The Haunted Ballroom is a one-act ballet, in three scenes and an interlude, with music and libretto by Geoffrey Toye (former musical director for the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company) and choreography by Ninette de Valois. It was first produced in London in 1934, and was revived several times, but much of the choreography is now lost. The ballet is a Gothic melodrama about a fatal family curse, involving dancing with ghostly partners. The original cast included Robert Helpmann (The Child Catcher from 'Chitty Chitty Bang Bang') and a young Margot Fonteyn. This arrangement for modern concert band of the main theme from the ballet has been prepared from the piano transcription by Reginald King. A charming slice of British light music for a more gentle addition to a Hallowe'en concert.

You walk into the darkened room, already anxious in the silence. In the corner, there is a small, wooden cupboard. Creaking in the shadows. Suddenly, the door swings open! And, a mouse crawls out. Hopefully, that is all that was in the cupboard. The completion of this piece has been a long time coming. Initially started as an excuse to use strange percussion instruments and tense chords swells, Haunted Cupboards has evolved into a cheeky polka dance about ghosts. Further, the subtitle notes it as an essay in Harmonic Septphrygian which is a new scale of my own creation. It is simply built by lowering the 2nd and raising the 7th scale degrees, then removing the 5th.Includes a legal-sized score and a letter-sized set of parts.

The inspiration for the work came from a reoccurring dream (or nightmare) I would have about being lost in a large, haunted mansion. The mansion would be abandoned, yet would be full of unexpected noises and surprises around every corner. Because of this, the music is intended to sound a little haunting, yet adventurous at the same time, because both of these emotions were strong in the dreams. I no longer have this reoccurring dream, and I have never come to understand why I used to have this dream. I have been a student of the guitar for over 18 years, and I wanted to write a concerto-like work for the nylon string guitar and orchestra. Because an orchestra can be overpowering to the acoustic guitar, I have suggested that the guitarist use an acoustic guitar amplifier. The volume can be adjusted to the performers discretion, but the guitar needs to always be heard. Although the work is also technically challenging, I tried to write something that would still be accessible for the audience. Almost all of the thematic material comes from a simple 5-note motive that can be heard at the beginning of the piece in the piano and guitar. This work does not follow a specific form, although many of the sections do repeat. Originally for guitar and orchestra, this arrangement is for guitar and piano.Difficulty: grade 5Duration: 7:45

McCabe #743479. Published by Blake P. McCabe (A0.1143117). This composition is an arrangement of Scriabin’s Piano Sonata No. 9 Op 68. This piece has traditionally been nicknamed The Black Mass and was written for piano. Scriabin himself accepted this nickname for the piece and earlier on wrote a piece that would be nicknamed The White Mass. The Black mass was completed in 1913, a mere 2 years before his untimely death. The piece is built upon his ‘mystic chord, a hexachord built on fourths. Scriabin described this chord of embodying the divine and having a smoky tonal color, stemming from his own perception of sound as color. This piece moves from haunting sounds in its first motif to a chilling climax, returning to a mysterious murmur, and moves through multiple tempos to drag the listener along its march through its gothic vision, until finally returning to its first motif and leaving the listener haunted by the dark, colorful visions it invokes. To date of publication of this arrangement, I have yet to find an arrangement of The Black Mass for orchestra, band, nor symphony. The piece has many layers within it and includes complex polyrhythms typical of his music. The dark uncurrent, along with the form and choice of lack of direct key signature pose a unique challenge in the arrangement of this piece. I have deigned to maintain the feel of the original piano version, including his choice of time signatures and rhythmic choices while bringing it to life through the sounds of a modified symphony orchestra. This arrangement relies on the timbres of the instrument families to portray the emotional colors of the piece and particularly highlights the woodwind section of the symphony orchestra, along with the angelic sounds of the harp. Percussion is added through timpani, xylophone, glockenspiel, and multi-percussion to heighten the emotional experience of the arrangement.

Many years ago I was on a judging panel to select winning song entries to mark the United Nations World Peace Celebration. I remember being quite disappointed in the majority of entries because the lyrics proceeded to list all the current world conflicts and their proposed solutions. It made for overly long, and ultimately boring, songs. I was haunted by those entries when I went home that night. I lied in bed and thought all I wanted to hear was.... Finally, at a sleepless 2 a.m., I got up and went to the piano and wrote this piece as a response to that. (That line from my tortured dream; all I ever wanted even made it into the song.). I set it for TTBB voices to provide a closer, tighter harmony to indicate the brotherhood I was dreaming of. Its simplicity and extreme brevity are no doubt knee jerk reactions to the long, boring pieces I heard all day. This piece has been in my drawer for two decades because I thought it was too brief to be of any practical value for anyone, but all attempts I made to lengthen it seemed to spoil it. But it remains one of my favorite and most passionate pieces that I have written, so I have decided to post it 'as is' and let you creative types decide how to use it. Enjoy!. For James: a kind of lullaby (1993)Built in 1898 the James Monaghan Mansion--now, and since 1942 the home of Gonzaga University's music department--was for many years believed to be haunted. In addition to reports of disembodied footsteps, doors dramatically opening themselves, and sudden appearances of hostile presences, there was also reports of the organ playing itself......which is where I, primarily an organ student at the time, spent a majority of my time. This piece was written entirely at the organ, on that organ while an organ and piano student at Gonzaga. Written in four layers as if for organ, in the end I found that it sounded much better on the piano. It has never been performed or recorded on organ.The working title was Excorsising Monaghan. Â The finished piece sounded less ghostly and more like a lullaby. Whether or not it was James doing the haunting, I thought it best to offer the lullaby to him.--Bill Whitley, 2023.

This famous song by the master songsmith, Schubert, tells of young lad being carried home by his father, but all the while, being haunted by the goblin king, (Der Erlkonig). When the father returns home, the boy is dead in his arms. In the song, the singer plays the part of the boy, the father, the Erlking and the narrator, which makes it a challenge for the singer. Here it has been arranged as a violin trio, where all the parts have an equal importance.

Danny Elfman’s classic song “This Is Halloween†from Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas has been skillfully adapted for standard-sized orchestra with harp. This instrumental arrangement retains the “haunting†mood and colorful orchestration of the original, but makes it easily performed by any group with standard instrumentation. The harp and pitched percussion parts may be performed on electronic keyboards. Danny Elfman composed the music to Tim Burton’s 1993 classic stop-motion animated feature The Nightmare Before Christmas. Although Walt Disney Pictures feared the film might be too scary for children, it is now considered a timeless classic that has been re-released numerous times, and has been featured in the annual holiday-season version of Disney’s Haunted Mansion since 2001.
