Published by Stephanie Daige (A0.796870). This little fugue is one of Bach's most famous and beloved organ works. Re-imagined for double reed choir, it is a challenging and fun setting for this fugue. The different instruments take turns entering with the subject of the fugue, and interplay back and forth with the other instruments. The timbres of the different instruments adds a whole new textural dimension to this already fascinating work by J.S. Bach. I considered the need to breathe for each of these wind instruments, which obviously wasn't an issue for the original version intended for organ. This piece would be appropriate for advanced high school students, college students, or professionals. It would do well in a chamber music concert, in a church, or between acts of a larger ensemble concert, perhaps in another location of the auditorium while a (quiet!) set change is taking place. It would also work well as prelude or lobby music. The duration is just over three minutes (or longer if you prefer to take it slower). Each measure is numbered individually for convenience during rehearsals. I hope you will enjoy performing this piece as much as I have enjoyed arranging it! Published by Gary Friedman (A0.889873). There are 3 movements. Sarabande, March, and Fugue, ranging from 3 to 5 minutes in duration. The Sarabande is serious and melodic, the March is cute, and the Fugue is an orchestrated version of my Fugue for Four Winds. You can get some idea of the sound of Sarabande and March by listening to the sound clips of the versions of them in my Seven Easy Melodies for Oboe with Piano Accompaniment, either in SheetMusicPlus or on my website, www.garyfriedmanmusic.net. The original Fugue for Four Winds may also be heard in these two places. Suitable for chamber orchestra. The Sarabande instruments are 2 each of flute, oboe, clarinet in A, bassoon, and horn, plus strings. In the March a trumpet (which has a nice short solo) and snare drum and triangle are added. In the Fugue, oboe 2 becomes English horn and a second trumpet is added. There are also optional parts in the Fugue for trombone, tuba, which can be covered by the bassoons, and for bells. Year: 2000.

From the composer's program notes included with this purchase:I have taken Schubert’s famous setting and arranged it in a set of musical homages to other composers. I have also included Schubert’s original theme, transposed down to F, and I would recommend playing it twice in the beginning to give your audience a good idea of it.For most of the pieces, I tried to capture the composer’s overall style; however, there are a few particular pieces that are either quoted or used as the stylistic basis, as follows: Mozart - I based this variation, stylistically, on Piano Concerto No. 21 in C major (K.467), specifically movement two (Andante), as well as some of his earliest childhood piano compositions. Symphony 40 in G minor (K.550) is quoted rhythmically. Strauss, Jr. - For inspiration, I used Du und Du, Op. 367, a waltz that is derived from various parts of his beloved operetta, Die Fledermaus. I quoted rhythms from this, as well as from Frühlingsstimmen, Op. 410. Joplin - I didn’t base this on any particular piece of Joplin’s; I tried to include elements that are common in his rags (a short introduction, arpeggiated diminished seventh chords, chromaticism, syncopation over a boom-chuck). Perhaps the best advice comes from Joplin himself: Don’t play this piece fast. It is never right to play ragtime fast. Porter - I had to include an offering from the Great American Songbook! Frank Sinatra recorded several of Porter’s well-known tunes in the 1940s, such as Easy To Love, Night and Day, and I Love You; his renditions of these songs are heavy on the schmaltz and sentimentality, which is exactly what I was trying to achieve in this variation.Bach - The minor variation! I had Fugue in G minor, BWV 578 (Little Fugue) in mind when writing this.der Jodelkönig - As Heidenröslein is a strophic, folk-songesque German piece, I thought it fitting to end the variations with an imitation of traditional Alpine yodeling. It is named in honor of Franzl Lang, the Yodelking.

Published by Vessela Stoyanova (A0.1201464). “Mountain Goats and Other Creatures†was Commissioned by Rachel Jayson and the Lexington High School Symphony Orchestra.It was inspired by the folk music of my native land of Bulgaria, informed by my experience as a rock musician, reimagined through the lense of my place inside of a community of like-minded artists and musicians, where I have made my real home today. The first movement - Mountain Goats - is a sort of celebration of renewal, promise, and hope. It represents the tenacious will of grass growing through the snow of early spring, the powerful longing for human connection, the warmth of the sun against your skin on a bright chilly day. It carries both the pristine optimism of youth, and the nervous energy of trying something for the first time. The second movement - Samodivi - in contrast is dark, heavy and full of passion and desire. According to Balkan myths, Samodivi are gorgeous nymphs who live in the woods and often seduce men with their beautiful song and dance. They are feared and envied at the same time. The music of the second movement represents the mysterious dark forest at night - lower strings create the moss under your feet, higher strings use extended techniques to simulate the noise of branches clicking the wind, a few soloists represent different creatures - both real and imaginary - scurry through the woods above your head. Then you hear the lone song of a Samodiva in the distance, your heart is beating hard, your steps are leading you straight towards the call against your better judgement. It is the ancient story of fear and desire, of self control and complete abandon. You, the listener, become witness to a wild dance, fire in the woods, snakes in their long blond hairs, slender bodies dressed in white clouds dancing to an imaginary beat.  Then it all ends abruptly and you left to wonder: Was it real? Did I see it? Am I safe?The third and final movement of the piece is based on a popular rhythmic folk dance in Bulgaria called Kopanitsa, while the melody creates a fugue between the different voices of the orchestra. The Kids are the little of the mountain goats - free to frolic high above tree line, above any human traces, as close to the clouds as one can get and still be touching the ground below. They are carefree, daring, and somewhat naive, yet safe under the watchful gaze of their parent. The movements ends in cascading repetitions of a musical motif in 5/8 representing the relentless passing of time or at least our perception of it.

The subject is from the Little G minor BWV 578, answered by a different fugue, the Contrapunctus 1 from The Art of Fugue BWV 1080. The entries follow the fugal clock. At one point in the development the first half of the G-minor subject plays with the second half. There's some augmentation and inversion. This is the beautiful and most well-known of the preludes from the Well-Tempered Clavier Book I. The Prelude is not too terribly difficult to play and is as soothing to play as it is to listen to. The Fugue, is rather tricky and required much skill to get all four voices of the Fugue to function separately and as a unit. The prelude was also written down in the 1725 Notebook for Anna Magdalena Bach. This Collection also includes a short essay about The Well-Tempered Clavier and a biography of Johann Sebastian Bach.
