Francis Ball Is a composer, violinist, and guitarist who has performed in multiple bands, in collaborations, in orchestras, and solo projects. He has recorded and released ten studio albums with The Unwieldies and The Psyatics. His classical, jazz, romantic, and punk musical influences can be heard in all his contemporary compositions. J. Francis Ball was born and raised in Pittsburgh, PA, and currently lives and performs in Las Vegas. His Words This collaboration began with a powerful name. I asked Mercedes to listen to and name an early piano composition I wrote. Her reply was “Beyond Her Only Dreaming.” The original composition was ultimately scrapped, but the name stuck with me. It inspired the muses whispering in my haunted ear. I wrote five musical tone poems that were loosely based on a woman’s dream. During the creative process, I asked Mercedes to listen to the tones and use her imagination to create sketches for each section. Her spoken poetry powerfully frames a woman’s dreams, fears, desires, and hope for love. They blend seamlessly with the music and are so masterfully written that they create a picture frame to use as structure but leave the canvas blank. This allows the listener to also take part in this collaboration and paint their own visions of how they experience the music. J.F.B.Her Words I’m a dreamer and writer of words, but I love music. When John asked me to name his original musical piece, I was delighted. I had recently written a story based on Robert Chamber’s famed The King in Yellow collection and, due to the sound and feel of John’s piece, loosely named the composition after my short story. John took this title and created a brilliant new musical composition. After listening to it, I was influenced to create spoken- word pieces that match the emotion of the music while also hearkening back to the original short story. The piece you’ll hear contains poetry influenced by original music inspired by a short story based on a collection written in 1895. Time is a flat circle. They still worked together - and built this song in a tiny warehouse using whatever technology they could get their hands on. In a day where most music was produced in the large studios backed by industry money - they pioneered a hit without the big studio. Securing a loan, they procured essential equipment—a compact setup comprising an 8-track tape recorder, mixer, effects processors, synthesizers, a drum computer, and a compact dynamic microphone. Some of the emotions from their lives went into the song - a fresh start on the heels of emotional events. Reflecting on that period, Lennox candidly remarked, “I was feeling very vulnerable. The song was an expression of how I felt: hopeless and nihilistic.â€This version is not a cover. Fragments of musical elements are translated into the ensemble. While occasionally exhibiting moments of dance, the composition evolves into a more profound expression, capitalizing on the musical possibilities of a percussion ensemble. Published by POLYHYMNIA Ediciones musicales (A0.1029293). Perfil del ánima (Profile of the anima), Op. 86 is a solo cello piece written in a single movement. It is part of the series of PROFILES that I am composing since 2002 for solo instruments. The anima is a concept expounded by C.G. Jung in his book The Man and his Symbols. It is a personification of all female psychological tendencies in the psyche of a man, such as vague feelings and moods, prophetic forebodings, receptivity to the irrational, personal capacity for love, love of nature and, very importantly, his relationship with the unconscious. It is best perceived in dreams. If the dreamer is a man, he will discover a female personification of his unconscious. If it is a woman, it will be a male figure. Jung named them respectively anima and animus. My work has some quotes that evoke the anima, as a fragment of the 2nd movement of Mahler's 5th Symphony, which he wrote under the fascination of Alma Schindler, his future wife. Another citation is a motif of Dvořák’s opera Rusalka, an elf from Slavic mythology, which usually lives in a lake or river. Rusalka is an ancient fairy-tale figure, already appearing in literature in 1387. Her longing is to become a human being and to love as an earthly woman, even at the price of suffering and death. My piece evokes this inner and unconscious dialogue between the masculine and feminine in all of us, represented by the cello’s low and high registers. The use of many and varied instrumental resources (chords, microtones, harmonics, timbral variations, complex rhythms, tremolos, glissandi, pizzicati, etc.), together with its broadness and thematic complexity, make Profile of the anima a demanding work for the soloist. I finished its composition on December 21th, 2016. It is dedicated to Rafał Jezierski, who performed its world premiere on February 14th, 2017, in the Auditorium of the Museum of Fine Arts of Valencia, within the cycle of concerts organized by the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Carlos.

A young girl, so naive and innocent, who believes that she can live a good life by making the lives of others better. But as the song cycle continues we see that for some women, their dreams will never become a reality. We see hints of this in this piece, as in the second section, the piece dips into a minor key. Suggesting that the woman girl has started to give up on her dreams. But the girl keeps singing, saying that she’ll help a fainting robin. She has not given up yet, and will not let her dreams fade.

When not on the piano bench, Ms. DiPaolo continues to compose and arrange, and her compositions have been described as very effective with a fantastic amount of intrigue, mindfulness...[and] colorful nuance (Seven Sky Music). Ms. DiPaolo's music has been heard across the world. Along with numerous performances in the Midwest, her commissioned song settings of Muscogee poet laureate Alexander Posey's texts have been performed nationwide, and the Smithsonian Institution procured copies of two of these (Nature's Blessings and A Vision) to archive at the National Museum of the American Indian. At these times, it is important to reflect on one’s options and take the best road for him or her, without looking back. We can fondly hold our past dear to our hearts, but we cannot live in the past. We must take a leap of faith and move forward toward realizing our dreams. LÃmites (1979) for mezzo-soprano and Chamber Orchestra Borges’ poem greatly impressed me with its dreamlike images and its rich reflections on the limitations that we face in our lives. The poem mirrors Borges’ own acceptance of his impending blindness. I sought to capture musically the vivid revelations found in each of the stanzas of the poem. The music centers around the note A 440 which tries dramatically to rise to B-flat but is unsuccessful until the very end of the work, underscoring the lines space, time, and Borges now are leaving me.
