Published by Distant Engraver Music (A0.977038). This imaginative piece evokes the creation of a large metal sculpture and the various natural sounds that inspired it. Percussion instruments are used to evoke the quiet sounds of water bubbles, rain, ocean waves, a bird call... Then there are also many metallic scraping, tapping, dragging and hammering sounds evoking the sculptures creation. The sculpture itself is represented by a bright colorful chord succession, but the complete succession doesn't immediately appear. While the artist is still gathering metal materials and working on the sculpture, the chords appear as various isolated arpeggios in and around the various other sounds of the piece. It isn't until the sculpture begins taking shape that the tempo increases and the chords become recognizable as a theme. This piece requires performers with good ears for color and a knack for finding just the right way to strike or scrape an instrument (instructions are provided on the score). Also, there is much changing of mallets and/or the way they are held, and at times the vibraphone part requires wide-ranging fast arpeggios.INSTRUMENTATIONPerformer 1:vibraphonelarge suspended cymbal (22 preferred)

Born in about 1343 in Norwich, England, Julian survived the Black Plague as a girl of six. She became an anchoress at St. Julian’s Church in Norwich where she lived in prayerful seclusion. In 1373, she became very sick at age 30. Near the point of death, a curate showed her a crucifix for comfort. She then experienced a series of intense visions of Christ and recovered from her illness to write eloquently about her “shewings.†The beautiful Medieval English text for this piece is from The Shewings of Julian of Norwich, Part I lines 148-154 in which Julian reflects on the vision she experienced about a hazelnut in the palm of her hand. She comes to understand that God loves even a small, ordinary thing like a hazelnut, such that it will not disintegrate but last forever because of God’s love for it. In Julian’s vision, the hazelnut symbolizes all that is made — all of Creation that God made and loves forever. The music combines Medieval sounds and counterpoint with lush, modern harmonies, woven together with the smooth color and elegant lines of the clarinet. Singers use Original Pronunciation to capture the lyricism of Julian’s words. Published by ConSordino Music Publishing (A0.751143). Ikarus started life as a composition for 9 solo string instruments but soon grew into a fully orchestrated piece. On one hand it tells the classic story of Ikarus who, ignoring the warnings of his father, flew too close to the sun and died. On the other hand it pays homage to the inventiveness of the human spirit and embraces mankind’s ability, through the creation of complicated machines, to achieve more than our mortal bodies would allow.The music starts softly with Ikarus preparing for his take-off. Slowly the huge wings unfold and the piece lifts off with a majestic theme/motif. The nervous sixteen notes in the string section symbolize the constant flow of air and motion needed by Ikarus to fly.The joy of movement is mirrored by the cellos and bassoons, gliding in and out of the orchestra. Sounds of birds, clouds and impressions of earth from above are represented by various short melodic or rhythmic fragments throughout the first phase of his flight.Slowly the intensity and excitement builds until we are completely swept away and have lost all sense of reason or danger. Then, in the climax of the composition, Ikarus and his wings crash to the ground and the orchestra brakes down with him, loosing feather after feather until all has been destroyed. After this violent moment, the compositions quiets down gradually and reflects on the failure of Ikarus.Performed and recorded by Robert Ian Winstin and the Kiev Philharmonicon July 14, 2005Orchestral Material for Performance available as Rental Only.

Cantico uses the sounds of S Francis's original text (in his native Umbrian dialect) to create aural pictures of the different works of nature. The piece various sound effects derived from the original text, and much enjoyed by the choir.
