Trombone Quartet - Advanced - Composed by Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827). Arranged by Kevin Kombrowski. Romantic Period, Classical Period. Score, Set of Parts. 20 pages. Published by Cherry Classics Music
Beethoven's great chamber music is second to none, however, there are very few instances where the Trombone as an instrument can fit into the style of the music. With the Scherzo from String Quartet, Op. 18, No. 4, arranger Kevin Dombrowski has found the perfect fit. A quartet of trombonists at the advanced level will love performing this wonderful five minutes of music.

String Quartet String Quartet - Level 5 - SKU: A0.938389 Composed by Colin Bayliss. 20th Century,Contemporary. Score and parts. 46 pages. Colin Bayliss #6143. Published by Colin Bayliss (A0.938389). This was written in the summer of 2000 for the Lochrian Ensemble who were beginning to plan the recording of the complete string quartets. In the context of the other string quartets, here there is a reversion to the classical form, thus giving a balance between the classical quartets nos. 1, 2 and 6 and the kaleidoscopic quartets nos. 3, 4 and 5. It is in the conventional four movements:- 1. Allegro - This movement is in single subject sonata form using one figure. There is much use of quasimodal writing, especially using the Lochrian and Superlochrian modes, based both on E and C and the Mixolydian mode on E, giving a sort of tonality in which the constructional remainder notes of the serial row can be used sparingly. The pull towards a tonality of F is therefore established quickly. Each section is rounded off by the metamorphosis of the figure into a sentimental tune, but contrary to expectation, it evolves in the coda into something completely different - the opening of Beethoven's F minor string quartet Op. 95. 2. Scherzo - Wobblefunk and Tango After the last movement's ending has dispelled any seriousness, the stage is set for an outrageous scherzo. After the tango, the wobblefunk section is repeated bar by bar in reverse. Why not? It doesn't make any sense the right way round! Historical note: the term wobblefunk was invented by the composer's son Edmund to describe a type of subdued electronic crossover style music which he had written. In keeping with the family sense of humour, the thought of incorporating such a movement into a serious string quartet appealed to both parties. 3. Adagio - This movement is tonal and melodic, but introduced by a discordant motif which re-appears as if to remind the listener of their own mortality. The movement progresses through the cycle of fifths and then dissolves into a sinister coda related to the notes of the discord. 4. Allegro - This movement can be summed up as accepting life's problems but getting on with enjoying the good things as well - in the spirit of the last movement of Beethoven's string quartet Op.135. Must it be? It must be! Even if it includes a textural fugue! The ending, however, is decidedly not as clear-cut as Beethoven's ....... The Score and Parts are available on this site as separate downloads The sound sample is the third movement - performed by the Lochrian Ensemble The complete 6 string quartets performed by the Lochrian Ensemble are available on itunes: see: http://www.dwsolo.com/colinbayliss/ and - for this 6th quartet: https://itunes.apple.com/us/album/bayliss-string-quartet-no.-6/id573669350.

Schott Music - Digital #Q53952. Published by Schott Music - Digital (S9.Q53952). This is the first edition of the Scherzo per quartetto d’archi (P191). The central part of the Scherzo consists of a canon at the octave between the first violin (dux) and the viola (comes) at the distance of a quarter note.

String Quartet String Quartet - Level 4 - SKU: A0.938383 Composed by Colin Bayliss. 20th Century,Contemporary. Score and parts. 30 pages. Colin Bayliss #6121. Published by Colin Bayliss (A0.938383). (B33) was first written as Piano Sonata No.1 [B12] in late 1981. It was revised into a string quartet in January 1990. There are four movements, and all the thematic material, whether tonal, atonal or serial is derived from the music of the first seven bars. After this opening, the first movement is written in a straightforward sonata form, using a mixture of tonal and serial themes in constantly changing rhythms. The second movement Adagio also contrasts tonal and serial themes, while the third movement is a short scherzo and trio, with an atonal motif in the scherzo being treated in simple rhythms. A lyrical variation of the main theme of the slow movement is used for the trio, and develops further into a simple diatonic tune. The last movement is a kaleidoscopic treatment of the preceding thematic material, together with further variations and short contrapuntal passages, to give the effect of a rondo. The motif from the beginning of the whole work then returns as a coda to unify the quartet. The Score and Parts are available on this site as separate downloads The sound sample is the second movement - performed by the Lochrian Ensemble The complete 6 string quartets performed by the Lochrian Ensemble are available on itunes: see: http://www.dwsolo.com/colinbayliss/ and for this particular quartet: https://itunes.apple.com/us/album/colin-bayliss-string-quartet/id573541672.

