He Will Lead Me Home (choral church anthem composed in 2023)The InspirationA few Easter seasons ago, during one of our Tuesday Choir rehearsals, we were preparing for “Good Shepherd Sundayâ€. Diane our Choir director commented “there are very few Good Shepherd pieces to choose fromâ€. One of our sopranos replied “Let's write our ownâ€. I made note of it and this past year finally found the time and inspiration to give it a try. I did my usual research on the subject matter and then found a drawing of a Shepherd standing at the top of a hill with his sheep lined up behind him. Leaning on his staff the Shepherd was contemplating the safest route home. Upon his decision he looked back and called to his sheep. The MusicThe music begins with a piano introduction depicting the Shepherd standing at the top of the hill contemplating the safest route home, as noted earlier. Stately in nature it features a simple melodic idea, played by the right hand, which is then answered by a series of majestic chords. This “back and forth†continues until it reaches its climax at a D flat major chord against a slur from a high G to F. At this point we hear what will be a reoccurring chordal theme of C major to F major and later C minor to F major. The accompaniment begins, now in three quarter time signifying the sheep beginning to move in response to the shepherds call. The verse melody is drawn from the opening three notes of the introduction but with a different rhythm and repeats it self with underlying harmonic changes. The melody and chord structure is somewhat impressionistic in nature. Lyrically a contrast is drawn between how the Shepherd (Jesus) provides for his sheep (followers) and how God provides for the “sheep†(animals) through nature. As the verse comes to an end we are lead to the realization that “the shepherd is the Lord our King, the Good Shepherd Kingâ€. The refrain begins with the tenor continuing to solo on the main melody. â€He Will Lead Home†is realized and proclaimed! A soprano descant is added for contrast. Harmonically the music makes use of the various minor key options, “melodic, harmonic and naturalâ€. The refrain concludes proclaiming “The Good Shepherds the Way He's our Life!â€. The second verse shadows the thought pattern of verse one leading to the refrain once more but this time a bridge is introduced to add drama with the piano playing a significant role. A return to the refrain is varied with the tenor singing a portion of it against softly played chords; but then resumes its rhythmic drive to its ultimate conclusion by repeating “the Good Shepherds the Way He's our Life!â€.Program NotesVoicing can be varied based on what types of singers are available. For example this could be sung by 2 tenors with one singing the descant down an octave. Finally as noted in the score, the intro is optional though I prefer it be played; the shepherd contemplating a safe route is important in the music with its contrast to the verse music and important in our life of faith.Â

Published by Niska Music Publishing (A0.1125807). The travels of the three wise men as they followed a star to see the newborn King was the inspiration for this arrangement. It starts with the right hand representing the twinkling of the stars in the vastness of the heavens, while the left hand provides the feeling of winds blowing across the desert sands as the magi set out on their journey. Soon the melody is heard in the right hand, though in a more stately rhythm than the traditional, more pastoral original. The left hand continues its sweeping motion unabated and drives the piece ever onward as the wise men draw ever nearer to their destination. The minor mood of the song is replaced in the chorus as the star of wonder shines down upon them, filling their souls with hope. Eventually they arrive at the stable and offer their gifts to the babe lying in a manger: gold, frankincense and myrrh. It is the last of these gifts which foreshadow the death of Christ and his burial in the stone-cold tomb. After they have spent some time praising their new-found king, the three wise men return to their homeland as the music follows them back across the desert sands to their homes in the East.

Bramshill was written to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the police staff college and was premiered by the British Police Symphony Orchestra in 2008. In 2011 it undertook some quite serious revision. Bramshill House was until recently the home of the Police Staff College. In 1953 the Home Office purchased Bramshill from Lord Brocket. There is evidence that the site has been inhabited since the time of Domesday and the Norman Conquest. The present building was constructed principally by Edward Zouche, 11th Baron Zouche of Harringworth, between c. 1605-1625. The music is written in large ternary form as a concert rondo. There are features within which depict and draw together various facets of the early history of Bramshill House as a Jacobean structure with that of its current role as the police staff college. After a declamatory eighteen bar opening in the key of C minor the piece leads towards the principal theme - it is introduced by the horn, quietly accompanied by chords from the clarinets dipping in and out of the chalumeau register - a haunting, ethereal theme that depicts the mystery of the ancient building and its numerous reported wraiths. The theme develops and is pronounced giacoso in the strings with light accompaniment in the higher woodwinds. A restatement of the main theme is followed by a section, fugato; this depicts a police officer on the beat in the early hours of a cold, wet, winter’s night. This theme transmutes into a quasi-stately dance such as may have been performed in Bramshill’s great withdrawing room or the long gallery in the 1600’s. A series of 6/3 chords then develop into what sounds akin to a police siren; the section culminates in a wash of sound with police theme, stately dance and siren sounding simultaneously. In the final section, the principal theme is reiterated in various guises and sub-themes are further explored.

