Woodwind Ensemble,Woodwind Quintet - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1404381 Composed by Johann Sebastian Bach. Arranged by James M. Guthrie. Baroque,Contest,Festival,Historic,Instructional,Standards. 14 pages. Jmsgu3 #987456. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.1404381). The historical context of Bach's BWV 812 French Suite No. 1 is rooted in its composition during a period of prolific creativity in Bach's life, around 1722-1725. These suites, including the French Suite No. 1, were crafted as part of a collection intended for teaching purposes within Bach's private circle, particularly to enhance the keyboard skills of his second wife, Anna Magdalena. The French Suites were written when Bach was newly married to Anna Magdalena, following the passing of his first wife, Maria Barbara. These suites were considered a wedding gift for Anna Magdalena. They were part of Bach's efforts to provide musical education to his wife and children from previous marriages. The suites blend French and German styles, featuring a series of dances in the same key, such as allemande, courante, sarabande, minuets, and gigue. Despite being labeled as French suites, Bach did not give them this title himself. The French Suites are known for their moderate difficulty level compared to Bach's other keyboard works, such as the English Suites.

Woodwind Ensemble,Woodwind Quartet Bassoon,Clarinet,Flute,Oboe - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.811817 Composed by Georg Philipp Telemann (1681 - 1767). Arranged by Pat Spence. Baroque,Concert,Contemporary,Graduation,Standards. 56 pages. Piper Publications #6518927. Published by Piper Publications (A0.811817). The Overture Suite was a form and style of music popular in the 17th and first half of the 18th centuries. The early suites consisted of sets of the popular dance movements at the time and would have been used to accompany dancing. The overture was a later addition - probably for more formal occasions - and enabled the composer to show off his skill before the dancing began. Telemann developed the form over the first half of the 18th century composing suites for a wide variety of instrumental combinations from groups of wind instruments for outside events, solo instruments with string orchestra, to string quartet, which was the original version of Overture Burlesque and one of the first string quartets.Instead of the usual dance titles, Telemann used characters associated with Scaramouche, a stock clown character - Harlequin the Joker, Columbine, Pierrot, Mezzetin en turc, the Narcissus of pantomime - and a pair of Menuets. The suite would have been staged and the music played robustly to suit the characters as they danced. Players of intermediate standard and above will have fun playing this. The suite is arranged for flute, oboe, clarinet and bassoon to play as a concert piece or as an accompaniment to a stage performance. The tempo indications are suggestions in parentheses ( ) as are the additional dynamic markings. Some additional cadential trills have been added without comment. All added slurs are shown with dashed lines with the exception of those in Menuet 2 which I feel are necessary because of the change from string to wind instruments. You are, of course, free to disagree.

Woodwind Ensemble,Woodwind Quartet - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1406743 Composed by Johann Sebastian Bach. Arranged by James M. Guthrie. Baroque,Chamber,Contest,Festival,Historic,Standards. 20 pages. Jmsgu3 #989498. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.1406743). The importance of Bach's French Suites lies in their unique blend of French and Italian styles despite the misleading title. These suites, composed between 1722 and 1725 for the clavier, showcase Bach's mastery in stylizing traditional dances like allemandes, courantes, sarabandes, and gigues. While named French Suites by later sources like Johann Nikolaus Forkel, they follow Italian conventions with some French influences. The suites offer a rich musical experience, bridging different European styles and serving as valuable teaching pieces. Despite the misleading title, Bach's French Suites are a testament to his compositional genius and continue to be cherished by musicians and audiences alike. The history behind Bach's French Suites is intertwined with a bittersweet period in Bach's life. In May 1720, Bach embarked on a trip, leaving his wife, Maria Barbara, and four children. Tragically, upon his return, he discovered that Maria Barbara had passed away. This loss led to a significant change in Bach's personal life as he became a single father mourning his wife. Despite this tragedy, Bach found love again with Anna Magdalena Wülcken, whom he married. As a gesture of affection and to cultivate her musical skills, Bach composed music for Anna Magdalena, including what would later become the French Suites. These suites were likely performed at court and reflected the couple's intimate musical companionship. The French Suites were not published during Bach's lifetime, possibly because he did not deem it challenging enough. Today, these suites offer an accessible path to Bach's music and are cherished for their stylized dance movements inspired by French and Italian forms.

