This arrangement of the traditional spiritual When the Saints Go Marching In is presented here as a mixed level duet for two pianos, four hands. The PIANO 1 is the easier part (early-intermediate) and the PIANO 2 is slightly more challenging, though still only at the intermediate level. Both PIANO parts carry the melody at times beginning with PIANO 1 for the verse. Quick-paced and bright, this dual piano duet is an ideal selection for a church setting.The purchase price includes a 5-page score with combined PIANO 1 and PIANO 2 parts on each page (the grand staff) plus an alternate format with the PIANO 1 and PIANO 2 parts on separate pages (3 pages each). Duration is just under 1-1/2 minutes. This arrangement is one of the 5 spirituals in the collection Five Joyful Tunes for Two Pianos.This song has numerous verses and varying lyrics, most of which reference the joy of marching into heaven at Jesus' second coming. Halifax was devastated on 6 December 1917 when two ships collided in the city's harbour, one of them a munitions ship loaded with explosives bound for the battlefields of the First World War. What followed was one of the largest human-made explosions prior to the detonation of the first atomic bombs in 1945.(...)In early December, one of the merchant ships in port was the large, Norwegian vessel Imo, en route from Halifax to New York to pick up relief supplies (...) Another was the French munitions ship Mont-Blanc - filled with tons of benzol, the high explosive picric acid, TNT and gun cotton - arriving in Halifax to join a convoy across the ocean.(...)The Imo was departing the harbour on the morning of 6 December 1917 (...) Imo had an experienced, local harbour pilot on board, William Hayes, who knew the navigation rules of the harbour. However, earlier encounters that morning with two inbound vessels moving towards Bedford Basin - both of which Imo had passed starboard-to-starboard - resulted in the unusual position that Imo now occupied, too far to the east (...) The Mont-Blanc had arrived outside Halifax the previous day and anchored overnight at the mouth of the harbour. On the morning of 6 December, the ship was cleared by harbour authorities to proceed toward Bedford Basin. Despite the Mont-Blanc's dangerous cargo, there was no special protocol for the passage of munitions ships in the harbour. Other ships such as the Imo were not ordered to hold their positions that morning until the Mont-Blanc had made safe passage through the port. Francis Mackey, Mont-Blanc's pilot, was guiding the ship inbound on the Dartmouth-side of the Narrows, when he encountered the Imo heading straight towards him in what he believed was Mont-Blanc's lane. Mackey would later maintain that the Imo was moving at an unsafe speed for such a large, unwieldly ship in the harbour, and also that incoming ships (in this case Mont-Blanc) had the right-of-way over outgoing vessels. Regardless of the accuracy of those claims, what is certain is that the Imo was sailing too far to the east, in what should have been Mont-Blanc's path.After a series of whistles and miscommunications between the officers and pilots on the two ships, and failed manoeuvres to avoid a collision, the Imo struck the starboard bow of the Mont-Blanc. After a few moments the two ships parted, leaving a gash in Mont-Blanc's hull and generating sparks that ignited volatile grains of dry picric acid, stored below its decks. (...) The Mont-Blanc exploded at 9:04:35 a.m., sending out a shock wave in all directions, followed by a tsunami that washed violently over the Halifax and Dartmouth shores. More than 2.5 square km of Richmond were totally levelled, either by the blast, the tsunami, or the structure fires caused when buildings collapsed inward on lanterns, stoves and furnaces.Homes, offices, churches, factories, vessels (including the Mont-Blanc), the railway station and freight yards - and hundreds of people in the immediate area - were obliterated. (...) Across Halifax, there were miraculous stories of survival. And equally, stories of tragedy. Many children were killed on their walk to school that morning, or blinded by flying glass. In addition, New York City had a number of television stations that offered them as well. What all of these films and television programs had in common was, that they always had a strong, catchy and folksy theme. Prime examples were the themes to Bonanza, Wyatt Earp, Wanted Dead or Alive, etc.I wrote The Opening of The West with the goal of having some catchy, folksy and iconic themes that people would remember. I would like to think that this could eventually become an iconic western score.

I feel honored and thankful to have been asked by Greg Hustis and the Music In the Mountains festival in Durango, Colorado to compose a piece honoring local firefighters and first responders following a deadly outbreak of wildfires around that region during the summer of 2018. When I learned about the fires, my heart went out to all the people affected. As the fires closed in from all around, beautiful mountain landscapes were burnt black, homes were threatened, and residents were forced to evacuate; however, the city and peoples’ homes were ultimately kept safe and no one was injured, all because of the fearless efforts of those who laid their lives on the line. My inspiration for the music, as well as the title, came directly from these heroes whose courage and effort proved to shine brighter than the flames. Although this piece was originally commissioned in response to this disaster in 2018, at its heart the piece is a tribute to all the brave heroes out there who fight in countless ways in the midst of disasters every day to keep all of us and our communities safe.

