Some years ago, I saw a video of an orangutang sort of running about with some latin music and it was labled Salsa Time and I knew that someday I would write a piece with that title. Well, once it was finished, and I listened and meditated over what it said to me, what I heard was the westward migration of the early settlers of America, only in and through Mexico. Journey To The Setting Sun became my title, but to give it a bit more authenticity, the title is in Spanish, and has become Viaje al Atardeser.The piece opens with a train whistle. If you have none, the Flute 1 & 2 parts have it simulated. Rehearsal markers 1A through 1D serve as layers that lead to the main melody starting at A. At letter B, the Solo 1st trumpet takes on the melody with a slight variation of rhythm. There is a trombone trio from C to D. If you have 3 stong trombonists, I recommend the Eupf and Baritone TC opt out of playing through this section, in order to highlight your great trombone section. *Optional* You may, at your discretion put a fermata after the first beat of the bar before D and allow your solo trumpeter to play a free form cadenza. The mp3 has a sample of how this would sound. The cadenza would end with the pick-up to letter D and you may feel free to let that high note of the solo trumpet ring for a second or two before cuing the rest of the band in. Although from D to the a tempo 4 bars before E is a trumpet solo, the most crucial part of that section is the tambourine part going into double time, creating that extra pop and sense of urgency.This piece represents a watershed moment in my life, as it is my first composition for Concert Band.I encourage all feedback at sirlunch@gmail.comI hope you enjoy it!

Sousa is quoted as saying “A composition in march tempo must have the military instinct, and that is one reason why so few of the great composers have written successful marches. They lived in an atmosphere of peace. The roll of musketry had no meaning for them, so that quality is entirely absent from their work. The Spanish War was an inspiration to me. “The Man Behind the Gun†was a musical echo of it.â€Â This Brass Quintet arrangement was made using “The President’s Own†United States Marine Band’s The Complete Marches of John Philip Sousa score as found at https://www.marineband.marines.mil/Audio-Resources/The-Complete-Marches-of-John-Philip-Sousa/. The Man Behind the Gun was composed in 1899, and the referenced edition was made Public Domain in 2018. The piece is catalogued as Volume 4, No. 57.Section titles (such as “First Strain†and “Trioâ€) follow the measure numbers provided by that edition. Each instrument follows its full-band part as often as possible, the only exception being Trombone covering the Euphonium/Baritone part. Because of this, Euphonium/Baritone would make a suitable substitute.

Lágrima (Teardrop) is a romantic prelude for solo guitar by Spanish guitarist Francisco Tárrega. It is one of the best-known original compositions by Tárrega. It has been published by Ildefonso Alier.Analysis:Lágrima is a very short miniature consisting of only 16 bars. It takes around 2 minutes to perform and its tempo marking is andante. It has an A-B-A structure, section A being in E major and B in E minor, and has been overwhelmingly highlighted by critics because of its simplicity and melancholic atmosphere. Each section has 8 bars. Section A consists of a very simple and predictable melody with quarter notes and dotted half notes, while the accompaniment has eighth notes. Section B turns a little bit less predictable but otherwise still very simple, with eighth notes on the main voice. At the end of section B, section A is repeated to close the work.[ As usual in Tárrega's composition, Lágrima bears some technical difficulties in spite of its simplicity.Composed between late 1891 and early 1892, it is one of Tárrega's most performed pieces. Lágrima has not been included in a definitive catalogue of his works. It has been, however, included in other collections of pieces and has been numbered depending on the position in those collections or in recordings.Musical style:Tárrega composed music in the romantic style of 19th-century European masters. His conservatory training and familiarity with contemporary classical genres and techniques are apparent in his compositions and transcriptions; these are more sophisticated than those of Spanish guitarist-composers of the previous generation and his contemporaries, e.g., Magín Alegre, Tomás Damas, Julián Arcas, José Viñas, and José Ferrer.A virtuoso on his instrument, he was known as the Sarasate of the guitar, although Tárrega preferred small intimate performances over the concert stage.Tárrega is considered to have laid the foundations for 20th-century classical guitar and for increasing interest in the guitar as a recital instrument.

Alongside Gladiolus Rag, Pine Apple Rag, The Ragtime Dance and The Entertainer, Solace was one of Joplin's compositions which featured in the soundtrack of the 1973 film The Sting and helped to revive his music's popularity.

Published by Michael P Walker (A0.1148100). Melchior de Barberis (1500-1549) was an Italian lutenist and composer.His book Opera Intitolata Contina was published in Venice in 1549. Most of the book is dedicated to the lute, but the final few pages of the book contain 4 pieces (fantasias) for the renaissance guitar. Barberis refers to the instrument as the chitara da sette corde (guitar with seven strings). Giacomo Gorzanis, (1525 – 1578), was a lute virtuoso, blind, and possibly a member of the nobility. He was born in Apulia, near Naples, and probably trained at the Spanish court in Bari. Gorzanis traveled to Austria where he became a citizen and where he published four collections of lute tablature and two collections of Neapolitan lute songs. About Michael P Walker I studied guitar at Birmingham-Southern College under David Walpert who was a student of Andre Segovia and I have been playing guitar, ukulele, Baroque guitar, and the lute for more than fifty years. Just as Adrian Le Roy published these pieces to expand the repertoire of the Renaissance guitar, I have transcribed these compositions with the hope of exposing this rich, beautiful music from the Renaissance to a wider audience of guitar and ukulele players. Along with this book, there are more than 80 books of arrangements of Renaissance, Baroque, Classical, and Romantic era music for the baritone ukulele and there are more than Thirty-Five others with arrangements for the Low G ukulele.