(B82) was completed in November 1994. Allegro - another short scherzo 6. Was completed in April 1987, slightly revised for publication in 1994 with a few further revisions made for recording by the Lochrian Ensemble in 2007. The four movements follow the Classical pattern; the first movement, Sostenuto - allegro is followed by a scherzo (allegro molto, in 7/4), an adagio (also in 7/4) and a finale (allegro molto). The balance of the movements, however, differs in that the first and last movements are concertante movements for cello and first violin respectively; the argument of the third movement is largely made up of a love duet between the second violin and the viola, where the other two instruments have a mainly accompanying rôle, and only the scherzo has an equal balance between the forces. The Score and Parts are available on this site as separate downloads The sound sample is the second movement - performed by the Lochrian Ensemble The complete 6 string quartets performed by the Lochrian Ensemble are available on itunes: see: http://www.dwsolo.com/colinbayliss/ and for this quartet: https://itunes.apple.com/us/album/colin-bayliss-string-quartet/id573539633.

String Quartet String Quartet - Level 4 - SKU: A0.938424 Composed by Colin Bayliss. 20th Century. Score and parts. 46 pages. Colin Bayliss #11309. Published by Colin Bayliss (A0.938424). The work was completed on February 2nd 1970 and is the first piece to be retained by the composer after he had destroyed all his earlier compositions. The parts are available as a separate download. The following is taken from the catalogue of the composer's works:- The photocopy of the MS is marked String Quartet No. 1, but is not regarded by the composer as part of his mature string quartet writing. The MS itself was lost in a fire at the home of Col. Robert Tong, formerly Registrar of Queen Mary College, University of London. A typesetting was made in November 2000 as the photocopy had faded so badly. The composer's sketch books suggest that the movements were written in the order 3,2,4,1. 1. Allegro 2. Scherzo (Allegro energico) Trio I - tempo di menuetto Trio II - no tempo indicated - [andante] 3. Andante con moto 4. Allegro ma non troppo Composer's note:- As the above suggests, I originally had no intention of publishing this early piece. The recording by the Lochrian String Quartet of the six numbered quartets, however , together with sleeve notes admitting the existence of this work, prompted me into revising my opinion and allowing its publication, so that anyone wishing to study this first effort may do so. It shows certain traits that I was to develop in the six quartets and others that I was to discard, and therefore is of musicological interest. It also has a few good, albeit imitative, tunes! Duration: Approx. 25 mins. COLIN BAYLISS was born in Mansfield, Nottinghamshire in 1948. His life-long love of music led him to compose from an early age and he now has a catalogue of over a hundred works including two operas, four symphonies, six string quartets and many other pieces for most instrumental and chamber groupings, over seventy of them published. He is a member of the British Academy of Composers and Songwriters, the North West Composers' Association and the Performing Rights Society. String Quartet Cello,String Quartet,Viola,Violin - Level 5 - SKU: A0.534402 Composed by Jacques Leguerney. 20th Century,Standards. Score and parts. 125 pages. Musik Fabrik Music Publishing #3457403. Published by Musik Fabrik Music Publishing (A0.534402). Jacques Leguerney (1906-1997) composed two string quartets. The Premier Quatuor à cordes was composed in 1925 during Leguerneyâ??s private piano and composition study with French pianist Thérèse Cahen. His second quartet, subject of this publication by Musik Fabrik, was written between November 1947 and September 1948. The four movements are: I. Allegro moderato; II. Intermezzo; III. Scherzando; IV. Presto-Andantino. This work was, in part, Leguerneyâ??s response to the Premier Quatuor à cordes (inédit) by his colleague, Henri Sauguet. Leguerney stated in a personal interview with Patrick Choukroun (18 May 1989) that: â??I wrote it a bit in opposition to Sauguetâ??s Premier Quatuor. It seemed to me that his quartet was without interest: just scratchings! I wanted to express my way of looking at it from the classical viewpoint of the past: it is almost in the spirit of Mozart, except for the harmonic language, of course. In fact, I wanted to fight against everything that has been done to a quartet since Beethovenâ??s last ones.â? The premiere of the Quatuor à cordes en ré mineur was by the Quatuor Pro Arte at the Abbaye de Royaumont. Before this performance, Poulenc sent Leguerney the following note: â??Fortunate man for whom twelve strings are enough to charm people, I wish you good luck and respectfully embrace you.â? (Handwritten letter, Reims, 4 September 1959). Leguerney was appointed artistic director of the Lumen recording company in 1951, and remained in this position until 1959. He produced four recordings of his music, including the Quatuor Pro Arteâ??s recording of the Quatuor à cordes en ré mineur (1947-1948) (Lumen, LD 2.440, 1958). This disc won the Grand Prix du Disque de lâ??Académie Charles Cros on 13 March 1959. The Pro Arteâ??s members were Suzanne Plazonich, Violin I; Chantal Beylier, Violin II; Nicole Gendreau, Viola; and Micheline Burtin, Cello. Francis Poulenc wrote to Leguerney concerning this recording: â??It is very good Leguerney. Of course, frivolous as I am and shall always remain, it is the 2nd movement that I prefer. Between us, I am like you: I prefer the scherzos after the andantes; that way one is not forced to write a Finale allegro. Yours pleases me very much, in fact, so to my ears it is III-IV-I-II, in the order of pleasure.â? (Manuscript letter, Bagnols, 14 October 1959) The radio station France I broadcast the Quatuor with on 11 July 1959 on the program Schola of the series Concert de musique contemporaine, again with the Quatuor Pro Arte. An archive recording of this broadcast exists on magnetic tape. Critic Claude Rostand wrote: â??Jacques Leguerney does not seem to have looked for special innovations either in form or language. His basic thought seems especially to have written a quartet, that is to say on one hand to have used the four voices with elegance and originality, clarity and homogeneity (four-part writing seems to always have come naturally to him, even at the piano), and on the other hand to exploit all of the supple cushioning that can result from the caress of a bow on a string.â? Critic Emile Vuillermoz wrote: â??His only ambition is to expresses clear and affectionate melodic ideas, in a highly distinguished, elegant and refined language, meaning an homage, in the beginning of our century, to the trios of the greatest stylists of our time. In fact, it is from the vocabulary of Fauré, Debussy and Ravel that he takes his grammar and syntax and that with which he carries out with his this harmonic writing that is both supple and sparse, that is so congenial to the association of four string instruments. This quartet, whose first movement is of a rare perfection, is a delicate enchantment.â? The Musik Fabrik edition of the Quatuor à cordes en ré mineur is taken from a photocopy of the composerâ??s manuscript of the full score. We also had access to the quartet parts found in Leg.