Published by Richard Hirsch (A0.594506). An arrangement of the Flamenco Soleares style (palo) for the dance (baile). The musical material for the arrangement is taken from standard traditional themes for the Soleares style of Flamenco. The arrangement is meant for guitarists and students of guitar that are new to Flamenco and want to learn the basics for one of the most important palos in Flamenco. The arrangement can be used to accompany a solo dance, customary in serious (jondo) Flamenco, often performed by a woman dancer. The Soleares rhythm consists of a repetition of a twelve beat phrase the Flamencos refer to as a compás where accents fall on the third, sixth, eight, tenth, and twelfth beats of the phrase (1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12). I notate the compás as a series of five measures that comprises two 3/4 measures followed by three 2/4 measures. Throughout the notation there is, therefore, a fluctuating between two measures in 3/4 and three measures in 2/4 time. The first beat of the compás falls on the second beat of the first 3/4 measure in the series and the first accented beat falls on the first beat of the second 3/4 measure. The sixth, eight, and tenth accented beats fall on the first beats of the 2/4 measures in the series. The twelfth beat falls on the first beat of the next series beginning with a 3/4 measure. Notating the compás in this manner allows the guitarist a total grasp of the underlying structure of the music, something that is often lost in other notations I have studied for Soleares. A command of the compás is essential for the guitarist to be able to work with Flamenco singers and dancers. The Soleares is a stately dance that moves at a moderate pace, but often ends in a finale (macho por BulerÃas) that is more than twice as fast as the first sections of the dance. The finale also contains a key change from the Phrygian mode of the llamadas and corridas to the key of E major. The arrangement contains essential basic techniques for Flamenco guitar, the rasqueado, the legato with hammering on, the four finger tremolo that rips at the strings before a full chord with the thumb, alzapúa where the thumb strikes in triplets down, up, down in rapid succession, etc. Students should dedicate themselves to a close and careful study of the notation to gain full mastery of these techniques. The arrangement consists of several sections, the llamadas which are calls to the dancer to take the stage, corridas where the dancer moves in a circle executing various heel and toe steps together with hand, arm, and body gestures, and the macho where the dance ends in a storm of stamping and a fit of wild abandon. The corrida sections consist of melodies Flamencos call “falsetasâ€. One of these is simply a series of broken chords while another is a melody taken from a song called “Caña†that is a member of the Soleares family. The notation ends, as is prescribed for the dance, on the tenth beat of the last compás (the first beat of the last 2/4 measure in the last five measure series). The Soleares was the first palo my maestro Juan González “Triguito†introduced me to in my studies with him in Madrid in the late 1960’s and is considered to be the “mother†of true forms of Flamenco. The title of the arrangement is in celebration of the beautiful patios of Córdoba, home of the Flamenco palo Soleares.

Look no further than the Snowdrift Galop written by British composer, Charles Coote Jnr. It starts off just like Jingle Bells - and the Jingle Bells theme keeps coming back, but is it actually Jingle Bells? It also has a march-like theme and a lovely Trio section. All players get to play important melodic material in this arrangement.Snowdrift Galop was published in London in 1868 in a small collection of works by various composers. The opening theme is immediately recognisable as the popular holiday favourite, Jingle Bells, which was published 11 years earlier, yet the composer gives no reference or credit to the earlier work. Although the opening theme is the same as Jingle Bells, we get a stately march instead of the familiar Jingle Bells chorus. A lovely Trio introduces another new tune which is played by clarinet 3, then bass clarinet before returning to the opening section.Charles Coote Jnr (1831-1916) was a prolific English composer of popular music, including quadrilles, waltzes and galops. His music was written for society balls and subsequently published for piano, so that others could play them at local dances or in their ownhomes. He was the son of composer and bandmaster, Charles Coote (1809-1880). Coote Snr worked for the 6th Duke of Devonshire for 30 years, conducted his private orchestra, and was referred to by the Duke as his personal pianist.
