River Music is a fun and accessible piece that has received much positive feedback in the clarinet world and has been performed many times, including at the International Clarinet Association's ClarinetFest. It is an approximately 8 minute piece for two Bb clarinets and bass clarinet that would be equally at home on an environmental-themed concert or any other type of program. It is a relatively advanced piece but has been performed by high school students. River Music was written for Clarinets for Conservation.Program Note: River Music was inspired by my time one summer spent on the Chattahoochee River and at the Chattahoochee Nature Center near Atlanta, Georgia. I have always had a connection to bodies of water, having spent many summers and weekends at the lake by my grandparents’ house in New York. While sometimes I feel like an outsider as a New Yorker living in the South, as soon as I got on the river, canoeing down the Chattahoochee, I felt at home again. Something about the river reminds me of my childhood on Lake Peekskill, and River Music was partially inspired by that connection.Once I started writing the piece, it took on a life of its own, as water and nature (and composing) often does. One reason I’ve always felt strongly about environmentalism and protecting our natural environment is that all of it – the trees, the earth, the rivers, the lakes – has been here long before we came along and started messing it up, and it will (hopefully) be here long after we’re gone, as long as we make sure to protect these natural spaces and wilderness areas. I often think about how much trees have seen, and as I wrote this piece I started thinking about how much the river has seen too. I hear stories in River Music, and to me it’s the river telling us some, though certainly nowhere near all, of its stories.Perhaps River Music will take you, the listener, on a journey down the river-not just through space, but through time. You might hear some of the same stories I hear. Or you may not. Lullaby & Fugue, composed by Aris Antoniades.This piece was commissioned by the Sforzando Composers' Collective for the New Asia Chamber Music Society of New York, and was premiered on August 4th, 2017 at the Riverside Church in NYC.When I was presented with the challenge of composing a work combining traditional Chinese instruments with conventional Western instruments, I was quite intrigued: merging different sound-worlds has always been a strong compositional interest of mine. I am fascinated by folk music and, being born and raised on the Mediterranean island of Cyprus, much of my music is greatly influenced by my Greek cultural heritage. This piece is no different: I’ve attempted to use the enchanting sound of the Chinese Dulcimer in a way that reminds me of my own home.Lullaby and Fugue is a work inspired by the magical art of story telling. I still remember many of the bedtime stories my grandparents used to tell me when I was young. Their stories were not just entertaining, but also didactic: I follow many of their teachings to this very day, and I believe that these stories have played a vital role in shaping my character. The Lullaby portrays the soothing aspect of a bedtime story, whilst the Fugue represents the hidden, ‘cerebral’ aspect. I would like to thank my friends at the Sforzando Composers Collective for this great opportunity and all of the performers for their time and dedication. Additionally, I would like to thank my mentor, Dr. J. Mark Stambaugh for helping me discover the true magic of counterpoint, back in college. Published by EAMUSIC (A0.1283414). Obelisk is a work that was built as a response to the atrocious events happening in the war between Russia and Ukraine. As a composer who was born in Ukraine, I felt very deeply for the hardships of the people of my country and this work is a direct emotional response to the images I see and stories I hear. The central part of the work features pre-recorded interviews with some of the Ukrainian civilians telling their harrowing stories of loss, struggles, and fight for survival.  When I was a child, my parents made the difficult decision to leave the country due to the beginning of another war Russia’s Putin started in Chechnya and my parents knew - one day he would be coming for Ukraine. As someone who immigrated to Canada at a young age, I experienced all the difficulties associated with finding new life in a new country. I saw the struggles of my parents and now I see the struggles being experienced by people fleeing Ukraine.  Throughout the work you will hear the sonic accompaniment to the pain and suffering that Ukrainians undergo on daily basis, you will hear their voices and see images of the brutality committed against the people of Ukraine. This is a heavy work to experience, but as an artist I feel it is only appropriate to raise awareness around the issue and show the people the horrors going on in the world.    The title of the work was inspired by the famous monument erected in 2001 to mark the occasion of the 10thanniversary of Ukraine’s Independence from the Soviet Union. At that point it appropriately replaced the monument of Vladimir Lenin. Towering on top of Kyiv’s Independence Square (famously known as Maidan) at 200 feet, this obelisk celebrates the nature of the Ukrainian independent spirit and directly reflects my ideas through this musical composition with the hope that the powerful Ukrainian nation will prevail over its enemy once again.  This PDF includes Score and Parts.

When I was four years old my family lived in Oregon and our family would go camping with several other families at Shasta Lake in California. Some of the most vivid memories I have from those trips involve riding in our boat (we named it Whoops Wow). I remember riding on the bow of the boat and finding that to be a thrilling and slightly terrifying experience at the time. I gave myself the task of telling the story of this experience through music for concert band. I sincerely hope you enjoy reliving this experience with me. Shane Vickery.

Song Lyrics The Lyricist, Ms. Jackaleen Justice, truly achieved success in the crafting of an original song that really maximize the emotional notes of this music piece. She desired to exploit this song’s best emotional states through the lyrics of this song. With inspiration from her own life stories, she had much success in arriving at a piece of musical perfection.
