My dear friend, and Pastor Don Colageo and I cut our teeth together with this piece when we decided to dive headlong into this cycle of Seven Anthems to Christ. It was the second song of the (SEVEN ANTHEMS TO CHRIST) cycle that I had composed, but the first using his Greek translation(s). It eventually would become the last piece to grace the cycle of seven in order of my musical presentation sequence. In fact, this known 1st century Hymn to Christ spans 18 verses of the first chapter of the Gospel of John. My setting of the anthem is seven plus minutes long in performance length. The song's length was not on purpose, but the number seven does have Biblical significance (seven days of creation, seven golden lamp stands, etc.) The number seven is also known among Biblical scholars as the number of Holiness and Perfect Creation. Since this rather long, yet theologically complete Hymn to Christ already existed in the 1st century, it is no wonder the Apostle John opted to begin his Gospel with it, probably quoting the entire text. Consequently, he converted this particular Hymn to Christ’s lyrics into what would later become canonized Scripture. The anthem is composed for SSATB with solo SSA trio, and Solo Soprano and Solo Baritone lines, accompanied by Flute and B♠Clarinet. The key signature of the anthem is B♠Major. However, a lot of time is spent weaving and bobbing around the Dominant chord, (F Major). The Flute and Clarinet introduction play seven different motifs, interweaving with counterpoint, musically connoting the dual natures of Christ--fully God, and fully man. An SSA trio opens the piece recounting the creation story. A bass solo shortly follows, introducing John the baptizer's story and purpose. Soon, the anthem breaks out into full SSATB illustrating Christ's life and purpose for our salvation. The final coda is the great Doxology, sung in 5 parts, accompanied by the Flute and Clarinet, and the entire congregation (or audience) is invited to sing along with the familiar tune.

Very well, then, he said, I shall sing that first line twice, and perhaps if I sing it very quickly, I shall find myself singing the third and fourth lines before I have time to think of them, and that will be a Good Song. Now then:Sing Ho! for the life of a Bear! Sing Ho! for the life of a Bear! I don't much mind if it rains or snows, 'Cos I've got a lot of honey on my nice new nose! I don't much care if it snows or thaws, 'Cos I've got a lot of honey on my nice clean paws! Sing Ho! for a Bear! Sing Ho! for a Pooh! And I'll have a little something in an hour or two! He was so pleased with this song that he sang it all the way to the top of the Forest, and if I go on singing it much longer, he thought, it will be time for the little something, and then the last line won't be true. With a little bit of creativity, and a lot of knowledge and understanding about how the instrument works - and how students learn - I have created this book. I hope you will love it just as much as I do, and that it will help you build a good foundation for your cello playing. FROM THE INTRODUCTION: This lesson book was created with a new perspective in mind. My hope is, that this way of learning, will make it easier to learn to play the cello. I have chosen to include a few chapters in the beginning of the book, where you will play on open strings. That will help you establish a good, basic understanding for how the cello should sound. It will also give you the opportunity to build up strength in the left hand slowly – and concentrate on getting a good, basic bowing technique. I have included small chapters with music theory, that I find important in order to understand how the instrument works. The cello doesn't have any keys or frets to help you play in tune, so knowing a few tips and tricks will help you tremendously. As opposed to most cello lesson books, the first finger you will learn to use here is the 4th finger. The 4th finger is your little finger and usually the least strong finger of them all. Starting with 4th finger has 2 very important advantages: • When you use the 4th finger – especially in the beginning – you will use the other 3 fingers to help push the string down into the fingerboard. That will help you establish a good, healthy hand position for the left hand. And when you start with 4th finger, using the other 3 fingers will feel so easy! • 4th finger in the first position is the same note (an octave higher) as the open string below. It gives you the opportunity to use the open string to know if you play in tune. Once you have gone through this book you should be able to play with the bow, by plucking the strings (pizzicato) and use 1st, 3rd and 4th finger on the left hand. That means that you should be able to play songs in G Major and D Major in one octave. The last few chapters include duets for two cellos. I have chosen to include the duets to make it more fun to play and to start developing the students ability play chamber music. It is wonderful to be able to play an instrument, and playing with other people adds an extra dimension to that. Love, live, play! Julie.

