Published by Colin Bayliss (A0.938388). This work was written in 1999 for an international competition for quartets reflecting in music the visions in three of Edvard Munch's paintings. It is dedicated to the composer's wife, Rayna. 1. The Scream - Moderato - There are 51 versions of The Scream and the movement is in 51 sections grouped roughly into sonata form. The development is largely textural, and the movement hinges about a chord formed of open fifths a major third apart which will also re-appear in the other movements to give the quartet its sense of unity. The screaming is both audible and silent, and the footsteps on the bridge are portrayed both in a sense of passing by and also of running away. 2. Melancholy - Andante - Munch gave other titles to this painting, namely Jappe by the Shore and Jealousy . As jealousy and melancholy are retrospective emotions, tonal and modal music is employed, using the Norwegian folk song Millom bakkar og berg ut met havet set in a minor key for the first section. The A-B-A form then partially loses tonality for Jealousy, while returning to it for Melancholy itself. 3. The Dance of Life - Allegro - This movement is in rondo form, with hints of Norwegian country dances for the dancers in the painting. The two women are portrayed as one looking nostalgically to the light-heartedness of the old waltz and the other brooding on the darkness and latent sexuality of the new tango, the melodies for both of which are also corruptions of the country dances. The Munch chord alters the perspective on the scene as the movement progresses and eventually dissolves at the end as though the onlooker is passing on to another, equally unresolved future. The 40-page score is a choral symphony with a powerful lesson to modern people, based on an old Danish folk song about the young super-hero Ramund. The score is dense with contents, both musically and lyrically, and alone for that reason, the 8-minute performance takes an advanced choir.The original folk song dates back to the Viking age and consist of many episodes ofRamund's life, almost like a personal saga. Some have undoubtedly been added later,making the total number of stanzas go up around 50, but the main idea of the song isto report about a young lad, whose ideas of what is right for him to do or not doare completely unaffected by other people's opinions, including those of royalties andcelebrities. The stories are in many regards comparable to those of Beowolf.Although the stories generally are dramatic and bloody, Ramund always retains hiscool attitude and shows how unimpressed he is with power demonstrations, even hisown when he is provoked to use his strength. It is a common element throughout thestories that Ramund detests evil and aggression, and he goes to great lengths to fightpower abusers and aggressive elements. He just wants to live in peace and not haveto be bothered by all those who like to abuse power!Included in this presentation for piano and 8 voices are 11 stanzas from what is believedto be original, in English translation, with focus on clarity of meaning, more so thanpoetical rules and rhymes. The first ruling concept has been to obtain clarity and agreat fit to the music. The second concept has been to add the inspiration this old folksong has created in the mind of a modern rebel who would like to see some ofRamund's attitude to power and power abusers put into action in our modern corruptsociety. Maybe in a less bloody version, but definitely with a similar effect! The added2 stanzas and the attached coda, as well as the added lyrics to the intermezzos and theincorporated commentaries to the action should serve that purpose.In addition, the original tune itself, as well as the lyrics and the intermezzo, haveinspired some musical development throughout the piece, to further accentuate themeaning and the messages about respecting each other, standing together againstabuse, and not letting power abusers get away with their crimes.The 8 voices cover ranges as follows: First sopranos: C4 through Bb5 (possibly G5); Second sopranos: C4 through E5; All altos: G3 through D5; All tenors: C3 through G#4(possibly F#4); First basses: F2 through D4; Second basses: D2 through B3

Horn. from Requiem pro Hostiis CorruptelaeThis Requiem's Pater Noster was first composed in 2015 as the Korean translation of the Lord's Prayer - (Joonime Gido ) and recorded ì£¼ë‹˜ì˜ ê¸°ë„ in 2016 by a combination of singers and instrumentalists from Korea, Canada, the U.S., and the Netherlands, performing together over the internet, under the banner name Serra Requiem Internet Ensemble. It was then mixed and released as a digital single online. The current arrangement resets the prayer in Latin and expands the instrumentation to SSAATTBB choir, piano, strings, solo viola and solo French horn. The Korean version was first performed live for a memorial Mass for victims of the 2014 Sewol ferry sinking and their surviving families, in Jeju, S. Korea in 2017, and in 2018 became the seed work for Requiem Missa Hostiis Corruptelae, a mass for victims of corruption in our time. The digital release remains posted online to listen for free at serramusicmusic.bandcamp.com.

Published by Samuel Wellman (A0.882108). This work, written in 1994, was one of my first parodies. Taking another composer's piece and 'messing it up', so to speak, became an important preoccupation for me. Clementi (Op. 36 No. 1) obviously is the victim here, and you can easily follow the original throughout. In the first movement I added a dissonant left hand part, and the result is basically bitonal, with a few quotes added from other famous tunes. In the second movement the material is moved up two octaves to imitate a music box and, just as would happen to a real wind-up music box, the tempo gets slower and slower until......oh no! The final dominant seventh doesn't resolve! Anarchy! Finally, the last movement stays completely faithful to the original, except that every measure is transposed to a different key. It's a great ear-bender, and as Mozart says in the movie Amadeus, It's so new! And the title, 'Snotty Tina,' is a corruption of 'Sonatina.'