String quartet - difficult - SKU: S9.Q778629 (Beethoven-Study IV). Composed by Joerg Widmann. Downloadable, Score and parts. Duration 35 minutes. Schott Music - Digital #Q778629. Published by Schott Music - Digital (S9.Q778629). The 9th String Quartet forms the penultimate work in my Beethoven Study quartet cycle. Chronologically, however, it was composed after the 10th Quartet Cavatina. And indeed, when composing it, it felt like the conclusion of the cycle. While the 6th Quartet Studie über Beethoven, which opened the cycle, was still in one movement, the 7th in two and the 8th in three, this 9th Quartet is a four-movement work. The sacred musical number 9 inspired me to create an especially substantial and intense composition. The second movement, a Scherzo, and the fourth movement Allegro alla marcia have become simply gigantic in their dimensions and in the density of information and impulses in comparison to their historical models. This 9th quartet has a particular focus on Beethoven’s still unattainable Quartet in C# minor op. 131. The radical nature and modernity of this work are still burning issues for us today. As in the other quartets in the cycle, I have been amazed at the new forms which have evolved during my preoccupation with their historical models and the extent of previously unknown spiritual depths in my own music during the process of composition. While my study of Beethoven's symphonies in the orchestral piece Con brio led to the discovery of new tonal possibilities for the orchestra (the timpani treatment!) and the juxtaposition of Beethoven's choral fantasy with the Latin Dies irae in my ARCHE oratorio made it possible to develop new theological and thematic points of focus, in the string quartet cycle it is above all the development and discovery of new forms that could only emerge through the study of Beethoven's quartets. Jörg Widmann.

