The first half underscores time lapse footage of the rapidly melting snowman, syncing precise sforzando punctuations to moments of falling chunks. The sunset remains were gleefully decimated by our six-year-old James.Shuttle from Haneda depicts a delayed return from a trip. The video elicited an atonal compositional style to underscore the hustle and chaos of a city as enormous as Tokyo, but with a lovely view of the Bay about midway through the work.Petite Wave was composed to accompany a time lapse hanging of a three-panel canvas print of the woodcut art “The Great Wave off Kanagawa” by Japanese artist Katsushika Hokusai in 1831. This art was featured on the cover of Claude Debussy’s “La Mer” when it was published in 1905, prompting a quote from “La Mer.”Fast Food to Fitness aurally illustrates a pan of nine fast food ads on a sheet. The bottom ad ironically promotes “BeFit 360”. The music has a series of exciting flourishes that morph into a sinister chord as the last ad dampens the caloric prospects.Pigeons personifies a substantial flock of pigeons contentedly pecking at grass. I filmed while slowly approaching, occasionally causing a stir. The nervous flock took flight to find less threatening spot of ground to peck. The scene presented some fine opportunities for musical underscoring.Blue Snowman Group accompanies a rare Tokyo storm that dumped inches of wet packing snow. When my ten-year-old started rolling the base of a snowman, I whipped out my cell phone and started a time lapse video. Mom came out and built her own, armed with a spray bottle of colored water. The two snowmen turned blue in the cold and lived happily together for a couple of days.Autumn Fuji Puzzle undersores tightly crafted moments of puzzle-working and deconstruction.Outing in Japan was crafted to highlight key moments of a time lapse, running errands in northwest Tokyo. Many subtle and obvious moments in this work aurally augment visually stimulating moments, including blinking turn signals, passing traffic, turns, vehicle approaches, parking at destinations, and many more.

I originaly wrote this march for Brass Band. It's called 'Setting the Watch' and is inspierd by the Ripon Hornblower with the tradition going back over a thousand years to Saxon times when Viking raids were common occurrences and people lived in fear of their property, livestock and even lives being lost in night-time attacks. In 886, the English King was Alfred the Great and he made it his mission to visit his people bringing a message of safety and stability. In Ripon he granted the people a Royal Charter and gave them a symbolic horn as a gift, advising them that they should be always alert to the dangers of invaders. The people of Ripon decided to employ a night watchman that they called a “wakemen†to patrol from dusk until dawn ready to sound the horn gifted by the King should he spot any trouble approaching. For further reassurance, the wakeman sounded the horn at each of the four corners of the market place at 9pm every night to let the people know that he was on duty and they could sleep easily. This sounding of the horn at 9pm became known as setting the watch.

My grandmother, Adriana Verdonk-Romijn, was born in 1923, on a ship that was first named Baronie then Spes Salutes. Her family lived on the ship which they used to transport cargo in and around the Netherlands. During World War II, they were carrying a load of straw and were spotted by ally aircraft. The pilots thought that it was a German boat and began firing. The straw caught fire, and to save as much of the boat as possible, the Romijn family pumped it full of water and sunk it. Later, they brought it up again and started to refurbish it. However, the local community was afraid that the Germans would attack via u-boats, and they decided to sink the ship at the mouth of the harbour. After the war, the ship was brought up for a second time and reinhabited by the Romijn family. In 1988 the ship was christened the Aldebaran by a new owner and is now a tourist attraction. This piece is not about these events, but rather, about the ship as it carried my family to various destinations. Although it is only a vessel made of lifeless materials, I almost think of it as a hero and veteran. CREDITS: Performance by Sharon Wei (viola) & Angela Park (piano) Performed on March 4, 2021.