Conceptually it all began a year ago when I came upon a book edited by Jonathan Safran Foer, A Convergence of Birds: Original Fiction and Poetry Inspired by the Work of Joseph Cornell. It is a beautiful book for the mind and the eyes: imaginative short stories and poetry alongside magnificently rendered color-plate reproductions of several Joseph Cornell box constructions. The book led me to a biography by Deborah Solomon, Utopia Parkway, and the germ of a symphonic work for Joseph Cornell was born.Symphony No. 5 ... Utopia Parkway is in five movements.I. Allegro marcato 3708 Utopia Parkway, Flushing, NYII. Lento The Enchanted Wanderer ... for Hedy LaMarr, 1941III. Avian scherzo Habitat Group for a Shooting Gallery, 1943IV. Allegro ... à la Can-can A Pantry Ballet ... for Jacques Offenbach, 1942 V. Moderato Apotheosis: Mary Baker Eddy, Christian ScientistJoseph Cornell lived most of his life with his mother and brother Robert at 3807 Utopia Parkway, Flushing, NY. The first movement, Allegro marcato, is a musical rendition of Joseph’s daily commute into Manhattan where he frequently visited dime stores, junk shops, used book stores, the New City Public Library, art galleries, movie houses and restaurants like Bickford’s and Schraft’s.The Enchanted Wanderer is a collage work on paper by Joseph Cornell – a tribute to Hedy Lamarr. Hollywood fascinated Cornell. He made several box constructions as tributes to movie stars like Lauren Bacall, Jennifer Jones, Greta Garbo, Audrey Hepburn, etc.Avian scherzo. Many of Cornell’s boxes featured cutout pictures of parakeets, parrots and cockatoos. Habitat Group for a Shooting Gallery is an especially evocative box of his aviary series. There are four birds in it, amidst other odds and ends. A number is attached to each one. There is a crack in the glass encasement – as if hit by a bullet. Blood splatters from the head of one of the birds. . In between the shooting gallery music, there is a Trio: a requiem for the dead cockatoo.Allegro ... à la Can-can. Cornell attended the ballet fervently. He made many box constructions inspired by ballet dancers: Fanny Cerrito, Marie Taglioni, Tamara Toumanova, Zizi Jeanmaire, Allegra Kent, etc. A Pantry Ballet for Jacques Offenbach is a very funny box with five red plastic lobsters in tutus. I provided a polka as background music. This movement is dedicated to Allegra Kent – a friend and confidante of Cornell.Joseph Cornell was an active member of the Christian Science Church for all of his adult life. He attended services regularly, and taught Sunday-school classes. For a while he even worked as an attendant in a Christian Science Reading Room in Great Neck, NY. In the Christian Science Hymnal I found several hymns written by the founder, Mary Baker Eddy, set to music by a number of different composers. I wrote a new tune to her hymn, Shepherd, show me how to go. The last movement, Apotheosis, is a theme and variations on this tune. Composed in 2016, Madeleines is similar to my two sets of Spanish Lessons (1988 and 2001) which are both suites of character pieces for piano inspired by my admittedly limited travel in Spain. Madeleines is inspired by a much earlier hairbrained trip I took to France (and the rest of the Grand Tour) with my sister when I was in college. The title refers to Proust's episode of the madeleine, in which involuntary memory overwhelms the protagonist when he bites into one of these small cakes. I also sometimes experience poignant memories from our fondly remembered trip triggered by various catalysts. The five episodes in this set of pieces attempt to capture the essence of some of these memories. The first piece, MeÌmoire triste dans un cafeÌ (sad memory in a cafeÌ), serves the purpose of a preÌlude. One might conclude that the madeleine is sampled in this location. Il pleut aÌ Brest (It is raining in Brest) evokes memories of the wet weather in Brest, a city in Brittany near the coast. I was curious about this area because, during our travels, we met a boy in Paris with dark and dangerous eyes named François (François et ses yeux dangereux) who was from that area. In Il pleut the sound of rain alternates with church bells and fog horns (one of the poetic sensations I remember vividly about Brest). The third piece (François) is a blend of a barcarolle and a funeral march. I continued to send one-way letters to François after we returned and one day the French police called to tell me that he was dead and that they had found one of my letters on his body, which had been tossed into the Seine. They wanted more information, and they revealed that he had been smuggling drugs out of Turkey. I think the next piece, Promenade dans la meÌnagerie de Versailles (Walk in the zoo at Versailles), is tempered by later memories of a trip I took to the zoo at Schönbrunn palace near Vienna, the oldest Baroque zoo, which was in a terrible state of decay when I saw it, hence the wistful air. The finale of the set, Madeleine deÌteste les devoirs (Madeleine hates homework) is a bow to the French primer I grew up with, which had as one of its main characters a little girl who I think may have been named Madeleine. I know her father was named François. My memories are mixed up, the actual François Thibaud is remembered as the inventor of the fast-track method of learning French, which was in vogue when I first studied it in 6th grade. The idea here is that Madeleine, the daughter of François, is having a tantrum and playing with her hoops or a bike rather than doing her English homework.John Carbon

The story behind ‘Roadtrip on a Motorway’ is from a personal experience of travelling to Galway from Dundalk to go to Pink Training, a national and life-changing weekend. The original phrase represents the rising hope of what the weekend could become and how exciting it is to be outside of college. This is quickly interrupted as during the journey the car breaks down on the motorway one hour away from Galway city. This is represented by fast, irregular rhythms with counterpoint to represent the disorientation, panic and fear from not knowing where we are or how we are going to get to Galway on time. The return of the original motif symbolises hope coming back to us as a woman stopped on the motorway and offered to drive us to Galway. A sense of panic and disorientation returns in the music as we begin to become stressed about whether we will meet the deadline for registration. The song finally resolves to the original theme, but developed as a nod to the journey that we had while we finally make it to registration on time.
