Tommie Wright (1919 - 2014) was an American pianist and long-time professor at Florida State University where in 1950 he set to music a poem by student Doug Alley to create the FSU Fight Song, the theme of which is the basis for this set of variations for solo guitar.The audio file (Listen) offers the 2nd (Waltz) and 7th (Swing) variations, while the video (Watch) is the 1st variation, where the theme is in the bass.Although the printed order is appropriate, the variations might be performed in any order, or in groupings of three, four, or more. Drea's Accordes is an arrangement of a solo guitar piece, Air in the Dorian Mode, from my set of Diatonic Pieces where no accidentals are employed other than in the key signature. The Air has a distinctive Renaissance character. The arrangement was created to serve as incidental music for a production of MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING by the Southern Shakespeare Company in Cascades Park in Tallahassee, FL in May of 2022. The title Drea's Accordes is in part a reference to my wife who played the violin part in that production, and in part a bit of word-play on Drewrie's Accordes, a quasi-famous Elizabethan lute duet. The performers on the audio file are Alexis Finet, flute; Andrea Stanley, violin, and Stephen Hodges, guitar.TS Contact: tstanley@fsu.edu.

The 3 ideas are woven into a fabric that is sometimes rough and scratchy, sometimes smooth and silky. The audio sample is a recording from 2007 of the extraordinary Duo46. It was written in 1980 for the wonderful violinist, David Brown, who died much too soon, and to whom it is dedicated. Published by Ted Stanley (A0.1456676). Bach presented this music in at least two versions. It opens the Cantata, BWV 156, as a Sinfonia in F played by oboe and strings. It also appears in Ab in the Harpsichord Concerto (BWV 1056) where the string accompaniment is, interestingly, all pizzicato. There is speculation of a lost Violin Concerto in G minor where this movement would have been set in Bb.I have set it in A, mostly due to my guitar instincts, but violinists seem to prefer it in Bb.
