This volume also contains an indexed glossary of all the terms and symbols used in the other 8 volumes of Collections for Violin. All the Collections can be played with viola players and cellists and some with Double Bass players. This makes for sociable learning. The download format is easy to read with larger print than many other books for beginners. The volumes can also be bought together as a whole (66 pages) or in two parts. In the beginning, the violin books concentrate more on the lower strings to enable compatibility across the instruments and it can sound less shrill to the worried parent! Number 8 in Book I of Debussy's two books of Preludes, the piece is an example of Debussy's experimentation with new scales, especially the pentatonic scale in this instance. The work, in Gb major, is performed almost entirely on the black keys of the piano. In the key of C the notes of the major pentatonic are: C D E G A. If you start on C and go up in perfect 5ths, you will get all the notes of the major pentatonic. The relative minor scale in A minor is A C D E G. If you start on E and go up in perfect 4ths, you will get the minor pentatonic in A.This book is a series of four and six note groups that are developed into chromatic and diatonic lines. The concept of note groups was presented to me by the great pianist Hal Galper at the Jamey Aebersold clinic in 1980. I was young at the time but was hip to pentatonics so his ideas stayed with me and I’ve expanded on them in my own fashion. This is achieved by introducing the bassist to 3rd position when the other instruments learn C# and D on the A string. I do advocate marking 3rd position on the fingerboard. Another benefit is that the bassist is able to develop good tone production and intonation more easily on the higher 2 strings.
