The first out of four movement of the work Liz And The Blue Bird arranged for woodwind ensemble.Liz And The Blue Bird is a four-movement work based on a fictional German fairytale from a movie, both of the same name. Liz is the name of a lonely girl who sells bread at a bakery and socializes with the forest animals. After a big thunderstorm, she finds an unnamed blue-haired girl lying outside. She quickly takes her into her home and, the two become close friends. After a while, Liz started noticing the girl sneaking out at night and coming back before dawn. Liz noticed how the girl would look at the birds freely flying in the sky when they fed the animals. Liz becomes conflicted with her emotions but eventually decides to release her from the cage that is her home. Liz confronts the girl and tells her that she needs to be free and spread her wings. Although distraught by Liz's decision, the girl comes to respect it. It is set to the words of L'Oiseau Bleu, a poem by Mary Elizabeth Coleridge, which depicts a bluebird in flight over a lake. The Blue Bird is the third of Stanford's Eight Part Songs which are all settings of texts by Coleridge. With all the bird titles floating around out there from Birdland, Lullaby of Birdland, Yardbird, Foo Birds, Free Bird, and even The Chicken, I figured what with my being from Broken Arrow (the home of the annual Rooster Days festival), it was high time there was a song involving the rooster. Called Night of the Rooster, this was a cross between the Stray Cat Strut and James Bond, and one can only imagine the rooster's evening in the hen house. Without going into innuendos, the way the T-Town Jazz Band performed it was with all trombone improv solos ending with all four of us playing at once. Whether this was measuring slide lengths or a battle between roosters, you can let your imagination run wild. It boiled down to a fun ltitle blues piece that wasn't too difficult to get into in any case, and we even have the recording linked to prove it.George Willson has been an performer, composer, and conductor for thirty years in various mediums and ensembles.MP3 rendition is an extract of the composition program.

Versatile Brass Old Time CollectionThe song was written about a year after the Royal Air Force and German aircraft had been fighting over southern England, including the white cliffs of Dover, in the Battle of Britain. Nazi Germany had conquered much of Europe and in 1941 was still bombing Britain. With neither America nor the Soviet Union having yet joined the war, Britain was the only major power fighting the Axis powers in Europe (see The Darkest Hour). The American lyricist, Nat Burton, wrote his lyric unaware that the bluebird is not indigenous to Britain and asked Kent to set it to music. Notable phrases include Thumbs Up! which was an RAF and RCAF term for permission to go, and flying in those angry skies where the air war was taking place.The lyrics also looked towards a time when the war would be over and peace would rule over the iconic white cliffs, Britain's symbolic border with the European mainland.The song was made most famous by Vera Lynn and sung to troops during the war. It was a top ten hit in America for Kate Smith in 1942, and Glenn Miller recorded a version in November 1941.Jimmie Baker frequently performed it in Europe during the war, and the song was sung by the vocal group The King's Men on a 3 February 1942 episode of the Fibber McGee and Molly Show. Ray Eberle and Tex Beneke also included it in their repertoire.This is a simple arrangement of the song playable by all levels of ensemble.

The melody originated with Richard Milburn, a Philadelphia African-American who has been described variously as a panhandling busker and as a musically inclined barber. A songwriter and publisher by the name of Septimus Winner heard Milburn's tune, arranged it, added words, put it into print and claimed credit for its creation under the pseudonym Alice Hawthorne. Supposedly, Winner sold the rights to the song for five dollars. Listen to the Mocking Bird grew to be one of the most popular songs of the mid-19th century, a real hit. Its sheet music, by one estimate, sold more than 20 million copies. It was sung and performed particularly often during the Civil War, and troops used its melody as a marching tune. It remains somewhat of a standard and has been recorded numerous times, especially as a favorite of bluegrass musicians. In the lyrics, the singer is remembering his loved one. She has passed away but he recalls their good life together. They particularly enjoyed the call of the mocking bird, which even now is singing o'er her grave. This arrangement opens in E-flat major with Trumpet 1 introducing the sweetly sad melody, I'm dreaming now of Hally. After the introduction, the tempo picks up to allegro and whirls along. It does slow down several times, and there are four one-measure deviations from the 4/4 time signature: one 6/4, two 2/4s and one 1/4. At measure 65, the key changes to B-flat major for the finale. Trumpets 1 and 2 each play one A-above-their-staff eighth note as their highest pitch; the rest of the music stays well within the normal playing range of the five instruments. Along with Korea’s representative folk song “Arirang,†“Bird, Bird, Bluebird†is also music that contains the life and soul of ancestors, and is a valuable cultural heritage of Korea. A quiet and lyrical theme gradually escalates and repeats itself. Subsequently, the theme is played alternately for each part with the tonal change of the circle of perfect fifths descending for each part. At the end of the cadenza, the theme is played with harmonics that give an oriental feel. The bass and treble parts alternately play the main theme, and in the finale, the majestic chords and tense notes create a sense of musical height and end in a passionate atmosphere.