Today, these suites offer an accessible path to Bach's music and are cherished for their stylized dance movements inspired by French and Italian forms.

Baroque,Concert,Graduation,Standards,Wedding. 18 pages. Piper Publications #6087211. Published by Piper Publications (A0.811767). Although this is an arrangement (the original was written for 2 violins & cello continuo), it has beenedited as an urtext edition so that players of modern instruments can perform it in an authentic style. All editings are clearly indicated in parentheses ( ) or dashed lines. Sections of all parts have beentransposed up an octave to accommodate the ranges of the wind instruments. Players would have added ornaments e.g. mordants and trills especially during the repeats. Some of the more obvious have been indicated in parentheses. The only dynamic indications are in the Gigue for the final 2 bars/measures of each section. The convention of playing the repeated sections in a contrasting dynamic (loud - soft or soft - loud) would have sufficed for the other movements. Slurs would have been added at the discretion of the players especially in the slow movements. The six movements, Sonata, Gavotte, Treza, Aria, Saraband & Gigue are suitable for players of advanced intermediate standard and above. The clarinet part could be played on a bass clarinet.Piper Publications PPS254Bwww.piperpublications.co.uk

Baroque,Chamber,Contest,Festival,Historic,Standards. 110 pages. Jmsgu3 #1019854. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.1439906). BACH: Partita No. 4 BWV 828 Contents: Overture, Allemande, Courante, Aria, Sarabande, Menuet, Gigue. Bach's Partita No. 4 in D major, BWV 828, is an essential work for several reasons: It is part of Bach's Clavier-Übung I, a collection of keyboard suites that he published in the last 25 years of his life as a musical testament to convey his vision of music-making and composing. Unlike his earlier English and French suites, the Partitas in this collection are more severe, focusing on polyphonic structures that actively involve both the listener and performer. The Partita consists of seven movements, all in the key of D major, structured around Renaissance dance forms such as the allemande, courante, sarabande, minuet, and gigue. This instrumentation captures both the original medium for these dance sets as well as the Baroque style of Bach. Bach was well aware of his abilities as a composer, and he deliberately published these works with future generations in mind. The Partitas represent Bach's mature approach to keyboard composition, where he was less interested in dance rhythms and more focused on creating complex polyphonic structures. Overall, Partita No. 4 is an essential work in Bach's keyboard oeuvre, as it showcases his mastery of form and counterpoint while also reflecting his desire to create music that would endure.

Dr. Lydia Consilvio’s arrangement of Johann Sebastian Bach’s keyboard Partita No. 4 in D Major (BWV 828) presents a fresh expression of Bach’s keyboard suite, giving listeners a new way to hear and appreciate this delightful work. Drawing upon the Bach-Gesellschaft edition, Consilvio’s reimagination for two oboes, English horn, and bassoon stays true to the original keyboard score and thoughtfully contributes to the double reed repertoire. This adaptation for small wind ensemble naturally creates complementary and flexible dynamics that allow sonorities to emerge in a manner not possible on the harpsichord or piano—enhancing the phrasing and coloristic possibilities inherent in the music. Consilvio’s distribution of melodic material clearly highlights Bach’s use of voices (usually two or three within a single line) through a conversational woodwind dialogue.Notably, Bach’s keyboard Partita No. 4 is comprised of movements based on Renaissance dance forms—allemande, courante, sarabande, menuet and gigue—each influenced by the step-pattern of that specific dance. These Renaissance dances were typically accompanied by families of like instruments in small ensembles called “consorts;†fittingly, the instrumentation of this arrangement captures both the original medium for the dance sets, and the Baroque taste and style of Johann Sebastian Bach.

Small Ensemble Bassoon,Clarinet,Flute,Horn,Oboe - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.811816 Composed by Georg Philipp Telemann (1681 - 1767). Arranged by Pat Spence. Baroque,Concert,Graduation,Standards. Score and parts. 38 pages. Piper Publications #6509201. Published by Piper Publications (A0.811816). This six movement suite was composed between 1700 and 1750 - most likely near to the beginning of the 18th century when Telemann was using older style titles for the 6 movements - Overture, Chasse, Menuet, La Toye, Sarabande and Loure. Telemann did not indicate any dynamics, instead relying on contrasting pairs of players and the full ensemble. Advanced intermediate players will enjoy the well contrasted, mostly lively movements. Horn players may prefer to transpose some passages down an octave. Some trills have been added and dashed slurs to match the few indicated in the original set of parts. The Suite is very likely to have been performed at outside and inside events and the mode of performance adapted accordingly.

