What Wondrous Love is This!arranged for violin and piano by Stephen R Dalrymple transcribed for flute, clarinet, trumpet, euphonium (or trombone), viola, and cello recording performed by Jim Jansen and Stephen R Dalrymple   The lyrics were first published in Lynchburg, Virginia in the 1811 camp meeting songbook A General Selection of the Newest and Most Admired Hymns and Spiritual Songs Now in Use. In most early printings, no author is listed for the text. The 1848 hymnal The Hesperian Harp attributes the text to Alexander means, a Methodist pastor from Oxford   Most sources attribute the hymn's melody to the 1701 English song The Ballad of Captain Kidd, but the melody predates the Kidd tune, however, possibly by more than a century. Camp meeting attendees during the Second Great Awakening would sing the hymns from text only hymnals to a variety of popular melodies. The text and melody were first published together in The Southern Harmony, a book of shape note hymns compiled by William Walker. This is evidently an earlier song with some similar words in the refrain. The Good Physician was published in the shape note hymnal, The Southern Harmony and Music Companion as early as 1835. Balm in Gilead was published in The Revivalist as early as 1868. Both of these songs were collected by their publishers and the lack of a listed composer shows their apparent age. ♫ The Good Physician has 4 verses with no refrain. Balm in Gilead has 4 verses with a refrain. ♫ Music and hymn singing was an important catalyst in both the First Great Awakening (1730 to about 1755 in colonial America) and the Second Great Awakening (1790-1840 in the American frontier of the time.) Brightest and Best is an original piece based on the hymn tune STAR IN THE EAST (from The Southern Harmony), most commonly used with the text Brightest and Best of the Sons of the Morning. As such, the arrangement is well suited to use in the Christmas and Epiphany seasons. However, the tune's general appeal make it a great addition to worship in any season, as well as use in concert or recital settings.In addition to the main hymn melody, this piece is woven through with original counter melodies and rich harmonies. Through much of the piece, flowing, running 8th notes and rhythmic bass lines maintain motion beneath the soaring melody. The second verse slows down with a quarter note motif reminiscent of change-ringing bells, keeping an open and ethereal sound with building anticipation before the interlude melodies return in full force for the conclusion.Most of these features and ideas appear in both the secondo and primo parts in this 1-piano, 4-hands piece. The first half of the work is an exploration by the listener of various religions through hymns of various denominations offset with the seeker melody. There is a brief narration that is juxtaposed with antiphonal trumpet, and then the setting of Psalm 150 for the remainder of the piece. This features the 3 tenors and utilizes both English and Latin text. The work is 10 minutes in duration.