I continue to take classes three or four times a week. It's fun, athletic, and challenging. And I'm still working on the basic notion of spotting in my pirouettes ... So when Max Hobart of the Civic Symphony Orchestra of Boston agreed to premiere a new work of mine I knew it had to be a symphonic ballet. Coincidentally, I discovered that my favorite cartoonist, Edward Gorey, is also a balletomane. He lived in New York City between 1953 and 1986 and never missed a single performance of the New York City Ballet. Apparently his leaving New York to live permanently on Cape Cod was prompted by the death of George Balanchine in 1983. Among Edward Gorey's many books there is one, The Gilded Bat, about a young woman, Maud Splaytoe, and her adventures in the ballet world. She dies in the end when the plane she is in flies into a great, dark bird. Hmmm, I thought, The Gilded Bat would make a nice adagio movement. To complete the work, I found four other Gorey books that attracted me in mood and texture: The Nursery Frieze - dogs running across the edge of a nursery ceiling, barking out words whose sequence provides no sense or meaning, e.g., Archipelago, cardamon, obloquy, ignavia, samisen, bandages, wax, Gavelkind, ... ; The Raging Tide - a fantastical story about four creatures, Figbash, Hooglyboo, Naeelah and Skrump, who would not stop abusing each other; The Utter Zoo - an alphabet book of zoo animals of Edward Gorey's concoction, e.g., Ampoo, Boggerslosh, Crunk, Dawbis, Epitwee, ... ; and The Blue Aspic - a macabre story of a mad fan, Jasper Ankle, who stalks an opera diva, Ortenzia Caviglia. When he finally meets her at the stage-door after a performance, he stabs her in the throat and cries, J'ai trouvé Hortense! Symphony No. 2 ... A Phantasmagorey Ballet is in five movements: I. The Nursery Frieze, Con moto. II. The Gilded Bat Adagio: Pas seul for Mirella Splatova, aka Maud SplaytoeIII. The Raging Tide Presto: Pas de Quatre for Figbash, Hooglyboo, Naeelah and Skrump. IV. The Blue Aspic Allegro: Valzer alla Prokofiev ... Pas de deux for Jasper Ankle and Ortenzia Caviglia. V. The Utter Zoo Largo: Grand Funk Finale. For details, please consult my biographers. Untransferable is the lived experience, the pain – and consciousness. The approach to this album is conceptual, as a journey from darkness to light, from the forces of oppression to liberation, from thanatos to survival. Musically, this album is also a way of reaffirming that I want, that I need to play and record music that is as authentic as possible, and not what is supposed to be successful in certain contexts. Certainly, the pieces on this album can be performed individually. These eleven works were recorded at Access All Areas Studios, Bremen (Germany); recording and mastering engineer: Nils Völcker. The recordings can be found on all digital streaming platforms (Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon, TikTok, Instagram, etc.). Until the full release of the album on 19 May 2023, please look out for the individual titles, which appear every four to five weeks. This project has been funded by the German Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and Media as part of the funding programme NEUSTART KULTUR – German Music Council Scholarship Programme 2022. This piece is part of a cycle of works composed as the soundtrack to an imaginary documentary called The World of EugeÌ€ne Atget. If the film did exist, I’d like to think that this music would make a suitable accompaniment to the French photographer’s haunting images. In 2005 I saw an exhibition of Atget's work at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and was captivated by his photos of Old Paris in the early 20th Century. He viewed his images as documents rather than art but they are beautifully atmospheric and influenced the Surrealists. Of course, this GymnopeÌdie was also inspired by Erik Satie who lived and worked in Paris around the same time as Atget (although I don't know if they ever met). My recording of this piece can be found on the album Scenes Vol. 1 by Jeremy Cullen, available on on Spotify, Apple Music, iTunes and Amazon.

Gathering Starflowers distils, in the form of a symphonic poem interspersed with narratives commenting on the story, elements of Gnter Grass? 1969 novel - Local Anaesthetic - itself a powerful satirical polemic on the futility and wastefulness of war. In his novel, Grass has two of his characters, who lived through the 1939-1945 war as teenagers, continually relive it and relive major battles of the campaign in the East to overcome the Red Army and win Russia for the German Reich.
Gathering Starflowers is written to be performed as a melodrama. A 'drama with music'. The drama will be provided by a narrator who will read excerpts from Local Anaesthetic interspersed with dramatic dialogues from which the audience will learn a little about the main protagonists of Gnter Grass? novel. The music, especially composed by Chris Gordon, is for two pianos.