Small Ensemble Bassoon,Clarinet,Flute,Horn,Oboe - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.889444 Composed by Johann Sebastian Bach. Arranged by Luis Anjos Teixeira. Baroque,Concert,Standards. Score and parts. 12 pages. Luis Anjos Teixeira #5297057. Published by Luis Anjos Teixeira (A0.889444). I Had Much Grief, Cantata BWV 21. „Ich hatte viel Bekümmernis, BWV 21. „Sinfonia This work marks a transition between motet style on biblical and hymn text to operatic recitatives and arias on contemporary poetry. Bach catalogued the work as „e per ogni tempo „and for all times, indicating that due to its general theme, the cantata is suited for any occasion. With its distinctive gesture of descent and the plaintive lines of the oboe and violin, the Sinfonia, held in dark minor, sets a tone of pain that is characteristic of the cantata. With its emotional depth and formal wealth, the cantata I had much grief is almost a solitaire in Bach's church music. Performed in Weimar in 1714 and later rearranged several times, it is also suitable as a compositional business card due to its high standards and its shape, which is representative of various types of sentences, and could therefore be related to Bach's application. Bach performed the cantata on 17 June 1714, as his fourth work in a series of monthly cantatas for the Weimar court which came with his promotion to concert master. The Work was transposed to D minor during the Köthen years, and used in November 1720 for a performance in Hamburg to apply for the position as organist at St. Jacobi. As Thomaskantor in Leipzig, Bach performed the cantata again on his third Sunday in office on 13 June 1723. For this performance, he also changed the instrumentation, adding „for example four trombones to double the voices in the fifth stanza of the hymn. This version was used in several revivals during Bach's lifetime and is mostly performed today. From the plaintive sinfonia to the arias and duets touching in their pain and charm to the speaking rhythmic psalm and chorus choirs, a development arc spans that transforms suffering and grief into consolation and trust and culminates in an apotheosis reminiscent of Handel of the victorious lamb, Hardly ever has Bach put the process of a relentless self-questioning and spiritual healing as convincingly as here. This arrangement of the sinfonia is intended for modern instruments. The original score was translated into modern music literature standards thus simplifying the approach and helping to understand the legacy of baroque music in our modern times. A few embellishments and interpretation symbols where added thus mostly shortening the length of some notes. Some „fortes and „pianos are also included. The arrangement is absolutely faithful to Bach`s versions, not adding or omitting any notes from the original sources. P.S.- The score was written on Finale. The sound file was produced with samplers from Garritan, merely as an audio support for the presentation of the score. Thank you very much for taking your time to read this text and to listen to the file. I hope you enjoy the music. TELEMANN: TRIO IN E MINOR TWV 43:e2 for flute, clarinet & bassoon or cello

(+)
Small Ensemble Bassoon,Cello,Clarinet,Flute - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.811819 Composed by Georg Philipp Telemann (1681 - 1767). Arranged by Pat Spence. Baroque,Concert,Graduation,Holiday,Wedding. Score and parts. 36 pages. Piper Publications #6536333. Published by Piper Publications (A0.811819). This Trio Sonata was published in Hamburg by Telemann in 1733 in the third volume of his Tafelmusik. The original was scored for flute, violin, cello and continuo. By 1733 the use of the continuo playing from a figured bass supported by a cello was falling out of use. In this piece, the use of the cello as a solo instrument effectively made the inclusion of the continuo redundant. In making this arrangement for flute, clarinet & bassoon or cello I have not included the continuo. Without the continuo, the Trio - still firmly entrenched in the Baroque style - closely resembles the three part Inventions of Telemann’s contemporary, J. S. Bach or the three part flute sonatas in Eb and G minor originally attributed to him but now considered to be the work of his son C.P.E. Bach. A set of 6 Quatuors ou Trios by Telemann clearly makes the continuo part optional. The arrangement is edited so that the style is true to the original. All edited phrasings (generally more suited to wind instruments) are shown using dashed lines. Telemann did not indicate any dynamics and none have been added. It is notable that Telemann developed his musical material throughout each movement and there are no repeated sections in this piece. There are four movements, Adagio, Allegro, Dolce and Allegro. The three parts are intended for players of equal accomplishment to delight their audiences.
