(Psalm 13) was the first composition to come out of that challenge and my first notated instrumental piece. Out of the Depths (Psalm 130) was the second. (I still have yet to compose the third one.)I've written and discarded more pieces than I can count, but this  simple little piece has stuck with me.  I can see sparks in it of works that were to come later.  Simple and naive as it is, it still sounds like my own voice.

Trapped by something you can’t fully understand no matter how hard you try? Perhaps it’s something from our past that we never invited...or something we’ve missed in our closest relationships, maybe it’s just the dread we’ve felt waking up early in the morning to repeat the daily grind. We work hard to try and propel ourselves out of this nightmare, but we never seem to get totally free, in fact sometimes it feels like we’re just making ourselves feel worse by failing to overcome it yet again. This piece, ...a bridge a-way, exits within, represents that feedback loop, that stuckness. The piece came to me when I felt stuck in life by several things - old scars, old habits, crippling emotions. I had been wanting to write something in a minimalist style for the guitar for quite some time and the repetition found in so much minimalist music seemed like the obvious way for expressing this stuckness. There’s constant motion in the piece, just like when we try to take constant action in our lives to improve our circumstances. But all this motion never seems to get us anywhere new. We’re spinning our wheels…But one of the interesting things about great minimalist music is that it’s not merely about repetition. I don’t believe the greatest minimalists were concerned with having less stuff in their music for the sake of having less. Instead, what I think they more often aimed for was producing the biggest emotional impact that they could through the tiniest of changes. And if in your mind’s eye you zoom out from one of these minimalist masterworks and perceive it on a grand scale, you realize that despite all the seemingly redundant repetition in the moment the piece actually covers a huge distance because all those tiny changes add up.Likewise, in ...a bridge a-way, exits within, it seems like the performer can’t free himself from the territory of the first position on the guitar for the longest time. Even when he does venture higher up the instrument he’s always inextricably pulled back to the starting point. But small changes can have a profound impact.It doesn’t feel like we’re making headway whenever we’re having to crawl out of our skin - until, suddenly, when it’s all over. And you hear this towards the end of the piece, when there’s a sudden magnetic force that pulls the music from a low A to a high E-natural. From A to E, a bridge to exits eternal. The bridge has been found within, in the One I’ve put my trust in, because I can’t reach my eternal destiny on my own. This is ...a bridge a-way, exits within.

Inside, you will get a full score, as well as individual parts for each instrument. I tried to make sure that each instrument would get a part of the melody and would not be continuously stuck with a particular role (i.e. harmony, rhythm, etc.). That being said, the cello does read tenor clef right in the beginning of the piece (it's gets much easier, though), the melodic rhythms are very syncopated, and while the rhythms predominantly in violin 2 and viola aren't too difficult, they can get very repetitive. So, I would say that this arrangement is more aimed for an advanced-intermediate quartet, but don't let that stop you if you want to try it. Happy playing!

Many amateur guitarists and beginning students of guitar are ‘stuck in the first position’. The rest of the fretboard is ‘terra incognita’. They don’t know where the notes are and they don’t know how to get to them and use them in playing melodies. To help remedy this situation, I offer a collection of scales and exercises I have developed over the years that have helped me master the fretboard of the guitar and that I have used to warm up my left and right hands before practicing or playing proper pieces. Guitarists afraid to move up the fretboard miss out on all the tonal nuances that the guitar has to offer. They also often have undeveloped left hand technique with a little finger that flies around helplessly and uselessly. These scales and exercises will, if played regularly, put the little finger to good use and guide the left hand to orient to the fretboard properly, staying close to the fretboard with fingers that move as little and as efficiently as possible. They are also relaxing and fun to play around with. I read somewhere a while back that medical science had found that pianists were less likely to develop brain diseases. The scientists attributed this to the many hours pianists spend playing scales, as this is like a gentle brain massage. So scales are not only good warm up exercises for the fingers but also good warm-ups for the brain.The scale exercises written here in the keys of G and C should be played in different keys in higher positions on the fretboard. Students can try to see just how far up the neck they can go to reach the highest notes. After a while, what seemed challenging and strange will start to feel comfortable and familiar. Don’t hesitate to develop new variants of the scales when you grow tired of playing them as I propose here. Have fun playing and playing with the scales!The exercises often start in one position and move toward other higher or lower positions on the fretboard. When moving from one position to another, follow the suggested fingerings to utilise what is called a lead finger to move the hand to the next position. This will make the movement smooth and not interrupt the flow of the scale. In the end all movement should look and feel seamless and effortless.I have chosen scales in major keys I think are particularly good to play on the guitar. To practice a scale in a minor key, start the exercise in the related major key from the fundamental of the minor key, for example, to play an E minor scale start the G major exercise on an E and play from there. This is one way of creating new variants of these scales. Another way to vary the exercises is to play the scales in different time signatures or rhythms.I believe these exercises are particularly helpful for amateur guitarists who play in ensembles of different kinds, duos, trios, quartets, where the guitarist often only has one melodic line to play. Such melodies often sound much better played in higher positions where the guitar can be made to sing, rather than in the first position where the same tones, especially on open strings, often sound rather dull. From my own experience, I find that when I play a melody in a higher position using all the fingers of the left hand, the melody not only sounds better, the fingers remember the melody better.Â

