'Stumbling Fingers' is an atonal piano solo approximately 2:17 in duration. Sometimes, I like to experiment with nontraditional composing methods. To create this piece, for example, I took the melodic rhythm of a well-known (public domain) work by another composer and changed each pitch using a twelve-sided die. I set the notes and C above middle C (C5) and then went up or down the scale in half-steps based on what I rolled. After a little tweaking, I added the accompaniment from another source (also well-known and in the public domain), 'Stumbling Fingers' is the end result.

In 1 John, we witness the Apostle (that Jesus loved) writing as the elder statesman of the faith in the last third of the 1st century. In chapter two, verse seven, John refers to the church as beloved and proceeds by telling them of a new commandment. He says (verses 9-11), Whoever loves his brother, abides in the light and there is no cause for stumbling. But whoever hates his brother is in the darkness, and does not know where he is going, because the darkness has blinded his eyes. From this text, John immediately segues into verses 12-14, to affirm for his followers that as far as they are concerned, there is no darkness in them for they are the children of the Light to whom he was earlier referring. John achieves this transition by employing yet another 1st century Hymn to Christ, which I have entitled, Through His Name. This anthem is an affirmation of the faith, first to the little children, then to the fathers, and then to the young men. What is very interesting is that the first stanza is written in the present tense (I am writing to you) but the second stanza, with very similar wording, is written in the past tense (I have written to you). It’s as if to say, you heard the Gospel message before, and you believed, and I am writing it to you again, so that you may continue to believe.

Although it’s in 3/4 it’s neither courante nor galliard, waltz nor minuet. It just is. Unusually for me, the chordal accompaniment is written for harpsichord (or any keyboard instrument), in order to get the full arpeggiation not possible on my octave mandola or bouzouki.The Western Heights, in Dover, used to be a really fun place to go; a barracks inter alia for a French invasion that never quite happened. Miles of tunnels built into a mountainside with rotten drawbridges, very steep stone staircases and plenty of rats. I used to climb inside and spend hours wandering around in the dark stumbling over debris, squeezing through narrow gaps, climbing walls. It’s been taken over now by various doers of good and made ‘safe’. I think you have to pay to get in. Back in the day one could be Indiana Jones for a while and have a truly great time.

This is a expressive, post-minimalist influenced composition, with flexible tempos and dynamics. This Piano Trio Passacaglia is the “junior†companion piece to my Cello Concerto Dunkle Saiten [Dark Strings], or more precisely to the concerto’s large-dimensional introductory section with the indication “Feierlich, schreitend†[solemnly, striding]. What in the Cello concerto then inescapably culminates in a catastrophe remains in this composition ostensibly largely conflict-free. This is in fact perhaps one of my most peaceful and conflict-free compositions; it consists of half an hour of almost exclusively tonal progressions. Here, passacaglia (stepping dance!) is taken literally: the step progressions themselves become the subject of the work. This also includes pausing, not being able to progress, feeling one’s way, stumbling and taking compulsive steps forward.As familiar as the harmonic surface of the structure appears, for me the natural adaptation of the musical flow was new to a similar degree. This is my attempt to produce a linear tonal band (a horizontal) exclusively with the aid of harmonic – i.e. vertical – progressions.- Jörg Widmann.
