages. Woods Only, Arrangements #647445. Published by Woods Only, Arrangements (A0.1042668). This easy arrangement for bassoon duet has been adapted to be simple to perform and understand the structure of the original work for various levels of musical knowledge. It can be played freely by beginning students because of the ease imposed on the piece. It is often performed at wedding ceremonies slowly and reverently, challenging the effect suggested by Bach in his original score for voices with trumpet, oboes, strings, and continuous bass. This is one of Bach's most beautiful cantatas, made famous by the Jesus the Joy of Men chorus. It was originally composed for Advent 1716 in Weimar. Years later, already in Leipzig, Advent was tempus clausum, there was no music in the churches. Bach then reworked it for the Feast of Mary's Visitation. It is the final chorale of the cantata Herz und Mund und Tat und Leben. Although it is the 32nd cantata composed by Bach, of those that have survived, it was given BWV 147 in the complete catalog of his works.

I chose places and themes that were compelling for me for a variety of reasons. The first movement, Wupatki, is based on the feeling of expanse and solitude I experience when I am visiting this ancient pueblo and the stunning vistas of the Painted Desert. The Song of Friendship, a charming and simple tune was introduced to me by Gary Gorman, a Native American student of mine in the early 1990’s. I fashioned a simple arrangement and composed some original tunes to accompany it. This movement is dedicated to my colleague, clarinetist Michael Sullivan, who was dying from a rare form of cancer during the days I was finishing this movement. The day I finished the piece, I realized that it needed to end as if it never had a chance to finish, much like Michael’s life that was so tragically cut short. Quite by chance, the music ends at bar 43-the exact number of years of Michael’s brief life. Wind, title of the third movement, was composed to give musical interpretation to this element of relentless fury we experience during several months out of the year in this region. It springs up then dies down, only to resurface with more force and resilience.

This unique approach is reminiscent of the well-known Lessons and Carols format, but causes one to think anew about the meaning of Christmas through poetry rather than scripture. Accompanied by organ, Word Made Flesh incorporates familiar carols throughout, ending with a fully developed carol quodlibet as a finale.

Organ - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.935501 Composed by Kazys Daugela. Christmas,Contemporary. Score. 5 pages. Kazys Daugela #6292379. Published by Kazys Daugela (A0.935501). Four-part suite The Seasons for narrator and orchestra Lithuanian composer Kazys Daugėla created on the basis of K. Donelaitis poem The Seasons plots and the most famous artist Vytautas Kazimieras Jonynas (1907-1997) woodcut illustrations. These Donelaitis poem The Seasons illustrations have become classics of Lithuanian art. Composer created his paintings of the suite using native Lithuania Minor folk song melodies. Some of them are written almost 200 years ago. Most songs used are from Christian Bartsch prepared and published by Lithuanian folk songs Song of the votes. If you do not doubt that the song’s soul is in the melody, it should also be true, that the song is understood correctly only when we sing or listen to it – so believed Ch. Bartsch. He could not possibly foresee that the songs that sounded at his time will be wiped out in parallel with the East Prussian population. But after all, maybe he did predict? Therefore, he was rescuing them. The ancient epics and worldview associate The Seasons with cyclical idea of time, which is expressed by the view of The Sun’s path in the sky. The main hero of this musical work is The Sun and the diversity of nature, life and work associated with it. In the Eternal Circle we born, age, die - everything repeats, nothing new happens. In the second part of the The Cares of Winter, the Lithuanian traditional Advent song Sodai, sodai, leliumoj was used and developed.

Paul Addison #862749. Published by Paul Addison (A0.1270338). This musical tells a story of what life might have been like for Jesus at the age of 12. He learns lessons from the scriptures in synagogue school, including the Creation, the Ten Commandments, and the stories of Samson and David. He has dinner with his family, and his sisters ask about the role of women in the home and in the culture. He discusses learning a trade with his father Joseph. Then the family takes a trip to Jerusalem for the Passover feast, and it is there that Jesus talks with the rabbis and scholars about the deeper meaning of the scriptures. They ask, “Who is this boy?â€, to which the women reply, “His name is Jesusâ€.The songs are at an easy level, mostly with single-line melodies. There is one rap song, “Rabbi’s Rapâ€, which could be accompanied by a beat-box sound. There is also a medley, “Who Is This Boy? / His Name is Jesusâ€, in which the scholars and teachers sing two verses, the women’s chorus sings two verses, and then they sing together. The musical runs about 40 minutes.

This often involves triple or double tonguing. Don’t let this discourage you. Practice it diligently and slowly. You may want to stay with it for more than one lesson. After practicing the difficult etude for at least a month, make a note of it and return to it later. Brass playing is a lifetime commitment and you should continue to grow throughout your playing career. Many of the world’s top players can’t play everything in the Arban book.

Multiple Tonguing
Selecting the best syllables for multiple tonguing is often a problem for brass players and teachers. These are the most common transpositions and are only to provide the trumpet player with some basic transposition skills. The second transposition is for Ab trumpet which is useful if you play a C trumpet and want to read a Bb part.

Songs and duets
Some teachers love these and others don’t. I suggest you try them and if you?d like to supplement other pieces that you need to work on, please feel free to do so. For bass clef instruments Although the page numbering is different, the exercises in the bass clef edition are numbered the same as the trumpet edition, therefore making The Arban Manual viable for bass clef instruments. The songs and duets have been left out of the early bass clef version of Arban, although there is now a new version that does include them. Feel free to supplement music of your choice. Some of the articulations and models may not be practical for slide trombone. About SMP Press