Spirituals were birthed and rooted in the experience of chattel slavery in the United States—and arose out of, as Arthur C. Jones asserts, “deeply meaningful, archetypically human experiences, relevant not only to the specific circumstances of slavery but also to women and men struggling with issues of justice, freedom, and spiritual wholeness in all times and places.†The original text of Soon Ah Will Be Done is as follows: Soon ah will be done with the troubles of the world (repeat) Goin’ home to live with God No more weeping and a-wailing (repeat) Goin’ home to live with God I want t’ meet my mother (repeat) Goin’ home to live with God I want t’ meet my Jesus (repeat) Goin’ home to live with God When I sang this spiritual growing up, I was struck by both the withering sorrow and expectant hope throughout. The melody and emotion has stuck with me since. When approaching my own arrangement, I hoped to honor the voice of the original writers and their experience of slavery, and I also sought to extend a voice to people today who are suffering from oppression and discrimination. I hoped an appropriate way to honor the experience of the original writers might be to invite the contemporary listener to envision and commit to a better, more just world today—a world of inclusion, radical kindness, compassion, love, and grace—a world where we have the courage to champion the inherent dignity and value of all people, a world where we will be done with all the ways we deny a person’s worth. A world where “heaven has come to earth.†In this arrangement, spoken word is incorporated throughout, intended to heighten the intensity of the performance, and meant to give a sense of immediacy to the challenge for the choir and audience to work together for justice, equity, and wholeness. Spoken word has often been used as the language of protest—and I include it intentionally as a way of giving voice to the choir members (and listener)—where all can stand in solidarity against oppression and injustice. If desired, choir members are encouraged to write their own spoken word text that speaks to issues of inequity and injustice in their own communities. I am writing this program note not long after George Floyd was killed in Minneapolis, MN, on May 25, 2020. As a Minneapolis area resident for the past 25 years, I want to take a more active role in working towards justice in my community. All proceeds received from the sale and performance of Soon We Will Be Done will be directed to ISAIAH—a multi-racial, state-wide, nonpartisan coalition of faith communities fighting for racial and economic justice in Minnesota. It’s a terrific science fiction/horror movie set on a large spaceship, with a predatory creature who is hunting down the human crew one by one. In the interview, Scott talked about the fact that there were scenes he wanted to film and effects he wanted to use, but his small budget prevented him from doing so. Instead, he was forced to make do with limited time and materials. Alien became a hit, and Scott went on to direct blockbusters like Gladiator and Hannibal.What stuck with me was what Scott said about creativity. It is his opinion that the budgetary constraints under which he operated when making Alien forced him to explore ideas and methods he wouldn’t have otherwise considered. Even though he would later make movies with ten times the budget, he’s extremely proud of what he and his team did with far more limited resources.When I started writing My Shepherd Will Supply My Need, I decided to give myself a big constraint: I would only be allowed to use the white keys of the piano. This is very different for me; I usually throw in some juicy harmonies. It was an interesting process, and I have to say that I agree with Ridley Scott: limits spark creativity. I’m going to look for other ways to apply this principle.I did go over budget slightly, and used one black key. Every flock has its black sheep, right?