It is based loosely on a ternary structure (ABA) – the A section depicts the moment of farewell. One can hear the violin plays a very simple, bell-like melody, representing the bell-strikes which signify that it is the end of a long journey – time to say goodbye. The B section, based on the very same melody, transforms itself into a 6/8 dance. This dance depicts the pang and melancholia as we bid farewell, leading to a passionate climax. The A section then returns with the melody in its original form, announced by the horn. The coda concludes the piece, trying to move away from the tonic, representing the start of a new chapter in our journey and our optimistic feelings about it. Throughout the piece there are also quotes from the famous Westminster chimes, and variants of it, enforcing the bell imagery.

The goal of Dots and Beams is to break music down into its elements and provide reading material focused on systematically developing each element in isolation. These books can be used in any number of ways and are an invaluable tool for creative musicians who enjoy inventing new exercises. In addition, these books make excellent, thoughtfully graduated sight-reading material for a wide range of ability levels from student to professional. This collection presents its user with a series of notes on a treble staff in the context of increasingly complex rhythmic material. The pitch material in this book is entirely diatonic with a space left at the beginning of each system in which one can write a key signature. Early chapters use only notes on the staff while subsequent chapters begin to add notes on ledger lines above and below the staff. Each chapter contains two exercises in each of the following time signatures: 2/4, 3/4, 4/4, 6/8, 9/8, and 12/8. This gives exercises in 2, 3, and 4 beats per bar in both simple and compound meters. From chapter to chapter the conceptual difficulty of the rhythmic material increases. The exercises in this collection are intentionally aimless, wandering, and difficult to internalize. They resemble standard melodies on the surface but don’t emphasize any particular tonal centre or harmonic movement. They are designed this way for several reasons. In keeping the melodic material as non-specific as possible the door is left open for the materials to be used in conjunction with any number of exercises, something that would be much more difficult with a composition that dictates the harmonic, melodic, and rhythmic phrasing. It also allows the user to read the exercises in any key signature, making this a great tool to help students learn to think in different keys. The unpredictability of these exercises also forces the user to process every note and rhythm as its own event without relying on pattern recognition or melodic and harmonic tendencies to help in figuring out the notes and rhythms. While I absolutely agree that the skill of predicting music’s direction from harmonic and melodic cues is an essential skill for any musician to develop, I think we will all agree that resources for this type of reading practice are already abundant. This collection, on the other hand, is designed to develop the user’s ability to process raw musical data. Once this skill is strengthened and internalized it is my belief that the act of reading more predictable and typically melodic music will be made much easier as the processing of notes and rhythms will be second nature, allowing the musician to focus on musicality. This book is a supplement to practising sight-reading using real music, not a replacement; I encourage you to use both. If this material is being used to practice sight-reading, it is encouraged to cycle through the exercises quickly rather than dwelling on a particular exercise for a long period of time. The goal in practising sight-reading is not to learn the material but to develop the skill of reading new material. Some suggestions for how to use this book include: Read each exercise in all 15 key signatures from 7 flats to 7 sharps. Practice key changes by writing in a different key signature for each system. Increase the challenge of the previous exercise by using a metronome on weak beats. For example, instead of putting the metronome click on each quarter-note in 4/4, play the exercise with the metronome giving the second eighth note of each beat, or the last sixteenth note, or beats 2 and 4. In 1 John, we witness the Apostle (that Jesus loved) writing as the elder statesman of the faith in the last third of the 1st century. In chapter two, verse seven, John refers to the church as beloved and proceeds by telling them of a new commandment. He says (verses 9-11), Whoever loves his brother, abides in the light and there is no cause for stumbling. But whoever hates his brother is in the darkness, and does not know where he is going, because the darkness has blinded his eyes. From this text, John immediately segues into verses 12-14, to affirm for his followers that as far as they are concerned, there is no darkness in them for they are the children of the Light to whom he was earlier referring. John achieves this transition by employing yet another 1st century Hymn to Christ, which I have entitled, Through His Name. This anthem is an affirmation of the faith, first to the little children, then to the fathers, and then to the young men. What is very interesting is that the first stanza is written in the present tense (I am writing to you) but the second stanza, with very similar wording, is written in the past tense (I have written to you). It’s as if to say, you heard the Gospel message before, and you believed, and I am writing it to you again, so that you may continue to believe.

