The first in a series of solo piano works inspired by scenes from literature, The Infernal Whirlwind is both a representation of and reaction to Canto V in Dante's Inferno. Dante and his guide Virgil enter the second level of Hell, where the souls of people who gave into lust are condemned. At first Dante hears but a faint sound of commotion, but upon fully entering the level he encounters a massive tempest of souls being buffeted about. He recognizes some famous figures here and there. Eventually, his attention is drawn to two figures, the primary one being Francesca da Rimini. She tells of how, after reading of Sir Lancelot, she and her brother-in-law allowed themselves to love each other. Dante, deeply moved by the pathos of Francesca's story and disturbed by the continuous whirlwind, faints.Composers such as Rachmaninov and Tchaikovsky have been inspired by Francesca da Rimini specifically, but The Infernal Whirlwind is more concerned with what the whirlwind itself represents: the control lust and desire held on these souls, both while living and in the afterlife. The central theme is a twelve-tone row, but the work is not truly serialist in construction or conception: It rather represents the winding, ranging, unsettled nature of passion itself, and of the whirlwind.The piece lasts about 5 minutes, and is for an advanced player. In the beginning it requires use of all three pedals (una corda, sostenuto, sustain). Perhaps the main influence is Liszt, and one could find useful a Lisztian approach to performance. .

ItalianQuando, a Gennaio 2020, le prime notizie dell'influenza COVID-19 cominciavano a giungere dalla Cina, ho immaginato le anime e gli spiriti dell'umanità , ciò che ci rende veramente umani e differenti dagli altri animali e dagli inumani, allontanarsi da questi corpi a cui viene vietato di respirare, parlare, pensare, abbracciarsi e baciarsi. Come foglie al vento, alla ricerca di un'Altra Umanità .Con queste immagini in mente ho buttato giù di getto le frasi e le armonie dei quattro movimenti, che successivamente ho deciso di orchestrare per quartetto d'archi, ritenendolo il veicolo migliore per tradurre le suddette immagini con la musica scritta nei suoni che avrebbero accompagnato tale esilio.EnglishWhen, in January 2020, the first news about the COVID-19 flu begun spreading from Cina I have imagined souls and spirits of humankind, what makes us true humans and different from other animals and from the inhumans, going away from their bodies, which are forbidden to breath, speak, think, hug and kiss. When in flight, they come across other souls and travel some of the journey together until fate sets them on separate paths again.As poet Luis Alberto Spinetta so eloquently worded it: I have to learn how to fly among so many people standing. Our flying souls can sometimes be hard to track. They are chasing dreams, so we have to learn how to fly away from our everydayness and closer to them. Merely watching our souls fly away will mean forsaking the chance to visit the sky where our dreams are, that same sky where the ancient Celts believed was the home of the Gods, the Otherworld. Published by Burke & Bagley (A0.787250). SONG OF THE MOUNTAINS is a setting for mixed (SSAATB) choir with piano accompaniment of text adapted from prose by American naturalist John Muir (1838-1914). Commissioned for the Combined Choirs of St. Joseph's School, Seattle, directed by Rick Boyle, who premiered the piece at Benaroya Hall's Nordstrom Recital Hall on May 6, 2004, in the second annual New Works New Hope concert for the benefit of Gilda's Club Seattle. The piece was revised in 2007 and the premiere of the revised score was given on November 16, 2007, by the Queens College Chorus, Cindy Bell conducting, at the Aaron Copland School of Music in New York. It was selected by the Portland Vocal Consort for their 2013 Best of the Northwest program. Duration ca. 6 minutes. Conductor Cindy Bell says, Driven by a refreshing text of American naturalist John Muir, Bartholomew has created an accessible work that flows easily through both key and meter changes, and features expressive, lyric melodies contrasted by exciting rhythmic drive. Song of the Mountains is almost cantata-like, or through-composed, in that each line of Muir's text receives equal and interesting interpretation. Occasional use of the triplet rhythm creates both a relaxing effect (grasses cease waving) and driving sense of forward motion (Vibrating!). Effective use of dynamics and interweaving of choral parts make for each section having a musical life of its own. The rivers flow not past, but through us, thrilling, tingling, vibrating every fiber and cell of the substance of our bodies, Making them glide and sing. The trees wave and the flowers bloom in our bodies as in our souls, and every bird song, wind song, and tremendous storm song of the rocks in the heart of the mountain, is our song, our very own, and sings our love.

Composition for flute trio (2024). There’s a tarantella in E minor (1st theme), and a slower musette/carousel (2nd theme). I’ve scarcely ever been to luna parks but I do remember the ones in Woody Allen’s “Wonder Weel”, in “The Machinist”, and in a Dirty Harry movie. Oh and of course in “Carnival of Souls” (1962). They must have left me somehow with the impression that luna parks aren’t fun.

Published by Niska Music Publishing (A0.1125807). The travels of the three wise men as they followed a star to see the newborn King was the inspiration for this arrangement. It starts with the right hand representing the twinkling of the stars in the vastness of the heavens, while the left hand provides the feeling of winds blowing across the desert sands as the magi set out on their journey. Soon the melody is heard in the right hand, though in a more stately rhythm than the traditional, more pastoral original. The left hand continues its sweeping motion unabated and drives the piece ever onward as the wise men draw ever nearer to their destination. The minor mood of the song is replaced in the chorus as the star of wonder shines down upon them, filling their souls with hope. Eventually they arrive at the stable and offer their gifts to the babe lying in a manger: gold, frankincense and myrrh. It is the last of these gifts which foreshadow the death of Christ and his burial in the stone-cold tomb. After they have spent some time praising their new-found king, the three wise men return to their homeland as the music follows them back across the desert sands to their homes in the East.

Cycles for bassoon quartet honors those who lost loved ones in the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami in Japan. The title reflects both the living earth upon which we live and the fortitude of humanity. The first movement depicts serenity interrupted by bombastic resemblances of earthquakes and tsunamis. The movement is called The Living Earth as our planet is still evolving by constantly building up pressure and releasing that pressure. The opening serene section uses key clicks and wind sounds in the serenity section. Pitch bends in the melody are designed to resemble a shakuhachi. Syncopated explosions that use polytonal pentatonic scales represent the earthquake. Rapid ascending and descending scale patterns depict the resultant tsunami. The second movement is a hymn song for the souls of the dead. It is called Ashes to Ashes as it represents a different cycle, one of death and rebirth. Pentatonic scales abound once again but this time they modulate gently from one tonality to another instead of being used simultaneously. A song of redemption and hope for the survivors is the theme for the third and final movement, Resiliency of the Spirit. It depicts the strength of the human spirit and it is the cycle of joy growing out of sorrow. Taiko drumming is the major influence in this movement. It begins with a foot stomp followed by the drummers warming up. A staccato rhythmic section that imitates the drums follows this. A hymn-like theme in pentatonic is interpolated over this rhythmic drumming bringing the movement and the piece to a hopeful conclusion.
