Published by Ollie Kaiper-Leach (A0.957008). A cappella setting of Edward Thomas' 'The Cherry Trees'. Premiered in Manchester's Cosmo Rodewalt Concert Hall on May 3rd, 2016.The Cherry Trees, setting the words of Edward Thomas, is written to emulate the rural nature of his poetry. The three female voices, overlapping and assisting each other like waves of water, symbolise the faceless persona of nature: perhaps the wind rustling through the tree; perhaps the trees themselves. Much like the text, the music begins sweetly, but with one word the atmosphere is sent in a completely different direction. The second half of the piece sees the voices fittin the shape of wedding bells, almost mockingly, with the alto line bringing imposing strength underneath.

The title was inspired by Cherry Lake, which is a 600 acre lake located in Madison County Florida. It is a beloved lake of Madison County that gives beautiful sights and unique activities for all ages. The name stems from the presence of wild cherry trees near the water's edge, according to Allen Morris' book of place names.It is my hope that Cherry Lake March will provide students with a song that they will enjoy learning to play, and provide other music educators with a teaching tool that can be used to motivate and encourage their students.Cherry Lake March is dedicated to all of my former music students in the Madison County Florida School System, who I had the privilege of teaching from 1974-2016.

Housman’s poem is about the nature of life, here represented by the cherry tree. The poet feels he does not have enough time to appreciate this beautiful world, because, like all living things, he will die. The first stanza is a description of the cherry tree in its spring-time splendor. It is as 'wearing white for Eastertide as if it is celebrating a religious festival. In the second stanza, the mood shifts from the tree to the poet himself, as he thinks about the inevitability of death. He, a twenty-year old, estimates that he has about fifty years left to live. The final stanza expresses the poet's feeling that fifty more years does not give him enough time to enjoy the beauties of nature. He decides that he will look at the cherry tree not only when it is hung with bloom, but also in winter when it is hung with snow. The poet thus celebrates the beauties of nature in all seasons, but also poignantly laments the inevitable passage from youth to old age and death, the seasons of his own life.I composed this setting of Loveliest of Trees to celebrate the 86th birthday of Joyce Hope Suskind, beloved friend, brilliant musician and composer par excellence.

It can be suited ideally in any setting.Program Note“Dreams†is a suite for symphony orchestra in three movements. The work was kindly commissioned by Dr. Luis VÃquez, conductor of the University of Rhode Island’s Symphony Orchestra and to whom this work is being dedicated alongside with his wife Melissa. The titles of the movements come from either an specific dream, or other topics about dreaming that I discovered in the process of writing the work. I. Cherry trees in the morningNature has always inspired me. Every year during spring my family has the tradition to visit the Brooklyn Botanic Garden to experience the cherry blossoms. I usually do not remember many of my dreams but in this particular dream I was in Japan under an esplanade of cherry trees. I remember how amazed I feel and is for sure one of my most memorable dreams. II. DreamcatcherWhile I was writing the initial ideas of for the work I came across a Journal that explored how the use of a particular chord helped reduce nightmares in patients suffering from nightmare disorders. In the study, patients were exposed to the chord C69 (A C Major with the added 6th and 9th) during therapeutic sessions. This chord is used at the beginning of the movement as it moves to explore different sonorities. In this movement you might be able to hear a representation of the “heartbeat†played by the bass drum and timpani, then a more “stressful†section will come to represent a nightmare followed again by another repetition of the C69 chord. If you feel relaxed during the performance, it is on purpose! III. A Dance in the desertDreams, in my case, are usually a mix of different non-related things. For the final movement, I decided to use that idea. I started this dance with a “oriental†style and them throughout the middle of the movement I moved it to a waltz that was influenced by my grandfather. He used to have a small orchestra and he used to play waltzes during events and private parties.I hope the music takes you through a journey of musical emotions.Juan Guerra González

Sequoia for Trombone Octet and Percussion composed in 2009 by Jocelyn Morlock is inspired by the profound beauty and grandeur of these giant trees that tower in the forests of Western Canada. The outer sections of this tripartite work are fierce and majestic, while the middle section is marked by relative quietude and fragility. This work was commissioned by Redshift Music Society with generous support from the British Columbia Arts Council. Instrumentation is for 6 tenor trombones (4 of them B-flat/F), 2 bass trombones, percussion (timpani, glockenspiel and vibraphone performed by one musician). This 10-minute work is appropriate for advanced performers. This recording of Sequoia, with all trombone parts multi-tracked by Neal Bennett, and percussion played by Brian Nesselroad, is available on Bennett’s 2013 recording, Ziggurat, on the Redshift Records label.

Odd-numbered movements focus on atmospheric textures, while even-numbered movements dwell on stars and galaxies. Movement I, Vocalise I, is inspired by street lights casting a copper hue against a dark cobalt sky. Movement II, Choose Something Like a Star, shifts between subdued and bright registers of the voice and piano to illustrate the contrast of the stars in the night sky. Movement III, Intermezzo, drives the listener to a country road on a cloudy night with pine trees on either side while the high beams illuminate the path. Frequent 16th notes in this movement create a motor-like motion. Compound meter with quick 16th notes in Movement IV, Returning, imparts a buoyant character that floats through different galaxies along with frequent use of Lydian and Myxolydian Modes and the Acoustic Scale. Movement V, Vocalise II, paints a picture of a hilly grass field and a parking lot on a cloudy and rainy night, surrounded by lights with a muffled glow.