This musical piece is comprised of two twelve-tone rows, atonal music based on synthetic scales unique to each composition, which are based on medieval plainsong chants whose systemization was begun by Pope Gregory I during the sixth century AD. A simple explanation of this composition is that it is the world's oldest notated music combined with modern 20th-century music theory that eschews traditional melody and harmony for synthetic scales unique to each composition. The music is complex and dissonant, although the conversion of the two plainsong chants to twelve-tone rows retains a semblance of a tonal center at given points throughout. Still, the entire piece of music is that same melody utilized harmonically: just forward, backward, upside-down, backward and upside-down, rhythmically altered, transposed, displaced up or down, or split into smaller cells and then reprocessed in the same way mentioned above. I have also borrowed the Baroque Period techniques of the two-part invention and four-voice fugue combined with serial musical techniques that may offend the average listener's traditional musical sensibilities but make logical structural sense. I used the Dies Irae (The Day of Wrath) and Tuba Mirum (The Last Trumpet Call). The authorship of the chants has been attributed to many saints from Gregory to Thomas of Celano but probably evolved from early Jewish psalmody carried forward by the earliest Jewish converts to Christianity, which further developed into trochaic metered poetry by successive monks. It was set to memorized plainsong heralding back, in part, to Jewish worship. The text of the Dies Irae is very similar to Zephaniah 1:16​. The last trumpet call that raises the dead in Christ is comparable to the Apostle Paul's account written in his first epistle to the Corinthians Chapter 15 and first epistle to the Thessalonians Chapter 4. The two epistles may, or may not, be related to the Final of the Seven Trumpets bringing God's Judgement on the earth spoken of in Revelation 11. The relationship of the trumpet mentioned in the epistles to those written about in Revelation divides theologians, but I digress into unrelated matters. Despite the modern theory, the music is still movingly visceral because of its conceptually descriptive nature. It is full of aural symbolism following the Dies Irae and the Tuba Mirum, making it a type of program music ala Hector Berlioz of the Romantic Period. The music is, therefore, genuinely eclectic because it has blended qualities of several musical periods. The final section of the video explains the symbolism. The music difficulty is virtuosic, extremely taxing to play.

Published by Roba Music Verlag (RX.9783737803298). This song is a travelling song written under the impression of several tours through South and East Europe, the Balkans and around the Black Sea. Dedicated to Jason, the hero of the Greek mythology, it has to be played in a hymnic manner. Jason went on a most adventurous journey to the very outermost coast of the Black Sea with this motley entourage - the Argonauts - in order to seize the Golden Fleece, a gigantic golden ram skin. Just about where the Georgian city of Batumi is today. If you would like to know more about it, you may want to read the chapter “Die Reise nach Batumi†(The Journey to Batumi) in our roadbook “Quadro Nuevo: Grand Voyage. To every person who is interested in these old myths, I recommend the books of the author and journalist Michael Kohlmeier, for example his amusing interpretations of the Sagen des Klassischen Altertums (Sagas of the classical antiquity). Just East of Batumi the Caucasus begins, with its colourful mixture of ancient peoples and cultures. I have always been fascinated with musicians who originate from this region. For example the composer Aram Katschaturian or the pianist David Gazarov, with whom I often play concerts. An Eastern groove suits this song well, quite comparable to a fast rumba. I suggest you play the intro (may be extended) and the theme (measures 6 to 39) first. Then you may improvise freely over the AABA-form of the theme. The last solo part is shortened because the B-part leads into a percussion solo. This percussion solo may be omited. After the last complete solo part you can repeat the theme and then play the al fine. For Improvisation: On a separate sheet I am offering some scales to the chords of the song in various transpositions, which is helpful as basic material for improvisations. Some chords (like the very first one) fit several different scales. Decide for yourself which one you prefer. Or maybe even make up your own. Even though these notes may sound right with the chords, one thing always holds true in creative music: There should be no dogmatic wrong or right. Sometimes what seems like a wrong note, could give the progression of the melody its special colour, tension and spice. Sometimes an improvisation with exclusive right notes is correct in music theory, but sounds terribly boring. Besides, every improviser is encouraged to happily help themselves to the chromatics. All of this is only a suggestion. Music becomes exciting and colourful when the basic material is interpreted in an imaginative and creative way!