I asked Mercedes to listen to and name an early piano composition I wrote. Her reply was “Beyond Her Only Dreaming.” The original composition was ultimately scrapped, but the name stuck with me. It inspired the muses whispering in my haunted ear. I wrote five musical tone poems that were loosely based on a woman’s dream. During the creative process, I asked Mercedes to listen to the tones and use her imagination to create sketches for each section. Her spoken poetry powerfully frames a woman’s dreams, fears, desires, and hope for love. They blend seamlessly with the music and are so masterfully written that they create a picture frame to use as structure but leave the canvas blank. This allows the listener to also take part in this collaboration and paint their own visions of how they experience the music. J.F.B.Her Words I’m a dreamer and writer of words, but I love music. When John asked me to name his original musical piece, I was delighted. I had recently written a story based on Robert Chamber’s famed The King in Yellow collection and, due to the sound and feel of John’s piece, loosely named the composition after my short story. John took this title and created a brilliant new musical composition. After listening to it, I was influenced to create spoken- word pieces that match the emotion of the music while also hearkening back to the original short story. The piece you’ll hear contains poetry influenced by original music inspired by a short story based on a collection written in 1895. Time is a flat circle. There’s a beauty found where minds meet that no one person can achieve alone.   So, in search of that beauty, before I even started to work on this piece, I met with the students of Waukesha North High School at the end of their 2023 school year. And we talked. We talked about how life was going. The good and bad. The ups and downs. Things lost. Things found… They shared some laughs and even some tears… The conversations we had were unexpectedly poignant and stuck with me throughout the writing process.   School is a time of great change in our lives and often we are so focused on “getting through†that we don’t really stop to appreciate it until later. This piece celebrates that part of the process. The way we build onto ourselves- acknowledging and accepting that our experiences we have during this time, both good and bad, are crucial to our identity and our ability to move forward in life. They are the cornerstones of who we are and who we become… Inspired by these experiences we shared, I wrote this text. It’s about building a house. The “house†being our self.

Published by Scott Custer Jr (A0.1153691). My first complete concert band piece. It's been in the works for about 3 months. The early drafts of this piece were written in April/May and were then left to collect dust for months. I wrote it to experiment with melodic/harmonic minor scales and did not intend to finish the piece. Around the same time I wrote the early drafts of the piece, my high school band director asked if I wanted to write a piece for the concert band. I agreed and spent months working on different pieces of music, completing none of them. Around late October I stumbled across this looking through old pieces of music for some new ideas. I listened through it 3 or 4 times and decided to continue the piece. After spending roughly two months finishing the draft, and another month revising and adding parts, I had finally finished Trapped. When I started working on this piece with the intention of finishing it, I was at a difficult point in my life. I had recently come home from my rookie season of drum corps and was still transitioning back to the real world. The freedom of tour had been taken away from me, I had mentally matured a lot during the summer. While only 17 I felt like I was stuck with a bunch of kids. I had spent all summer with friends much older than me, learning a lot from them and taking inspiration from them in many ways. When I started this piece, I was conflicted with many thoughts and emotions. I was still under the impression that my peers in the music program hated me because of some of my actions last year. The girl from home I had been talking with all summer while I was gone, and hoped to start a relationship with, lied to me while I was gone about many things, causing me to remove them from my life. The last year and a half have involved many events like losing my best friend of 5 years because of, what I consider, an overreaction on my part; being used for my kindness; lied to; having secrets about me revealed behind my back by those I trusted; being a therapy friend; constant overthinking; as well as toxic friendships I didn’t want to leave because I gave them the benefit of the doubt. I felt trapped. I had spent so long trying to improve myself to become who I am today, and I still felt like crap. Even though I knew and promised myself I wouldn’t follow through, I was battling suicidal thoughts and I was in a severely depressive episode of my life. I wrote this piece to express the feeling of overthinking, being trapped in your mind, and the road to recovery. The constant back-and-forth battles with yourself, unsure of where to go and what to do next; feeling trapped. I hope that this piece connects and resonates with those of you in a similar position to what I was in, and I promise there is a way out and that life does get better. And with that, I present to you, Trapped.