String quartet - difficult - SKU: S9.Q771471 ‘hana no hanataba’. Composed by Julian Anderson. Downloadable. Duration 23 minutes. Schott Music - Digital #Q771471. Published by Schott Music - Digital (S9.Q771471). My 3rd String Quartet is in six contrasted movements. Certain musical figures recur across the work, but there are few themes as such. The main emphasis is on contrast of mood, texture, harmony, pacing and timing. Unlike many of my works this quartet had no extra-musical inspiration, and in principle should have no subtitle. Certain features already present in my music became more prominent in this new work: modes (limited collections of pitches) have always helped me to focus musical character, but here a sense of key note for each mode became much more pronounced, as did the difference between modes for each section of the work. A sort of hybrid key-system emerged (even with equivalents of major and minor) which is not normal tonality, nor does it aim to imitate it. Unlike tonality this key-system includes noises, extended performance techniques and intervals outside Western tuning as available resources. What I hope it does is to focus the listening experience onto different musical areas, to encourage a sense of both modulation from one area to another and to give the music a sense of goal. No conscious knowledge of this is needed when listening: the music should communicate directly on its own. Here, then, is this collection of six musical colours, related and unrelated, different yet belonging together, variable yet in a set order. Hence the subtitle, chosen both for both its sound and its sense: ‘hana no hanataba’ meaning, in Japanese, ‘bouquet of flowers’.A brief description:1)Moderately fast. Short droplets of sounds gather increasing momentum. 2)Very fast. Canons and bells at different speeds.3)Very slow – fast – very slow – very fast – very slow. The main slow movement and its main scherzo. An emphasis on non-tempered tunings and on inhaling and exhaling waves of sound. The slow sections feature florid melodic writing. In the exuberant scherzo competing duos and trios create imaginary folk music.4)Extremely fast/extremely slow. Open strings and harmonics fuse into a single string instrument – like a sort of large resonating Medieval tromba marina.5)Very fast. A variation on movement 2). Variation, Schoenberg told Cage, is just a sort of repetition ‘with some things changed and others not.’6)Slow - Very Fast - Fast – Slow. The opening calm harmonies and florid melodies evoke movement 3) in different music. The fast part features one overt theme: a fanfare-like call to attention which is subject to extensive development. There is much use of non-Western tuning. At its climax the music freezes into a frieze – a wall of sound standing in front of the audience with increasing obstinacy and certainty as the work grinds towards its cadence.

String Quartet String Quartet - Level 4 - SKU: A0.938385 Composed by Colin Bayliss. 20th Century,Contemporary. Score and parts. 33 pages. Colin Bayliss #6135. Published by Colin Bayliss (A0.938385). This work was written between January and March 1997. It has thirteen short continuous movements, one for each note of the tone row and a resolution of the row into an adagio movement in C major. The movements are written in a time signature beginning with one beat to a bar and ending in 13 beats to a bar until the final section of the last movement. The number of bars for each movement is in multiples of 13, then 14 and onwards to 25. The harmonic language is dictated by the combinations of notes in the original row combining with a row with its inversions and retrogrades begun from the first note of each new section. The sections may be briefly summarised as follows:- 1. Adagio A basic statement of the row with its inversion and retrograde 2. Con brio A rhythmic miniature scherzo and trio 3. Allegretto Dynamic contrasts using pizzicato and glissando 4. Andante piacevole e mesto Aduet between the violins with accompaniment from the viola and 'cello 5. Agitato An atmospheric spiccato section interrupted by foot-stamping 6. Andante languido A barcarolle-like section with passages of col legno 7. Allegro A rhythmic section contrasted by passages in harmonics 8. Tempo di tango presto The tango is apt to slip into many of the composer's pieces, even where nominally 12-tone, and is never remotely serious! 9. Andante pastorale Another atmospheric section but more relaxed 10. Allegro molto A scherzando section using rhythmic retrogrades 11. Allegretto The music begins to pull into feeling of tonality around C 12. Allegro moderato This process continues with tremolandi and glissandi searching for the way to a diatonic C major 13. Molto adagio - adagietto The last traces of atonality are wiped away and the work ends in an unashamed sense of quiet triumph The Score and Parts are available on this site as separate downloads The sound sample is the second movement - performed by the Lochrian Ensemble The complete 6 string quartets performed by the Lochrian Ensemble are available on itunes: see: http://www.dwsolo.com/colinbayliss/ For this 4th quartet see: https://itunes.apple.com/us/album/colin-bayliss-string-quartet/id585288847.