As practical musician and composer he was cellist and it is known that he played his own compositions at the Concert Spirituel in Paris, but neither his performances nor his compositions met with outstanding success.As theorist Blainville claimed the discovery of a third mode (mode mixte) between major and minor, unfortunately his harmonic theories did not have the expected success.As historian and encyclopedist we found his work Historie générale et philologique de la musique, published in Paris in 1767. The work is in consonance with other contemporaries works such as Rousseau’s Dictonaire de Musique (1768) or the Essai sur la musique ancienne et moderne, published around 1780 by M. de Laborde and Pierre Joseph Roussier. As in these works, the work of Blainville broadly covers the musical knowledge, including theoretical-musical, stylistic, historical and ethnographic aspects. Framed in this last aspect we find a chapterdedicated to the music of the Turks. And it is in this chapter we find the musical pieces used in this arrangement.

It’s also a love song; One of the things I like the most is the balance between contemplation and passion that Rachmaninov accomplishes. The poem, by the Countess Glafira Adolfovna Einerling, a contemporary writer of the composer who wrote under the pseudonym of Galina, simply describes a sunset. I don't know if the landscape portrayed is similar to what Rachmaninov could see from his home but no doubt he felt it part of his own; he even changed the beginning of the poem so he said that the nice place was here. Zdes' khorosho is a song full of lyricism, seemingly simple but demanding for the singer (please pay attention to the pianissimo at the last verse, which seems to arise from nowhere), with an exquisite accompaniment. Some scholars think that the true essence of Rachmaninov is found in songs like that, rather than in his athletic piano concerts.Songs of Comfort and Hope is inspired by the series of recorded-at-home musical offerings that Ma began sharing in the first days of the COVID-19 lockdown in the United States. Over the course of the last year, Yo-Yo Ma’s #SongsofComfort grew from a self-shot video of AntonÃn Dvořák’s Goin’ Home into a worldwide effort that has reached more than 20 million people. Ma and Stott marked the next chapter in the project with this album, offering consolation and connection in the face of fear and isolation. A fanfare for a graduation ceremony is unusual in celebrating the whole assembled company: students, their supporting families, distinguished guests and the staff. Wishing to make the piece relevant to York St John's University, I considered its religious foundation and dedication to St John, the apostle. I was delighted to find reference to a Missa Brevis by Robert Hugill, which has never been performed and may never have been published: this includes an Agnus Dei. The composer very generously sent me a copy, and I have inserted a well-disguised quotation from it. Agnus Dei, Lamb of God, is taken from the Gospel of St John, Chapter 1 Verse 29. My central section is a slow peacock processional pavane, as I anticipate the parade of begowned personages. I wanted to avoid unnecessary dissonance and confusion to be created by York Minster's echo. I hoped the echo would enrich the texture rather than muddy it, therefore, I used a scale without semitones--the whole-tone scale, and the lack of rapid passage-work will also help in this acoustic. I love the antiphonal works of, for instance, Giovanni Gabrieli, which were intended for cathedrals, and Decani-Cantoris antiphony appears in, for example, Orlando Gibbons' O Clap Your Hands, which can be found in the 17th century Bing-Gostling part-books at York Minster. The Graduation Fanfare lasts about 1 minute 50 seconds.
