Jacques Cousteau, Father of the Aqualung, wrote: The sea, once it casts its spell, holds one in its net of wonder for ever.This piece, for virtuoso double bass, imagines a scuba-diver encountering large animals, and consists of a suite of short depictions of animals in the form of variations on a melody plus a recurrent new melody representing the diver's smooth movements and bubbles. The variations are: Lobster Jazz Waltz, Sea-anemone Belly-dance, Tuna Tune, Luminous Light Show, Dolphin Fling, Jaws Serial and Blues Whale Pavane.The piece lasts about eight minutes with repeats.TECHNICAL NOTE The C harmonics will be a pip flat--they are only bursting bubbles anyway!Scuba Fins tries to feel the quiet calmness and agelessness of the underwater world, using the ancient and universal major pentatonic scale C,D,E, G,A ,C. The rhythm is mostly steady and simple, but triplets indicate the occasional extra effort. Now and again, he glances down at the infinite depths. Tintinnabulation and soft staccatissimo arpeggios represent the bubbles. Lobster Waltz is a jazz waltz with many staccato notes and leaps representing the many appendages and the tangle of lively giant crustaceans.Sea-anemone Belly-Dance pictures the soft body and tentacles swaying under the waves, using the Arabic scale Shad 'Araban, roughly G,Ab, B,C,D,Eb,F#,G and influenced by a dance to the folk tune known as Bint El-Salabiya.Tuna Tune is a quick moto perpetuo in the cheerful major mode, septuple time, the rapid rise and fall of the phrases and of volume reflecting the powerful shoal's unpredictable, ceaseless movements, approaching and retreating.Dolphin Fling is a stathspey, or highland fling, using the major mode and typical dance rhythms including the Scotch snap to depict the weighty but intelligent dolphins enjoying their leisure time and perhaps dancing with the diver.Jaws Serial reminds us of the fear a shark generates, using the dissonant 12-note serial mode and unpredictable leaps and pauses. The opening slow trill will chill you as it invokes the Jaws film theme by John Williams. You might even hear the diver's heart sink and the snap pizzicato of the teeth snapping. The prime row is the nearest possible to the original theme: Bb, Ab, F, Eb, B, C, E, G, Db, D, Gb.A, but I have followed the contours of the main themes. Blues Whale is a pavane, a slow, stately processional incorporating the typical renaissance drum rhythm. and using a blues scale, G, A, Bb, C, C#, D, F, G, and an implied 12-bar minor blues harmony.

Sacrum Creaturae (2019) (score and parts) for string quartet and digital acoustic commissioned and premiered August 18th, 2021 at the Stringwood Chamber Music Festival by the Artaria String Quartet, profiles three endangered creatures: wolves, dolphins, and birds in the three movements of this string quartet. Each of the digital acoustics, the recorded and processed sounds of wolves, dolphins, and birds, explore the sounds of these creatures from three perspectives. Canis Lupus-Nocturne developed through the exploration of wolf howls, growls, snarls, barks, and choruses. My goal in integrating the sounds of wolves with the string quartet was to make them equally passionate and expressive driving the dynamic and emotional climaxes of the music with equal intensity. Programatically, I have placed the wolves deep in the forest, in an environment that allows the string quartet to evoke the mystery and primal energy associated with these animals. I make musical references to the controversy of re-introducing these animals in the wild and the history of violent annihilation by hunters. Delphinus-Cradlesong comprises the slow, middle movement of this piece. The cradlesong is literal and is inspired by the recent discovery by marine scientists that a mother dolphin will sing to its unborn calf so that it bonds with the mother and is familiar with her voice after birth. I have essentially orchestrated my Cradlesong for solo piano for string quartet and the whistling sounds of a mother dolphin singing to its calf. The final movement, 21 Birds, incorporates the bird calls of 21 birds in the Driftless region of the upper Mississippi, integrated with the thematic music of the string quartet. I treat the birds as 21 soloists and as an orchestra of birds accompanying the quartet. In the performance with the quartet, I have employed various special effects, such as reverberation, echo, and delay to blend the two acoustics. In particular, scientists are concerned that the tests may cause animals who orient themselves via sound waves, such as dolphins and whales, to become permanently deaf. The music is intended to evoke impressions of a life in water, beginning with non-verbal communication between fish in streams. Images, sensations and sounds of water are expressed throughout the piece as salmon make their way from streams to rivers to the ocean. Eventually, we hear a sense of quiet communion in the ocean, which is interrupted by three explosions. The water creatures respond with panic, followed by silence. The final measures are intended to express grieving.

The piece was inspired by news that the US may be planning to perform missile tests in the Pacific Ocean near the Hawaiian island of Kauai. Scientists are concerned that the tests may cause marine animals who orient themselves via sound waves, such as dolphins and whales, to become permanently deaf.The music is intended to evoke impressions of a life in water, beginning with non-verbal communication between fish in streams. Images, sensations and sounds of water are expressed throughout the piece as salmon make their way from streams to rivers to the ocean. Eventually, we hear a sense of quiet communion in the ocean, which is interrupted by three explosions. The marine animals respond with panic, followed by silence. The final measures are intended to express grieving.

Delphinus, a Late Intermediate Piano Solo features playful staccato accompaniment in the right hand with cantabile melody in the left, and a contrasting contrapuntal section to tell the story. In ancient Greece a musician and poet called Arion was returning on a sea journey from a performance tour. The sailors threatened to rob Arion of his earnings and murder him. He made a request to play his lyre and sing one last song. His music attracted a pod of dolphins, who swam alongside the ship, leaping and smiling. Seizing his chance for escape, he leapt from the ship onto the back of a dolphin who carried him to safety. Therefore the dolphin was honoured and placed in the sky near the constellation Lyra. Delphinus the Dolphin is easy to see near the summer triangle as a small diamond shape with a tail. From “88 Constellations†a collection by Heather Cattanach featuring one piece of piano music for each of the 88 constellations (to match the number of keys on a standard piano). Hector's Dolphin is endangered due to becoming entangled in gill-nets and drowning. There are approximately 7,000 Hector's Dolphins remaining of a population of almost 30,000 in the 1970's.