And they got big, and I ain't talking about clams in general, I'm talking about each clam! Individually. I mean each one was a couple of million years old or older. So imagine they could have got bigger than this whole room. And when they get that big, God gives them little feet so that they could walk around easier. And when they get feet, they get dangerous. I'm talking about real dangerous. I ain't talking about sitting under the water waiting for you. I'm talking about coming after you.Imagine being on one of them boats coming over to discover America, like Columbus or something, standing there at night on watch, everyone else is either drunk or asleep. And you're watching for America and the boat's going up and down. And you don't like it anyhow but you gotta stand there and watch, for what? Only he knows, and he ain't watching. You hear the waves lapping against the side of the ship. The moon is going behind the clouds. You hear the pitter patter of little footprints on deck. ‘Is that you kids?’ It ain't! My god! It's this humongous, giant clam!Imagine those little feet coming on deck. A clam twice the size of the ship. Feet first. You're standing there shivering with fear, you grab one of these. This is a belaying pin. They used to have these stuck in the holes all around the ship… You probably didn't know what this is for; you probably had an idea, but you were wrong. They used to have these stuck in the holes all along the sides of the ship, everywhere. You wouldn't know what this is for unless you was that guy that night.I mean, you'd grab this out of the hole, run on over there, bam bam on them little feet! Back into the ocean would go a hurt, but not defeated, humongous, giant clam. Ready to strike again when opportunity was better.You know not even the coastal villages was safe from them big clams. You know them big clams had an inland range of about 15 miles. Think of that. I mean our early pioneers and the settlers built little houses all up and down the coast you know. A little inland and stuff like that and they didn't have houses like we got now, with bathrooms and stuff. They built little privies out back. And late at night, maybe a kid would have to go, and he'd go stomping out there in the moonlight. And all they'd hear for miles around...(loud clap/belch).... One less kid for America. One more smiling, smurking, humongous, giant clam.So Americans built forts. Them forts --you know—them pictures of them forts with the wooden points all around. You probably thought them points was for Indians but that's stupid! 'Cause Indians know about doors. But clams didn't. Even if a clam knew about a door, so what? A clam couldn't fit in a door. I mean, he'd come stomping up to a fort at night, put them feet on them points, jump back crying, tears coming out of them everywhere. But Americans couldn't live in forts forever. You couldn't just build one big fort around America. How would you go to the beach?So what they did was they formed groups of people. I mean they had groups of people all up and down the coast form these little alliances. Like up North it was call the Clamshell Alliance. And farther down South it was called the Catfish Alliance. They had these Alliances all up and down the coast defending themselves against these threatening monsters. These humongous giant clams. Andt hey'd go out there, if there was maybe fifteen of them they'd be singing songs in fifteen part harmony. And when one part disappeared, that's how they knew where the clam would be.Which is why Americans only sing in four part harmony to this very day. That proved to be too dangerous. See, what they did was they'd be singing these songs called Clam Chanties, and they'd have these big spears called clampoons. And they'd be walking up and down the beach and the method they eventually devised where they'd have this guy, the most strongest heavy duty true blue American, courageous type dude they could find and they'd have him out there walking up and down the beach by himself with other chicken dudes hiding behind the sand dunes somewhere.He'd be singing the verses. They'd be singing the chorus, and clams would hear 'em. And clams hate music. So clams would come out of the water and they'd come after this one guy. And all you'd see pretty soon was flying all over the sand flying up and down the beach manmanclamclammanmanclam manclamclamman up and down the beach going this way and that way up the hills in the water out of the water behind the trees everywhere. Finally the man would jump over a big sand dune, roll over the side, the clam would come over the dune, fall in the hole and fourteen guys would come out there and stab the shit out of him with their clampoons.That's the way it was. That was one way to deal with them. The other way was to weld two clams together. [I don't believe it. I'm losing it. Hey. What can you do. Another night shot to hell.] Hey, this was serious back then. This was very serious. I mean these songs now are just piddly folk songs. But back then these songs were controversial. These was radical, almost revolutionary songs. Because times was different and clams was a threat to America. That's right. So we want to sing this song tonight about the one last... You see what they did was there was one man, he was one of these men, his name will always be remembered, his name was Reuben Clamzo, and he was one of the last great clam men there ever was. He stuck the last clam stab. The last clampoon into the last clam that was ever seen on this continent. Knowing he would be out of work in an hour. He did it anyway so that you and me could go to the beach in relative safety. That's right. Made America safe for the likes of you and me. And so we sing this song in his memory. He went into whaling like most of them guys did and he got out of that, when he died. You know, clams was much more dangerous than whales. Clams can run in the water, on the water or on the ground, and they are so big sometimes that they can jump and they can spread their kinda shells and kinda almost fly like one of them flying squirrels.You could be standing there thinking that your perfectly safe and all of a sudden whop.... That's true... And so this is the song of this guy by the name of Reuben Clamzo and the song takes place right after he stabbed this clam and the clam was, going through this kinda death dance over on the side somewhere. The song starts there and he goes into whaling and takes you through the next...I sing the part of the guy on the beach by himself. I go like this: Poor old Reuben Clamzo and you go Clamzo Boys Clamzo. That's the part of the fourteen chicken dudes over on the other side. That's what they used to sing. They'd be calling these clams out of the water. Like taunting them making fun of them. Clams would get real mad and come out. Here we go. I want you to sing it in case you ever have an occasion to join such an alliance. You know some of these alliances are still around. Still defending America against things like them clams. If you ever wants to join one, now you have some historic background. So you know where these guys are coming from. It's not just some 60's movement or something, these things go back a long time.Notice the distinction you're going to have to make now between the first and easy Clamzo Boys Clamzo and the more complicated Clamzo Me Boys Clamzo. Stay serious! Folk songs are serious. That's what Pete Seeger told me. Arlo I only want to tell you one thing... Folk songs are serious. I said right. Let's do it in C for Clam...Iet's do it in B... For boy that's a big clam... Iet' s do it in G for Gee, I hope that big clam don't see me. Let's do it in F... For …he sees me. Let's do it back in A...for a clam is coming.
