This collection of seven songs is inspired by Spanish folk and flamenco music. Each song is representative of a different style or genre, including dances, romances, work, and religious and songs. Spain has a long history of folk music dating back to the Middle Ages; a tradition that is still very much alive today. The music has been influenced by many different cultures over the centuries and has been the inspiration for musicians across the world.Songs1.Sevillanas are a type of folk song and associated dance for couples, originating in the nineteenth century. Today they are still very popular, particularly at fiestas and other social events.2.Cabaliño is a Galician work song about a young horse, arranged in the style of a flamenco tango.3. La Petenera is a combination of two songs in very different styles - a flamenco Petenera from AndalucÃa and a Mexican son huasteco, a genre that is noteworthy for its flamboyant and virtuoso violin parts.4. Saetas are religious songs that are performed at Easter (Semana Santa).5.There are many hundreds of versions of the old folk tale Gerineldo, telling the story of love between a Queen and her page boy. This Spanish/Jewish version is over 500 years old, from the time when the Moors ruled over much of the Iberian Peninsula.6.Villancico Asturiano is a traditional Christmas carol from Asturias, combined with a setting of a Christmas poem written in the seventeenth century by Robert Herrick for King Charles II of England.7.The lyrics from La Tarara are drawn from the poem of the same name by the Spanish poet Federico Lorca, who based his poem on a traditional children´s playground song. La Tarara is a mystical woman who dances around the countryside. The music in this version is in the style of a Tanguillo – a type of flamenco dance from Cadiz.

Spanish Christmas Carol for 2 Flutes
The composer of the song La nana, balada al nio Jess was Jos Ramn Gomis, born in Novelda, Alicante;2 the lyrics are by Juan Francisco Muoz y Pabn. The Society of Spanish Authors published the score in 1904.3
The song was compiled by the musicologist Kurt Schindler in his work "Folk music and poetry of Spain and Portugal",4 as collected by the author in Medinaceli, Soria, around 1930.5 Someone sang the first eight bars of the melody composed by Jos Ramn Gomis, and some verses of the lyrics.6
The first recordings of the song are from 1931,7 performed by Marcos Redondo for the Casa Oden, and from 1932,8 performed by Julio Vidal and his group for La voz de su amo.
There is an arrangement of four mixed voices entitled Fuentecilla que corres. It was performed by Eduardo Cifre,9 in 1974 or 75.6 and is very popular among Spanish choirs.

The song is sung from the perspective of children who, upon seeing the Christ Child, ask “What should we give to the Child of the Mother?†First they choose their best-tasting foods: raisins, figs, walnuts and olives; then, a blanket for warmth from the cold. Finally, angels descend from Heaven to cradle the Child, singing “songs of glory that are not of the world.â€The carol may date from 18th-century Catalonia, which is today an autonomous community of Spain lying mostly on the northeast of the Iberian Peninsula, with Barcelona — Spain's second-most populous city — as its capital.The Spanish guitar master Andres Segovia (1893-1987) often performed Miguel Llobet's (1878-1938) transcription of this simple, lovely tune as an encore.This arrangement is an ideal vehicle to teach lyrical playing and legato style; dynamic control and the shaping of phrases; and the “handing-off†of phrases and phrase segments from one section to another to sustain and complete a musical idea. Published by Curtis Hanson (A0.1112712). In this post-pandemic era, demand for octavos for smaller choirs is on the rise. A La Nanita Nana is a lovely Spanish carol probably most well known in the arrangement by Norman Luboff. In this setting for 2 part mixed voices, the baritone line is a hybrid of bass/tenor ranges making it very accessible to a young choir with limited male voices. The treble part sits a little more in the soprano range and requires use of the head register. The only major challenge to the piece is to differentiate between the major and minor keys. Text is given in both Spanish and English allowing for multiple ways to interpret. It would be a welcome addition to any holiday program. It is also available for expanded choral voicing. This would be a welcome addition to the library with minimal voices. It would also work well as a duet.
