Blues and jazz master composer Maceo Pinkard's Anti-Loafin' Blues is a slow, grinding blues number. This classic blues number was written toward the end of World War I as a patriotic song, extolling men who had qualified for draft exemptions on the basis of supporting a dependent family to be sure to provide that support. Ultimately sympathy for men supporting dependent families waned and in 1943 this exemption class was retired. Arranged for brass quintet (two Bb trumpets, French horn, trombone, and tuba). De facto Anthems of the Confederate States of America ''I Wish I Was in Dixie & Taps''- ''God Save the South No. 1'' - The Bonnie Blue Flag, ''God Save the South No. 2'', arranged for Brass Quintet & Percussion.The Confederate States of America (also referred to as The Confederacy or simply The South) had, like the United States at the time, several patriotic songs in use which could have been considered anthems, like Dixie, The Bonnie Blue Flag, and God Save the South, none of which were officially declared (possibly because declaring an official anthem wasn’t as important to a new nation then as it is now). God Save the South does have more of an anthemaic quality in the music and lyrics, and several publications of the song refer to it as a (or the) anthem, and was also the first song to be published in the Confederacy (which was subsequently published in at least nine editions).God Save the South was written by George H. Miles under the pseudonym Earnest Halphin, soon after the war started. Miles was a Marylander, a state that did not officially secede and join the confederacy, but, being a border state, had several citizens with sympathies for the south. An interesting thing to note about the song is the reference to George Washington (the first president of the United States) in the song’s fifth verse. Apparently, the author of the song meant to tie in Washington’s stance as a rebel against the British in the American revolution with the South’s rebellion against the northern United States in the civil war.The music was written by C. W. A. Ellerbock, but another tune by C. T. De Cœniél was also popular at the time as well. It is sympathetic to the original music and should be easily accessible for intermediate to advanced players. Parts are also included for non standard Brass Band instruments such as Tenor Horn in Eb, Euph/Trom in treble clef, plus Eb and Bb Bass also in treble clef. All parts are written with consideration of typical range and technique. Some ensembles might prefer to opt for Trumpet 1 in Eb rather than 2 trumpets in Bb. There is also an optional percussion part on Timpani (G & D) that can easily be played on old fashioned hand tuned instruments, and will lend a bit more gravitas to any performance. The piece is very musically satisfying to play and will sit well on any concert or recital programme. The duration of the piece is about 4:50 minutes. The PDF is 45 pages long (A4 portrait) containing a full score and parts. Printing guidance - Score (pages1-24 print A4 double sided), all parts p25-45 (with the exception of Timpani p45) are designed to fit 2 x A4 pages on A3). The Duke of Alva's entry into Brussels from The Pacification of Ghent, duration : 2 min music : Peter Benoit arr. : Marc Goris Peter Benoit composed music based on the historical drama with the title 'De Pacificatie van Gent' by Emiel Van Goethem. Because of the combination of drama and music he defined the piece as a lyrical drama. He completed The Pacification of Ghent on 11 July 1876, the world premiere happening on 3 September at the Ghent Municipal Theatre. On 8 November 1576 a treaty was proclaimed from the balcony of the city hall in Ghent between the different regions of the southern and the northern Netherlands. This Pacification of Ghent occurred after the revolt against the Spanish occupation of Philip the Second and was the great ideal of William of Orange: he was striving for unity in the seventeen provinces in the Netherlands as well as for freedom of religion. Furthermore the treaty stipulated that the Spanish troops were to be removed from the Netherlands. Although this treaty was observed for only three years, the Pacification was embellished with a mythical aura in the Flanders of the 19th century. King Philip II sent the Duke of Alva to Brussels on 22 August 1567, at the head of a powerful army. On arrival, Alva replaced Margaret of Parma, the sister of the Spanish king, as head of the civil jurisdiction. He decided that the local nobility was in open rebellion against the king and supported the new Protestant teachings, heresy in his view. A few days later, on 5 September 1567, Alva established the Council of Troubles, popularly known in the Netherlands as the Court of Blood, to prosecute those responsible for the riots of 1566, especially those who were deemed heretics. Alba also targeted the local Catholic nobility, who favoured dialogue and opposed outside intervention. Two of the three heads of the Flemish nobility, the Count of Egmont, a Catholic General for Philip II, who had led the cavalry that defeated the French at the Battle of San Quentin, and Philip de Montmorency, Count of Horn, were arrested. The court sentenced both counts to death. The Major of Antwerpen, Anthony van Stralen, Lord of Merksem and Jan van Casembroot were other famous victims of the bloody repression, along with a large group of other heretics. The condemned persons were executed on 5 June 1568 in the Town Hall Square in Brussels. Alva had little confidence in Flemish justice, which he perceived as sympathetic to the defendants, and witnessed the executions in person.

When Louis Armstrong sang and played ‘Azalea’ with Duke Ellington in 1963, it was a union of two of the greatest and best known proponents of Jazz. Although both champions of Jazz’s African roots, they forged quite contrasting career paths and styles. Nevertheless, Louis’ inimitable larger than life talent was sympathetically supported by the Duke’s often idiosyncratic chord voicings. Although this arrangement is a feature for Trumpet, the notated Rhythm Section could also form the basis for a vocal version. It is at a very achievable level for School and University bands as well as being edited for ease of sight reading on gigs. Print normally on A4 paper – Score will come out as Landscape and parts as Portrait.
