Holst's 7-movement Suite, The Planets was written between 1914-16 and its first version was scored for two pianos except for the Neptune movement, which was written for organ alone. The music is the first ever composed with a fade-away ending using a womens' chorus. Later, Holst completed his orchestration of the 7-movement Suite, which has become one of the most popular works in the repertoire. Mr. Sauer has brilliantly scored this movement of about nine minutes in length for 14-part brass ensemble with Timpani and Glockenspiel. This concludes his arranging of the complete suite for Large Brass Ensemble. The entire 7-movement Suite is also available for sale as a complete set on our website. Instrumentation is for: 4 Trumpets in C 4 Horns in F 3 Trombones Euphonium, Tuba Timpani and Glockenspiel This music is appropriate for advanced performers.

It is light, flitting and scherzando in style. Mr. Sauer has used a very ingenious scoring technique for the brass to keep the music flowing for the very fast, long phrases used by the composer. • 4 minutes in length for advanced performers. These TWO SUITES were composed in response to a request form Heini Schneebeli, the musical director of ?TROMBONANZA 2017?. Santa Fe in Argentina is the backdrop for this exciting annual event involving many hundreds of student and professional players.
The FIRST SUITE has three movements and is intended for a trio of younger tenor trombonists working with a teacher on bass trombone who will add richness and depth to the ensemble sound.
It is my hope that this piece will encourage, entertain and challenge student players and provide useful concert material for use in the promotion of this unique and versatile instrument.

Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker is universally popular and has become one of his most famous compositions. The ballet tells the story of a young girl who receives a nutcracker (in the form of a soldier) for Christmas. She falls asleep and dreams that all the Christmas presents come to life. Since the music of the Suite is so familiar, there is hardly any need to offer any additional description beyond the titles of each movement: March, Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy, Russian Dance (Trepak), Arabian Dance (Coffee) Chinese Dance (Tea), Spanish Dance (Chocolate) and Waltz of the Flowers. This arrangement has been carefully edited and abridged to showcase the colors and dynamics of brass and organ. Your ensemble may perform just one movement, all 7, or any combination you wish. And, for the price, 7 movements is a real bargain!! Trumpets are asked to double on Flugelhorns (optional). The second movement uses the theme in retrograde inversion (backwards and upside down) to emulate the music of Gagaku. Gagaku literally translates as elegant music and is the ancient imperial court music of Japan. The third movement uses the theme in retrograde (simply backwards) to create a sarabande. Sarabandes are typically associated with the dance suites of the Baroque era but are said to have originated in Central and North America. The Sarabande was banned for a time in 16th century Spain for it’s lascivious nature. The final movement uses the original form of the theme combined with a traditional drumming pattern of the Ewe people of Togo, Benin, and Ghana, West Africa. I. Europe: An Enlightenment Fugue II.
