Assignments are included according to the quantity of ringers, and the piece is Level 2 when played with seven or eight ringers. This piece may also be performed by four- or six- in-hand ensembles without tables.Combining flowing lines with block chords, this arrangement of the familiar hymn tune is reminiscent of a music box. The melody is played both in the bass and the treble lines, and the easy rhythms never advance beyond the eighth note value. Every ringer is kept busy with lots of ringing, LV, some shakes, and minimal accidentals. There are a two gathering points where the ringers regain those who are lost or no longer together with the group's rhythm.On Jordan's stormy banks I stand, and cast a wishful eyeTo Canaan's fair and happy land, where my possession lie.I am bound for the promised land. Lullaby of Birdland is a jazz standard and popular song composed by George Shearing with lyrics by George David Weiss George Shearing wrote Lullaby of Birdland in 1952 for Morris Levy, the owner of the New York jazz club Birdland. Levy had got in touch with Shearing and explained that he'd started a regular Birdland-sponsored disk jockey show, and he wanted Shearing to record a theme which was to be played every hour on the hour. Levy originally wanted his own music to be recorded, but Shearing insisted he couldn't relate very well with it and wanted to compose his own music. They compromised by sharing the rights of the song; the composer's rights went to Shearing, and the publishing rights went to Levy.

I want to cross over into camp ground. The River Jordan is not in fact very deep, nor is it very wide. However, the longing to cross over it into camp ground in the promised land is very deep indeed! Based on the biblical story of Moses and the tribes of Israel wandering in the desert for forty years, this song is about exile and yearning for somewhere to belong. It applies to everyone, not just to the African-Americans who first sang this song, with their own history of heartache over so many centuries. Anyone who feels alienated by life and who is searching for inner peace is invited to respond to its soulfulness. Surprisingly - says the song - there are those who don't want to go to that gospel feast. But the song just continues its own search for the promised peace, convinced that the answer lies deep within us, perhaps across our own, personal deep river. The old African-American Spiritual Deep River is here set for piano solo in a relatively straightforward arrangement, based on the arranger's own barbershop quartet setting of the same song. It is to be played soulfully!

The opening’s atmospheric and mysterious tone suggests a quiet mist over tranquil water, reflecting the trail of slaves through the Great Dismal Swamp in Virginia escaping captivity. The chorus is used here as tonal color while the organ moves slowly beneath as a winding, rippling river. As this ends, the music breaks into a faster motive utilizing an underlying mixed meter. With the words “Oh don’t you want to go…,†the phrases become shorter and more urgent. As the chorus proclaims “That promised land...,†the work comes to an animated climax, the organ then emerging as a solo, dancing and finally growing quieter to the choral entrance at “where all is peace.†The congregation enters singing the traditional melody while three part women’s voices add a harmonic descant commentary. Finally, returning to the opening mysterioso style, the congregation sings “I want to cross over into campground.†Duration: 5:00.
